Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Wow that is amazing.

What is, @burghdad ?

@LMHS73 wow that is awesome gongratulations on the wash u situation

Congrats @LMHS73 Outstanding news.

Fantastic news @LMHS73! Best of luck to her!

Sorry to hear your news @gclsports. I’d likely say something too.

Also nice to see those heading to OSU. Lots of really talented kids from D’s high school attend and love it.

ETA: for the love of Pete, I should not post from my phone. I’ve had to edit this a billion times.

DS just got an invitation to interview THIS WEEKEND for a full ride scholarship through a private foundation. This will be his first interview so I’d appreciate any advice on what he should wear and how to prepare for the interview. Are khaki pants, button down, and blazer good? Tie?

My overachiever kid went skiing today (her one class today was canceled), blowing off her Teacher Assistant class and after-school Student Council commitment, and I was DELIGHTED!!! She had a great time skiing w/ a friend who was in town from the East Coast. I would be so happy if she continues to chill a bit in next few months!

Congratulations @S18D20mom! Yes to all.

Sounds like your D had a good time, @MomOutWest !

@S18D20mom Congratulations!!! How exciting. My S18 just went to his first interview on Friday. They specified business casual in the invitation so he wore a dress shirt, dress pants and dress shoes. I noticed there was a mix of this type of outfit or similar with and without ties. A few wore jackets. There were also some kids there for a Legal Scholar program and the parents said the invitation didn’t specify dress. All the boys for that were either dressed as you described or a few had suits. Seems like your idea would be appropriate. Some of the guys also wore ties with the school colors, which my son thought was a bit much (school color is orange).

Be sure he is ready to talk about his application and why that school/that program. And tell him that he has worked hard for this and deserves it. It’s a big deal and I think kids need to feel as confident as possible. Mine was really nervous and I think the short pep talk right before the interview helped.

@S18D20mom, great opportunity for your son. Some thoughts:

Know about the Foundation’s purpose (mission statement) and values

Talk about how his goals match with the values of the Foundation

Talk about how the scholarship will help him achieve his life goals

Be friendly; show appreciation for the opportunity; be humble - but not afraid to sell himself to the interviewer(s)

If dress requirements are not expressly stated on the invitation, it’s always best to dress for success

Be genuine - be yourself

Best of luck to him!!

@gclsports - Every time the UCLA annual fund people called us I would say “if you had let my husband into medical school there he wouldn’t have had to pay $$$$$ to go to USC and we would have had some money to give you, but you didn’t so hit the bricks”.

S18 has not hit senioritis for classes yet but he has been saying that he might not do his Spring sport. I have been encouraging him to finish out the 4 years because I think he will regret it later.Part of the issue is that the Spring season continues past the Seniors’ last day of school, so he would have to come back for a couple of weeks.

@vistajay No getting the bump up to an A if it’s close at our school. S has 2 Bs, both less than 0.4 away from the A (on a 93-100 scale). So close to an UW 4.0, but yet so far…

@gclsports I would absolutely say something to Wash U when they ask for money. What a great point to make to them about affordability.

Waiting for 6 decisions in this household. S seems ok about it, probably because he’s so busy. But I’m a big-time planner and ready to go!

@S18D20mom Here was the tips given to my DD before her first interview. Don’t sit until they tell you to sit. Shake hand firmly. Have 2-3 questions for you to ask them at the end. As for dress, we have been to 3 interviews-- The clothing had been wide range. Biggest thing would be clean cut and no wrinkles. Good luck!!!

I spoke too soon. Just as I was posting about DD hearing nothing in February, she received a likely letter from the Dean of Admissions at Wellesley College! DD is sky high.

Congratulations to her, @glido! WOOHOO!

@appalachymom i too have planner genes, as does DD. Unbeknownst to her, i have a list of the accepted student days in April at the colleges shes applying to. Some schools havent posted yet but many have. She has so many school events in april that its going to be a major planning rush to schedule it all once decisions come out. Crossing fingers.

Congrats @glido!

I don’t understand likely letters. If they send them, why can’t they just send an acceptance? Under what circumstances do they send a likely letter and then not accept - either outright reject or waitlist? It seems cruel to send out a likely letter and then not accept.

I’m just guessing with this, but at least for Ivy League schools, I believe they have an agreement to release decisions all on the same day. So for those schools, they’d be breaking the agreement to actually send an early acceptance. I’m not sure why Wellesley wouldn’t just outright accept. Also, I am not aware of any instance where someone received a likely letter that was later retracted.
