@melvin123 I too do not quite understand the concept of a likely letter! That does not change the fact that it is awesome to receive one! Congrats to @glido 's daughter!
@klbmom18, that’s a brilliant idea to factor in potential accepted student days & make sure too many things don’t conflict on the April calendar. That’s such a small window of time to make any required visits while still meeting school and extracurricular commitments and then have to make a final decision by May 1st.
OK, thanks to you I’m going to start my own research now.
@glido, congrats to your DD on the likely letter - very exciting news!!
@glido congratulations on the likely letter. That’s really big news.
@glido yes, sorry, that is fantastic news, and I’m happy for your daughter.
My worry-wart personality was in full view.
Waiting for all of these decisions and choices is not my strong suit!
Good news this morning - S18 accepted to UC Irvine and invited into the honors program. So glad that we are hearing from some of the UCs earlier than expected.
Senioritis or not, DS always struggles 3rd quarter. I blame the short days. His brother has similar issues but not quite as bad. I was hoping UF acceptance and national merit would left his mood but I think he has just shifted his anxiety into frustration with silly busy work. I mean, AP psych is trying to have him write a 400 word essay daily. That’s just one class. It’s hard to get mad when I would probably have tried to get out of that work myself. But he signed up for it so he’s got too get through it.
DS was excited yesterday when he found out he was a SF for National Beta Club scholarship. Then he told me he has to write two more 500 word essays for next round. Ugh. He wants to do it, but I felt bad for him. He hates writing essays.
I think he is focused on eliminating any cost difference between UK and U of L with some of these smaller scholarships.
@lovespink My D was accepted to CHP at UCI this morning too. Good news. I’m an alum – it’s funny to think of her going to the same place I did.
Senior DD last night doing her homework for AP Euro and Forensic Science :
“Hey mom would you ever have guessed that homework for my senior year of high school would consist of making a yarn beard for my portrayal of Leonardo DaVinci and making fake blood with corn syrup to recreate a crime scene?”
@LMHS73 sorry! I just hope i don’t jinx anything by looking up the information! Part of the problem too is that spring break is in MARCH. So there’s not a week to play with in April this year.
@LOUKYDAD it sounds like your DS is still showing a preference for UK even with the GEMS offer at U of L?
My DS is so tired of essays too!
Just received our OOS financial aid package from Michigan. Knew it was a NFW but to see it in print is still a shock. $22,000 spread between net cost and EFC (yep we understand the difference between CSS and FAFSA but it still doesn’t change the fact that we have had to be meticulous to afford EFC) Aaaargh…so hard to think that we’ve got an academically qualified student that has two parents that work (in industries that don’t give bonuses or stock options) and save who can’t get the education she wants. Cost of attendance is out of control. Ok getting off my soap box now and embracing the other schools that have been very fair with grants and merit.
@S18D20mom yes I think he is. Makes my stomach hurt to watch him pass on the GEMS offer, but I expect him to. He has another scholarship interview event this weekend for Louisville (Brown Fellows) and he wants to go through with it. Or his exact words were actually “I don’t really have much reason not to do it I guess”. Kind of telling isn’t it?
@RelocatedYankee You just hit the nail on the head for me. I am really struggling with that right now.
OOS attendance has always been comparatively unaffordable, hasn’t it? I know when I was going to college the only options on the table were California public universities.
@S18D20mom congrats to your S! Your S and my D have both applied to Baylor. Maybe they will meet one day! Lol! If not, best of luck to wherever he chooses. He sounds like a very bright young man!
The Likely Letter - Do they hold a LIKELY Admitted Students Day? No, then just send the kid an acceptance!
@RelocatedYankee Did they throw in a Parents Plus loan so they could say they almost met your needs?
A parents Plus Loan is the biggest scam in financial aid. Its like going into a car dealership and hearing “just pay the MSRP - we’ll get you a loan big enough to make it work”
Congrats @glido Wellesley is awesome. I assume that the likely letter here came as part of the Early Evaluation option? great news
