I’d say that in the last 2 months we’ve averaged 3 mailings per week from Alabama. Maybe they’ve cranked-up the marketing for the NMF kids?
@LOUKYDAD Looking forward to hearing about your son’s Brown Fellows interviews! My D16 was invited for a Brown Fellows interview a few years ago and then decided to attend another school and ended up declining the interview. Louisville was a little bit too big of a city for her/our comfort level, but I know it is a great program. D18 visited UK, which I loved but she did not. She got her admission email from the UK honors program last week, even though we had already cancelled her admission. Anyway, been following along to see what your son decides since I am familiar with both schools. Good luck to him this weekend!
@LMHS73, Alabama gave up on S a while ago. He gets almost zero mail from any school now actually.
I don’t understand why S still gets mailings from Alabama. Didn’t the application deadline close a while ago?
Still getting mailings from Alabama here too. Another one came today.
My D is getting mailings from Alabama too…and phone calls asking her to attend local information sessions. Seems a little late to be making this push. She has no interest in applying.
DD got inundated from Reed - we received all kinds of things from Reed. The thing that was the most unique, was the hand written B-Day from University of Oregon - She never applied or showed any interest whatsoever to the Ducks but they had her B-Day and sent her a very cute card
D18 got two pieces of mail from Alabama today.
@bacmom we are in a similar situation as you. We also attended the “More2Explore” for Fulton School of Engineering. We’re impressed with Tooker House, Tempe campus, Engineering faculty etc… We are from southern CA and also waiting for news from UC and CSU schools. However, our daughter did speak up and she was pleasantly surprised by ASU overall. She thinks ASU is a great fit for her. Our S is a current sophomore in engineering at a UC school. So I cannot be biased. The reason we’re looking outside of CA is because of how impacted all the UCs and some CSUs are. Most STEM and business majors are impacted. Most freshmen are usually accepted as undeclared or pre-majors. For example, if UCSD accepted your D as undeclared, she would have to complete all the pre-reqs and have a high enough UC GPA to be in a pool with other qualified students competing for a limited spots in the impacted majors. As of last year, the average UCSD GPA from students applying for the College of Engineering was 3.99 (highly competitive process). Do your research, business schools might have different stats. I recommend taking your D to visit a couple of CSU and UC campuses for comparison purposes. It’s about fit/match and where your D has the best chance of success, college experience and making friends/connections. Good luck!
@bighero8 - Are you looking at Barrett at ASU? I am in AZ and I have heard a lot of problems with students not in Barrett getting classes and/or being encouraged to take their classes online because there isn’t enough space on campus to have the classes.
I will say that I was down there last night seeing a show and I was impressed with the facilities.
@SnowflakeDogMom, I like your new avi!
We are on the Bama frequent mail list too. DS is an admitted student so I’m guessing they are trying to keep themselves on his list. It’s currently not able to compete with Ole Miss financially.
@amominaz As of now D isn’t looking at Barrett. She wants to live at Tooker House her freshman year. Is the issue of getting classes pertain to all schools/colleges within ASU?
My D is pretty much only getting email and physical mail from schools she actually applied to, at this point. She finds it annoying because she sees each one as a tease when she’s hoping for an acceptance. But yes, I think the schools are trying to ensure they stay top of mind.
@bighero8 I share your concerns about how impacted the CSU and UC campuses are. I also have concerns about the cost of housing since she will be off campus at any CA school for 2-3 years, and let’s face it, CA housing isn’t cheap!
We looked outside of CA for two reasons. First, my husband and I plan to move out of CA as soon as she’s settled in college and aged 19 and weren’t sure how she’s be treated for residency purposes once we leave (it seems it won’t be a problem). Second, we are full pay so we decided to chase merit. ASU came through with merit and admission to Barrett, so it’s the only OOS school that we are considering at this point. My daughter has been accepted to CSULB already, but as you noted she is accepted as a pre-International Business major. I would love for her to attend ASU/Barrett, and will have her carefully weigh her options once we know where else she’s accepted. I hate that the CA schools take so long with notifications!
@EmptyNester2B thank you and thx for sharing your story. Looked like they invited 30 this year for 10 spots. I wonder how many have decided on other schools this year? Guess we will find out tomorrow.
S18 got a music school admit today to FSU, which is a game changer. Its a top music school for vocal performance, and with scholarships is very affordable. With no more decisions coming for a month or so, its time to update the odds game.
