@S18D20mom His scholarship is full ride (room, board, tuition, fees, books) plus a little left over, but it’s around $3k/year short of full cost of attendance (transportation, misc. expenses like TP and toothpaste). He’s allowed to stack outside scholarships until he reaches full COA, so yep, money in his pocket.
That’s not why he applied, though. If he makes it past the next cut, he becomes eligible for an Elks med school scholarship that’s limited to students who were national finalists in the MVS first. That’s a fairly small pool, comparatively speaking, so I’m hoping the odds of getting it (the med school one) will be higher than scholarships where thousands apply.
@LMHS73 Driving…Ugh
My DD is terrified of driving, she hates it, has no desire to do it and has decided that when she is done with school, she will live somewhere with great public transportation so that she never has to drive. She’s hoping for an urban setting for Medical School if she continues on that path.
This is foreign to me, I could not wait to drive, I also am the primary driver in the family (we all hate DH’s driving, so years ago, I took the wheel when we are together). My DS could not wait to drive, driving was freedom and he was ready. DD, nope, she will use a friend, uber or whatever public transportation she can. Unfortunately, where we live there are almost no options other than her feet or Uber. There is a metro rail she utilizes to get into Austin to meet up with friends but she has to hitch a ride to the metro station as there are no community buses that feed to it. Public transportation in central Texas sucks!
I’ve offered driving school, she has had a permit for 3.5 years, she is just not interested as she says it just scares her.
Add us to the dead zone. He just has 3 schools left to hear from on admits, plus a few scholarships. But nothing until mid to late March. S18 is just happy to be done with music school auditions and scholarship weekends. Now he can concentrate on his last HS musical. It will certainly be wistful seeing him perform in HS one last time, but he is going into a performance major and I know there are more musicals in his future, starting this summer. We also have S22 performing in the same HS musical, so music will remain in the house for at least 4 more years.
This will be a big week of news for DS. I should say the last big week of news for this part of the process. Letter from Brown Fellows at U of L (anticipating they are mailing today) and Singletary at U of K (mailed by March 1).
@SnowflakeDogMom, terrified of driving, hates it, no desire… yes, you just described my DD as well. It’s been a challenge; driving is about as much fun to her as getting her wisdom teeth pulled out!!!
@LMHS73 This is us. I struggle with how much to push the issue. If one is truly terrified of something, is there a reasonable argument to force it when it is not a mandatory life sustaining need?
JMO but I would force the driving issue before they leave for college. It’s kind of like learning how to swim. They may be able to get by without it but it will diminish the quality of their life and will only get harder to overcome as they age. Now if they will live in NYC all their life, never mind.
DD was accepted to SDSU (& Honors College) and UCI (& Campuswide Honors Program). Now I think we just wait for mid March for the other UCs and USCw (most likely NFW).
DS has finally scheduled some visits to Washington State and Colorado State/Mines. He finished his scholarship app for Colorado St. just in the nick of time (due 3/1).
So now we sit and wait. If DS gets accepted to Cal Poly (acceptances are late this year) do we cancel the trips to see other schools or do we go and see just to see what his other options are? I don’t know.
My older D16 was terrified of cars her whole life. She reluctantly agreed to learn because we have zero public transportation here. It was a struggle, but very worth it. She drives just fine now. I’m sure she still prefers not too.
S will be a CS Scholar at UTD along with @3scoutsmom’s S, and he’s very excited about that. S also applied for the UTD Clark summer research program, so that is the last college-related notification he is waiting for. His robotics EC is going into competition season and once that winds down it will be time for S to apply for jobs. Clark is very competitive so he needs to have a job lined up in the (likely) event that he does not get chosen for Clark. He will see if his CS teacher can help him find a coding job, but if not he’ll apply for the “usual” summer jobs (retail, food service, etc).
@SnowflakeDogMom, I agree with vistajay - it seems like something that might be a necessary evil for them. She has done well on the regular streets, but is nervous about roundabouts & she has yet to venture out on to a highway. She thinks the driving school might help because the instructor has access to another set of controls which makes her less skittish. She’s scheduled for 3 lessons (2 hours each); I’ll let you know how it turns out for her.
congrats @scoutsmom and @traveler98 on CS scholar. I guess your sons will definitely get to know each other at UTD which is kinda cool. And good luck @scoutsmom at McDermott weekend. That is going to be hard to keep quiet about when you will want to shout from the rooftop.
I couldn’t come on CC today because I kept getting a foolish spam pop up.
D also not yet driving. She has her permit and the goal is drivers license by the time she leaves for college but honestly the practicing really takes a backseat to just about everything else. Can I say how much I hate trying to teach her. I’m just too nervous. She is taking official lessons but is supposed to be practicing…
She did get good news. She got an early write acceptance from Smith College. She was shocked and thrilled. Took some of the edge off the wait for the rest in late March
We are in limbo here.
6 schools yet to hear from.
He is going to spend time with team but not overnight this weekend (if you remember my query last week).
Finally got his scholarship update from Minnesota–keeps that in the running.
I sympathize with you as our daughter is the same. We also live in NJ and feel Rutgers is the best fit. However we are concerned with the size of the school and the need for busing.
@Batchit I saw your D also applied to Rowan. Did she apply to TCNJ? My D wants small and was not interested in Rutgers because it is so big. Rowan isn’t small, but at least it’s walkable.
