@ShrimpBurrito - a very decisive young lady. Congrats to her and her very proud family!
@ShrimpBurrito congratulations on your daughter’s swim career! Sad to see it end, but this frees up so much more time to try other things. Plus, no one will miss all that chlorine or the morning practices (speaking as a former swimmom).
My son had his senior night this past weekend. I did not expect the tears, but they flowed. This is my last kid home and I am not prepared for the end of this parenting journey. I loved my full house and will be very lonely in the fall. boo-hoo.
@ShrimpBurrito awwwwww, those are hard moments. It’s been 10+ years and my DS’s last steps (off) of the football field still bring a tear, it was a moment. Congrats on all the decisions! On to new exciting things while we Mom’s tuck those memories away.
@DiotimaDM Sounds like you have raised a wonderful young man! Congrats and Happy Birthday!
My DD’s school ranked, honestly, she didn’t care and therefore I didn’t pay much attention.
Thanks all. I was totally fine all weekend, but when she touched the wall for the final time, with a new best time in her favorite event, the floodgates opened! :(( Totally caught me off guard. D will stick around the club team for awhile, as they’ll play water polo (which she loves!) until long course season training starts, and she’ll continue coaching the little kids. So, she’s easing out of the pool life, but is done competing. @stemmmm, my car will still smell like chlorine for a few more years, as my S20 is serious about his swimming! Big road trip next week to his first Sectionals. <:-P
Meanwhile, after D’s social media announcement yesterday morning, she spent the rest of the day messaging with faraway friends about McGill! Turns out several of the people she connected with at the McGill summer academy are also planning to attend in the fall. She’s had a roommate request, and is happily chatting with a guy from France who will do the same major/minor combo. I feel the ground shifting.
My best to all the other parents out there dealing with massive mixed emotions. This is hard! >:D<
@ShrimpBurrito - Wow! Good for her - Way to go out with a PR! Very cool.
Does anyone have any experience with the Lions Club Speech Contest?
I think we took a pretty big step toward a decision today. DS auditioned for the Ole Miss band this morning. They asked us to stop back by after our other appointments. We did and they gave him an acceptance letter for the band with a scholarship offer!
It is so exciting to hear about this process wrapping up for some students! Congratulations to all of you! And, ShrimpBurrito, I’m feeling you and all of the other parents whose children are wrapping up athletic and performing arts extra curriculars. I know I’ll be sad when my daughter dances for her last school performance and last showcase with her youth ensemble. Luckily, she is pursuing a BFA in dance. We are still waiting on 2 acceptances and 3 financial awards.
The waiting is hard!
@TexasMom18 and @ShrimpBurrito and everyone else with steps forward…Congratulations! It is nice to see light at the end of the tunnel. I am looking forward to being closer to a decision.
DS18 signed and mailed back her U of Cincinnati Excellence scholarship agreement today. It’s a relief to see the scholarship in writing and have confirmation of it now that we have confirmation of NMF status. She has already accepted attendance at UC and we went to the Honors Brunch this weekend. Everything is falling into place. She is super excited to be wrapping up High school and moving on to the next chapter of her life, except of course the 8 AP tests she has to take in May! Next step- Housing applications open March 1. We haven’t heard anything about signing up for orientation though, unless we missed that memo.
We had an abrupt end to track, my D fell on her knee a month ago, stayed off it for two weeks and then returned to practice. First meet it swelled up pretty badly and now we are getting a MRI. Had I known that was the last meet, I might have fought the traffic to get there. Just hoping we won’t need surgery.
Two big scholarship interviews this week plus two dance performances. And then more waiting!
Ooh rough @ollie113
I get it! I’m so glad I made the trip this fall to a pretty unimportant xc meet because it turned out to be the last meet pre-stress fracture.
I thought I’d have the chance to watch DS run during track season this year, but he’s decided that his schedule won’t permit him to participate. He’s a bit disappointed but is also out of shape and is reluctant to face another bout of shin splints. I retrospect, I’m glad that I did my best to attend all his cross country meets during first quarter. It was so early in the year, it hadn’t really settled that it was SENIOR YEAR and it would be my last time to see him run. I suspect I’d be in the same boat as @ShrimpBurrito had he decided to run his track events.
@ollie113 Sending good thoughts to your D as she recovers.
@DiotimaDM Belated birthday greetings to your DS!
@TexasMom18 congrats! My D16 is a sophomore at Ole Miss and absolutely loves it there!
Everyone is so quiet today. Must be waiting for March.
I know @melvin123, the silence is deafening today!
Next week, we’re off to visit UT Dallas & the surrounding area for 3 days & will attend their National Merit Preview Day on the 9th.
The week after, I’ve signed D up for some lessons from a driving school (she still has her learner’s permit) because she says that I freak her out too much when she drives with me.
Then on Mar 19th, she flies out to WashU for a 3-day visit to include scholarship interviews & some fun campus events.
A visit to the dentist & some school commitments fill-in the other days - busy month!!
We’re on results watch for the Elks MVS this week.
Official notice is due on Friday, but sometimes the next application shows up early in the portal, where it might be noticed by the sort of person who obsessively refreshes the page umpty-odd times a day. Not that I know anyone like that, of course. B-)
I’m ready for this board to be bustling with good news again…or any news for that matter.
It’s boring to log in and have zero notifications.
@DiatomaDM since your DS already has a full ride, will the Elks scholarship be money in his pocket?
I think we’re in an admissions dead zone. Mid-March has a LOT of schools (including all the UCs) announcing, then end of March has all the LACs and Ivies. University of Texas (March 1) seems to be the exception.
DS18 heard he made it into the Computing Scholars Program at UTD (only 30 kids accepted and I know another cc 18 made it too:-)). We are waiting to hear about the Clark summer research program and will be attending the McDermott scholarship weekend this weekend but have heard that you can’t say anything until the public release date, last year it was May 2nd!!! even though you have to sign a binding contract about a week after the event if you are picked.
