My D scheduled her orientation for July, after her AP scores came out, so when she met with her advisor to schedule classes they took them into consideration.
I’ve told my son to start over in Calc regardless of his AP score. He’s pretty much cruising in Physics this year though, so if he gets a 5 on the test I think he’d be fine skipping the first college physics class. He’s known as the curve buster in the class.
How will you qualify for a car loan if you work part time?
Would your dad have a car you could use? Have you reached out to the internship company to see if they have inexpensive housing you could live in temporarily?
S(17) skipped Calc 1 and Calc 2 with AP credit. He was only required to take Calc 1 and Calc for Engineers (a combined Calc2/Calc3 class that contains less theory). He went out of his way to meet with a math advisor at orientation who he convinced to sign a form to place him right into Calc 3 (note he doesn’t even NEED Calc 3 for his major (he could have taken the Calc 1 credit and signed up for Calc for Engineers and had a class that was mostly review)). This was AMA–against mother advice. But it’s his gig, right? He struggled in Calc 3, but he passed it. Didn’t do great things for his GPA, but fortunately he had good grades in his other classes. I completely believe in advising and letting them make their own choices. One thing that he had been told by a faculty member at the school he is attending (during a prospective student visit) was that if you scored 5 in Calc AP tests to just take the AP credit because it’s not uncommon for freshman to not take classes seriously when they could have tested out of them and end up with something less than an A anyway.
My S made it to state chorus!
Well, S officially declined two of his accepted colleges today: Furman and College of Charleston. It’s not right to wait until May 1 when he knows he’s not going to attend there. This weekend he plans to formally do his FAFSA loan stuff. We’re still waiting on 4 scholarship decisions. Two decisions should be this month and I think 2 are in May.
@mommdc Congratulations to your S! What an accomplishment!
@apraxiamom Great job in your S moving forward!
D did not win the scholarship she was waiting to hear about. She seemed to take it well and in perspective knowing there were hundreds of applicants competing for two awards. I was very disappointed for her.
The nice news for me, if not D, is that she got an invite from the Society of Women Engineers to a reception on an Accepted Students Day at the best price school. I think this will be a good opportunity for her to get a better perspective of the college and the community.
The exciting news in my family is that my oldest D passed the board certification exam in her profession. I am so happy for her. So we had ups and downs yesterday.
If you would care to participate:
Final decisions thred
All acceptance s thred
@1822mom has been doing a tremendous job of keeping the acceptances thred in order. Hopefully toward the end of the summer we can combine the two threds so everything is in one place by highlighting the final decision on the acceptance thred, but for now we thought it would be easier to read and keep things organized this way!
Sounds like there are some really amazing, accomplished kids in this class!
March is going to be a stressful, long month here I think. D is in at all of her safety schools with great merit aid. Waiting on several RD schools, two which I consider matches and the rest (including her number 1 choice) I believe are reaches (she matches stats of accepted students at #1 school, but we know that doesn’t really matter). She did not get invites for the high scholarship finalist weekends at two of the RD schools, so even if she gets in I have no idea what kind of merit aid she would even get. Fretting! She is doing some local scholarship applications in hopes of maybe getting 1-2 of those, but they are small awards. I am trying to somewhat plan ahead about how we would get to some of these RD admitted visit days in April with spring break, prom, and a school activity all already scheduled in April.
@MACmiracle thank you!
Sorry your younger D didn’t get the super competitive scholarship but I’m happy she got the invitation from the other school.
Also congrats to your older D on passing the board certification!
D is now done to waiting on the last two competitive scholarships, one for an extra $5,000 and the other for full tuition. We should hear in mid-March.
@adjaclaw sounds like we are in the same boat. Four RDs out there…one a reach for sure, would be surprised if she got in. The second one just released it’s top merit acceptances and she did not get one so I am pretty sure if she gets in it will be NFW…but she applied to the most competitive program there so I am thinking we might dodge that bullet. If she applied to the school in general it would have been more of a chance. The third also is very competitive for her program so we would most likely be in the same NFW boat. The fourth is a wild card. Her test scores are her weakest part of her profile and this school was test optional so there is no way to gauge this one.
We are focusing on loving the top three targets/safeties in her pocket two of which have great merit. Visiting them all now as our April is like yours and if she has to go back to a March RD in April there will only be time for that. She also is applying to outside scholarships. I just want to fast forward through March…yet I want time to slow down for senior year.
One topic I have wanted to bring up here …has anyone else’s students been receiving emails about how if they participate in student protests this month (in regards to guns in schools) and are disciplined by their high school it will not factor into admissions decisions as the colleges support the students? My daughter received this from the “wild card” school last week and one she is already in. Her friends have also received this from some of their potential schools. Our seniors will be at their internships on March 14th so they will not be participating but I find these communications interesting. It really is encouraging students to participate.
@MinnieFan We definitely sound like we are in the same boat—we are visiting the EA schools now too. Have done two (one is a top choice, the other was a reluctant visit) and another visit next weekend (also a top choice of the safeties.) Can’t seem to get her interested in the flagship school, but I still bring up visiting it here and there
A couple of her schools have tweeted messages about the protesting and how it won’t be considered in the admissions decisions. Our high school still has not addressed how they are going to handle that.

Shame on any high school that disciplines students for a peaceful protest about something so important and relevant to even the administrators. Good for colleges for recognizing that.
@adjaclaw @MinnieFan Can I join your boat?
In at all the EAs, as we’d hoped/expected. One is now a frontrunner, as she has been invited to join August preseason for a fall sports team (to tryout) - and she’ll be going to admitted student day in in mid April, combined w/ a “recruit” overnight/itinerary w/ the team/coach. (Coach had dismissed her last year, but it seems she did not get all the incoming freshmen she wanted to, so now my D is back on the table! No sour grapes, D is pumped.) Anyway, if it turns out D hates the school/team, we are sort of screwed, as we’ll have 2 weeks to cram in other East Coast (from Colorado) visits for plan B. D’s April is PACKED w/ prom and track and other senior things… AND if D miraculously gets into dream school Ivy on March 28, that could screw w/ everything… go to “lesser” school to play varsity sport, or go to Ivy and play club…?? So many unknowns.
And D does not want to visit any schools during March spring break because college boyfriend will also be home. Trying to respect that. (And I swear to you if he breaks up w/ her then I’m going to flip the freak out and lament lost opportunity to travel to EA schools!!! I’m actually surprised they lasted long distance this long…)
@minnefan University of Delaware posted a statement on Instagram that they would not hold any peaceful lawful excise of 1st amendment rights against applicants.
@MomOutWest That is exciting about the sports tryout!! It helps to know so many others are in limbo too!
My daughter is under holistic review at LSU …does anyone know anything about this process ?
