@lovespink An apple pie sounds like a good idea, I took a peek at the Cal Poly thread and quickly backed away. So many kids disappointed, it makes me feel awful.
@crazy4info Hotty Toddy! I’ve joined a couple of FB groups. Trying to get DS to join the student one.
@EmptyNester2B and @dragonmom3 Ole Miss was our best option financially. The first time we toured I think DS had his heart set on Bama so he just went along with it and didn’t really consider it. When we went last week with it as a serious contender he gave it more attention and discovered he really liked it. Auditioning for the band and getting an additional scholarship was certainly a boost. His college choice announcement on Twitter has been retweeted by the Ole Miss and a lot of current students and alum have been tweeting him welcoming him to “the family”.

How cool is that?!
Congrats on all the Ole Miss scholarships! There are A LOT of influential Ole Miss alumni in my neck of the woods.
@TexasMom18 re: Ole Miss. They had me at “hello” the first time I called to schedule a campus visit for D16 back in Fall 2015. Every single person we have encountered on that campus has been so pleasant and so helpful. Same for the Oxford community. My D16 loves it there and we enjoy visiting.
@dragonmom3 Ole Miss really does have amazing OOS merit aid and we have been very impressed with the quality of D16’s academic and leadership opportunities on that campus.
Only been to Lubbock once - it was in mid March 2012 and we were in the process of relocating from Northern Nevada to Central Texas. DS was with us for the relocation road trip, he was in college at the time and TTU’s PT school was on his radar so we toured, he met with the dean of the PT program etc.
The things I remember about Lubbock:
It was flat…really really flat.
It was cold, rainy and windy.
It smelled funny - farm like, perhaps cattle?
The hotel we were at had a Texas shaped waffle iron.
The things I remember about the campus:
Parking was a hassle.
The building where the PT program was housed was impressive.
Everyone was nice, accommodating and friendly.
Since DD would not consider a Texas school, we never even looked at TTU and DS went elsewhere for his grad program, his GPA was .010 too low to apply to the TTU PT program.
@suzy100 It has been surreal. His video (yes he did a video choosing the hat of the school!) has been viewed 6500+ times! But the welcome he has received has really cemented his decision. He’s been wearing a permagrin.
@EmptyNester2B I completely agree on the friendliness. DS is big on manners and being respectful so I think he’ll fit in well there.
Now we wait on the CME decision coming next week. That would be the cherry on top of this Ole Miss decision.
I am envious of everybody whose child has made a commitment. We have eliminated a few for financial reasons (Michigan, Penn State) but daughter is still enamoured with many of the schools she’s been accepted to. Revisits are scheduled and I am trying to find a way to have her embrace one school and leave the others behind with no regrets. I have a feeling this decision is going to be made on April 30. Hope you are all still reading and chiming in by then. My best guess at odds are:
Pitt - 30%
UVA - 25%
Clemson - 25%
Fordham - 10%
Boston College - 5%
UConn - 5%
@RelocatedYankee you and me both! I think I will be able to draw his focus after Pi day. He is focused on the potential acceptance to his dream reach.
I think DS has made his decision for his best financial offer and safety, choosing Alabama over Tennessee Tech and University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
There are a couple Ohio schools, OU and Miami that have made generous offers. I think Miami would win over OU for it’s undergrad focused teaching, and we are going to visit them and Purdue the first week of April. Neither are particularly strong in CS. Not sure they are any stronger than Alabama and cost more money.
RIT and Purdue have been in the mix, but we just got the financial award letter from RIT, and with their increase in costs this year, it is about $6k more than Purdue after their respective scholarships. Purdue is stronger in CS I believe.
NEU is likely NFW even with merit - well we could maybe afford it stretching, but probably not willing to stretch much beyond about $35 for any school besides MIT.
That leaves MIT, Case, U Rochester and RPI decisions still pending. Have a feeling Rochester might come in as NFW and potentially Case/RPI depending on merit. It’s been a wild ride with the variety of schools applied too and the results. Definitely won’t have a decision prior to April unless Pi day proves fruitful.
I am READY for a decision to be made and the next steps taken, so I can mentally move on.
@chattchia Pi day? Sorry for my ignorance but what does that mean?
Pi = 3.14159265
its a math thing - DD has a “Pi” day every year on March 14 - her friends come over and they bake pie in honor of Pi
@burghdad, it’s when MIT releases their decisions. March 14, or 3.14.
@suzy100 Thanks… Those MIT folks really have a sense of humor…lol
This Friday is the last day of the marking period for final senior ranking. Unless something crazy happens S should keep his unweighted 4.0, and it will be interesting to see if that is good enough for him to hang onto his recent rise to number 3. As far as he can tell there’s no chance he could bump up into the salutatorian spot. I don’t know if his school does anything special for the top 10 students; I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
@ChattaChia Wow! Alabama to MIT…and I thought we had a broad range of contenders. My daughter says that if she could pick up Pitt and UPMC, move it to someplace sunnier, give it a touch of southern charm, a much better football and/or basketball team, lots of school spirit and the price tag of our state flagship it would be a definite yes. Hahaha, I think we have our work cut out for us. Fingers crossed for your son on Pi day.
@RelocatedYankee do you think Pitt does not have much school spirit? I’ll admit it seems the kids are very devoted from the little I’ve seen on visits but I’m honestly not sure how it compares to other big time schools. It’s my daughter’s absolute favorite but we could have used a touch more financial love. I’m curious if you’ve heard that there isn’t a lot of spirit, she hasn’t committed yet and love any insight. I know the teams arent having a lot of success recently but it’s definitely a great sports town. They love their steelers and pens.
My kids have always loved Pi Day. Math club always went to dinner. I carved a pumpkin with the Pi symbol on it a couple years back. Who doesn’t like pumpkin pi? Geek fun.
Pitt has a lot of school spirit however, their teams have not been as competitive in any of the major sports. They compete in the a very competitive ACC and they are usually in the middle of the pack They also have to compete with Pittsburgh major league teams such as the NFL, MLB, and Hockey… Having said that, they are a major University in a major city and compete in a major conference… I would think that the school spirit is miles ahead of similar schools such as Miami U, Delaware, and U Mass… but probably not at the level of Michigan, Penn State, OSU, UGA, etc…
@1917souci that makes a lot of sense. I didn’t go to a big time sports college (Delaware) and we had a blast at football games but it wasn’t a huge deal like Penn State et al. My daughter will probably be comfortable with Pitt’s level of sports enthusiasm, it wasn’t a major factor for her; however she did want a school with a lot of spirit and pride. We don’t currently know any kids that attend so it’s good to hear how the sports scene and overall pride level compare. We’re looking at all aspects of each of her options right now…funny you mentioned 2 of the other schools where she was accepted!
@AmyBeth68 No, I don’t know that Pitt lacks school spirit, and based upon what you’ve said I think we’ve scheduled our revisit properly. We’ve got Pens tickets for the evening of the accepted students event! Saw the half filled Heinz field this fall and the woeful finish to the Pitt basketball season yesterday and passed judgement. It’s an ideal academic fit for our daughter and gets mom and dads vote.
