@bighero8 Congrats! My daughter too was accepted to Cal Poly SLO. Was intrigued by your off campus housing years 2-4 remark. I know they are opening new dorms in 2018. Is there an on campus housing shortage?
@AmyBeth68 I’m sorry about no Chancellor invite at Pitt. We are right there with you re Baylor. I will hope the hail mary comes through for your daughter. I am learning through this process with S18 and high stat CC kids…these competitive scholarships are incredibly hard to get!
S18 didn’t get the big institutional scholarship at Franciscan. He’s taking it well, but I’m disappointed for him. He still has the diocese, Knights and Newman society scholarships out there.
The bank has replaced the money and is sending me a new card from the weekend’s fraud issue.
@S18D20mom I’m sorry but I have to disagree with you on the climate in Lubbock. It’s only acceptable if you like hot and dry, possibly windy for summer and cold, dry and windy for winter. Spring and fall are the best two weeks of the year. :))
@apraxiamom I’m sorry about the Franciscan scholarship. I hope you get good news soon.
Thanks goodness the bank acted quickly and you could get your money.
@AmyBeth68 and @apraxiamom sorry about the disappointing news…what a rollercoaster everyone is on! (Us as well…this just happens to be a straight track week but potential dips, turns and climbs are right around the corner).
Congratulations to those are getting good news this week! We all like living through your joy to keep the hopes and spirits up around here.
31 days of March and we have 6 down people…onward we go!!!
@ollie113 you have a good point, but compared to the heat/humidity of central Texas, many prefer the dry heat and the increased chance of seeing snow.
Oh no @apraxiamom, I’m so sorry seems we’re in the same boat.
Thanks for all the kind comments… We’re staying positive and once all the chips are on the table she can make an informed decision. This process certainly teaches patience, humility and grace.
@AmyBeth68 , so sorry to hear about the Pitt Chancellor’s outcome. That’s a real bummer.
@ollie113 try a western pa winter. Compared to that Lubbock is the Caribbean…lol
@pickledginger is your son interviewing? If so I wish him all the luck! Hoping a few cc kids get the award!
Speaking of weather considerations, DD has two acceptances so far: Tulane (with surprise merit) and St. Andrews! Both are top choices for her, although she’s still waiting on a few others. Anyway, we are all kind of chuckling about how Tulane and St. Andrews couldn’t be more different climate-wise
@GMC2918 I’ll see your Tulane/St Andrews weather extremes and raise you McGill/ASU, both on my D’s accepted list. But seriously, congrats on the acceptances, and on the merit at Tulane! It’s harder and harder to get as Tulane shoots up in the rankings. (I’m a big Tulane fan.)
@burghdad Has Pittsburgh won the Weather Channel’s “Toughest Weather City”? I stand by my opinion of Lubbock’s awful climate :-j
@TexasMom18 there is an Ole Miss parents page on FB that has been really helpful to me! My DD will be there this fall as well! Hotty Toddy!
@crazy4info & @TexasMom18 My D threw Ole Miss back into the ring of top contenders again today after not getting the big scholarship at Tennessee she was hoping for. With Ole Miss OOS merit aid, it’s the same cost for her to go there as it is to stay in state. So we will be doing visit #2 in a few weeks. By then we should know all the financial aid packages so it really comes down to how well she likes Ole Miss vs our in state option. I think she mostly doesn’t want to be so close to home. I love Oxford so I am fine with whatever she chooses.
OMG! S just got home from drama rehearsal, and he was called into a meeting with his principal and 11 other kids today. Turns out he’s #7 in his class of 500-ish! There were 12 kids in the meeting due to a 3-way tie at one of the positions. He gets a special cord at graduation, and the Top Ten (twelve) process into the stadium in class rank order.
He was never interested in class rank and doesn’t know his GPA other than “I think it’s somewhere around 4.5.” It’s doubly hard to rank as a theater kid in his school because only the first two years of honors fine & performing arts are allowed to be weighted.
He’s pleased, but he feels chagrined, too. He says it’s nice and all, but it doesn’t matter all that much to him, so he wishes he could opt out somehow or give his spot to someone who wanted it more.
@DiotimaDM tell him to walk proud to show other drama kids that this is possible - he not just walking with the top 10 (12) for himself but as a role model for others.
I just sat down today to review net price info we have so far out of my D’s five EA acceptances.
That $6600/year at Ole Miss (Honors, includes room and board) just got a second look from all of us.
About a quarter of the price of our in state publics!
Wow re: Ole Miss! That would be hard to pass up. Congrats to everyone with so many great choices. It’s a good problem to have.
Decided to take a break and bake an apple pie. Nice to just relax with the family. And a good break from the Cal Poly thread on CC. A few parents arguing about Cal Poly vs Stanford and REALLY sad to see incredible kids waitlisted, etc. Makes me very grateful my S was accepted.
