Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Got back from our spring break trip to Florida last night and sat down this morning with my coffee to catch up on over 200 posts on this thread! Congratulations to those with decisions made and choices narrowed down. Everythings seems to be coming together for so many of your kids and your excitement is contagious! Even those with some disapointments seem to be moving onward and upward (including S18). Decision coming soon!

“The School That Shall Not Be Named”…whispers *University of Washington * was a NO!

That is a wrap for us! Thank Goodness! 29 applications between my two daughters over the 2016/2018 = 26 acceptances, 1 guaranteed transfer, 1 waitlist and 1 rejection. I’d say we had a pretty good run!

This fall I will have a freshman at Texas A&M, a junior at Marquette and an empty nest at home.

@labegg I was dying to know the what the “the School That Shall Nat Be Named” was. I was wrong, I thought it might be Rice.

Congrats on finishing the process, @labegg! Sounds like a great outcome.

@3scoutsmom @labegg I was thinking Rice also

Thanks for sharing @labegg
I changed my mind about TSTMNBN frequently. My latest guess was WashU in St L—do I get partial credit? :))

S18 was denied at Georgia Tech, offered transfer opportunity for Fall 2019, if certain conditions are met. He and I agree: thanks but no thanks. He was grateful to be considered though.

Congratulations on all the decisions around here. Glad to know “The School’s” identity!

S sent off his financial aid appeal to Ithaca yesterday. He’s hoping they’ll match what the NPC said.

What a bumpy day and a half! S18 accepted to UCD, which was great. Then accepted to UW, yay, at first. Then noticed he wasn’t a direct admit to engineering so booo! Next up, letter from a university saying he didn’t get the big scholarship but they upped the merit dollars by a few thousand. And tonight, accepted to Rensselaer with some nice merit dollars. Whew!

I think the rest of March will continue this way but hope we end on a high note with one of the high reaches.

New to this post, but following. Daughter has gotten in to univ of wash. OOS. UCSB UCI CAL POLY. She’s still waiting for UCLA, UCB, UCSD. Now we are waiting to see how much aid she will get being out of state for Washington. When do they let her know? It’s so hard because she absolutely loves Washington but the cost is so high. How do others deal with this? We might just have to say no. Considering she has so many other choices that are in state already. Would love to hear how others dealt with this.

@momtwin - that is a hard one. Basically we told our daughter we weren’t going to pay basically private school tuition for another state’s state school. Especially being in CA where you have fantastic options. If your D gets enough FA to make it comparable, that is a different story. But say, for example, since you are in CA. If you are in state, UCLA is a smoking deal. USC is 4x the cost. UCLA is the superior choice from a bang for your buck standpoint. If you are, like me, in AZ, UCLA OOS and USC are basically the same price. In that scenario I would choose USC because for the $$ the student is going to get a lot more services, support, and bells/whistles than at UCLA. So, if you have the option of UCLA personally I would choose that over UW. I used UCLA and USC as examples because husband went to both UCLA and USC and I went to USC so they are two schools I have familiarity with.

@amominaz Thank you for your advice. I have the same feelings about the UC’s and if she gets into USC w some aid. I also have to remember that her older sister got into U of O and we said no for the same reason, OOS. We would never hear the end of that! Good luck to your child as well! It’s a very exciting time for them!

@momtwin, my DD16 really wanted to go to Purdue OOS, but that was quite unaffordable to us as we have 6 kids to pay for and she is 2nd kid in college (I have 4 kids and 2 stepkids, she is my oldest, my stepdaughter is 1 year older than her). We have saved some for each kid but certainly not enough for OOS state and DD16 had full scholarships to other schools. Purdue didn’t give her nearly enough scholarship money. So we told her to decide if it was worth it to her to pay the money herself what would be remaining after what we had saved for her and her scholarship money because we couldn’t afford to pay the difference. She chose to go the UTD because she has a full OOS scholarship there (we live in Ohio). She just got home last night for spring break and we talked about whether she is happy about her choice and she says she is happy because of all the opportunities she has gotten at UTD, with research and she already did a summer study abroad last summer that her scholarship included $6k at UTD, which she wouldn’t have gotten at Purdue. DD18 has chosen U of Cinci as she has Excellence scholarship which will cover tuition and room. Both girls are happy with choices to go to state schools (DD16 is out of state but full scholarship).

@momtwin we told our daughter she could go wherever she wanted but we would pay whatever room and board at UW is (we are in state), but she had to have merit to cover the rest, no loans, and sports scholarships did not count. She is planning grad/med school and we felt she needed to be debt free after undergrad. She has gotten into some great schools but they did not give her the money needed. Fortunatly several did show her a lot of love

@shelleee and @PlateauMama It’s hard when the kids get caught up in the excitement of getting into colleges. Both daughters want to go on to graduate school, so we don’t want to go into debt for their undergraduate. Fingers crossed for scholarship, but am realizing through this process with both daughters, we will probably not be getting much financial help. Income looks good on paper, but living in CA, doesn’t go far!

DD’18 got into the University of Washington for Engineering. Wonderful for her to have to have choices. She is still waiting on a few. It’s going to be a very busy next few weeks: she wants to visit some schools during her Spring break, but we need to hear from more schools in order to make the most efficient travel plans.

S’18 is at beach for spring break with friends (and at least one set of parents - we’re not crazy people). Thought it would be a good time to get house tented and take a few days with W. Well, house is tented and W diagnosed with flu yesterday. Ugh. Canceled hotel at Jekyll Island (bummer) and in a local hotel for the night until we are allowed back in the house. Hooray spring break.

Nice to have time over spring break to look. D’s break is last two weeks of March, so probably will not have heard from all of her apps. yet.

@dadotwoboys: Sorry you had to cancel Jekyll. Beautiful area. My neck of the woods. Hope you all feel better soon!

@dadotwoboys How disappointing! I hope you have a nice room and your W feels better soon. And stay well yourself!
