Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

I am working on my NCAA bracket - instead of picking by color I’m going to change it up this year and go by D’s college preferences. It’s already looking pretty gnarly, USC isn’t in the tournament. :))

Congratulations to your D, @glido!

@dadotwoboys, I’m so sorry that your spring break plans were derailed. That’s rough.

@momtwin, we definitely have cost constraints as well but it was (a little) easier here because I laid them out before apps went out so they knew that there might be some acceptances that we had to turn down because NFW.

Daughter’s last 2 schools won’t respond until late March and April 1. One other school with an acceptance wont send financials until late March. All of this to say that we will not be able to utilize spring break to re-visit. Instead, I’m taking my daughter to San Juan for 5 days. We were able to score round trip tickets for $100 each and an air bnb for a reasonable price. Youngest daughter rows and they start 2/days in preparation for the spring season. So, my husband will stay home and ferry her around. I am actually looking forward to 5 lazy days with just the 2 of us:) I know it will be crazy for the end of March and beginning of spring.

So my daughter knows she needs to start looking for a summer job.

I told her if she doesn’t find one outside the house, she can work for me.That means housework, including laundry. I have a job description ready if necessary. Conditions and hours will vary.

I have a feeling she will find one. :))

My S had been looking for a job and then we went out to eat some day and there was a “help wanted” sign. He has been working at that restaurant for over 2 years. He only works on the weekends now, but they schedule him more in the summer.

Decsion made and deposit paid. Son will be headed to the University of Tennessee in the fall! The school really had all that he was looking for and the siren call of the Great Smokey Mountains and the Tennessee River sealed the deal.

Son posted on Instagram (which apparently makes it officially official), picked his orientation date and started looking for a roommate. We could not be more excited for him. Go Vols!

@ollie113 - I was thinking the same thing as I looked at NCAA brackets - picking based on good college tours and ones that offer my S admission!

@Momma2018 also picking brackets. Picked the schools where apps still pending to win, for good luck.

We have reserved a tour at USC since we will be in California over spring break. On the USC page, they are predicting decisions around the time we’lL Be there. If it is a no, we will cancel and go to Disneyland or something!

@Booajo - do you have someone checking your mail? That whole acceptance informing process at USC seems a bit much IMO.

S waitlisted Cal Poly SLO but was accepted to SDSU business administration in December and really LOVES the school after a tour. He is also accepted to Santa Clara U (undeclared Economics major with $24k annual merit). Will visit SCU on upcoming admitted students day but if he really prefers SDSU is it a mistake to let him choose it? I hate for him to give up the Silicon Valley job internships and opportunities available through SCU, not to is mention smaller class size, student-teacher ratio, etc. Rejected UCD and not expecting any miracle from UCSB.

I would say look at SCU and see what happens. If he is a go-getter he will be able thrive in either environment.

@VaNcBorder : Congratulations! Go Vols!

@biscuit4reggie : Congratulations! Go Aztecs!

@biscuit4reggie, assuming you can afford either school, I’d say let him decide after he sees SCU, with maybe a return trip to SDSU as well depending how long it’s been since he toured SDSU. SDSU is a fine school and if your S feels that the fit is best there I wouldn’t force him to choose SCU if he doesn’t feel it is the best fit for him.

@amominaz We will have to arrange that if we haven’t heard before we leave. It is so annoying that there is no way to know–probably the box (or rejection letter) will still be in transit since we live far away.

@biscuit4reggie I guess I just don’t see SCU as that amazing of a school. I would have no qualms at all about choosing SDSU over it.

D is currently finishing overnight admitted student visit at safety school #2. She loved it. She also visited safety school #1 last month (but it was just a day-long session, no overnight and no real interaction with other admitted students). At the time she really liked it but now seems to like #2 school better. However, I think doing an overnight and being with your potential classmates gives a different feel than admitted student days where you are just in sessions and tours all day (with your parents).

So, I believe that if all goes haywire this week and next with match and reach schools she will be happy at one of these two. Of course, I think of all the blood, sweat and tears that went into the applications and scholarship applications for said RD schools and am wondering if she is actually not going to end up at one of them after all that! I guess we will see!

Congratulations to those of you on decisions and good luck to those who are wading through visit days!

@biscuit4reggie I agree with @amominaz see what happens after you visit SCU. Maybe he will love it! We may be heading there for admitted student day as well! Pending decision that I so hope comes this week because this visit will take more planning than any other.

@Booajo I agree about SDSU. I was really surprised by how impressed I was after our recent tour. Rankings are not everything but it’s hard to figure out how to compare a nationally ranked school to a regionally ranked one. Also the weight one school’s degree might carry over another with prospective employers post-graduation. I find parent consensus where we live in SF bay area to be that we would be crazy to send S to SDSU over SCU. Obviously I will let him make his own decision as that’s likely the best determinant for success.

@adjaclaw Best of luck to you with SCU decision!

D just received a scholarship at U Victoria (Canada) that essentially covers tuition/fees. She has committed to McGill, but she’s really grateful to have that emergency back up. Things are getting desperate with public education here in OK, and teachers are scheduled to strike April 2. Even if schools don’t reopen for awhile, word is that seniors will still receive their diplomas on time. Still, no one knows how colleges will view this. :frowning:
