@biscuit4reggie if I listened to parent consensus where I live (affluent Houston suburb) I’d be convinced it is crazy to send my son to UT Dallas (his first choice by a mile) instead of UT Austin, Rice, or Texas A&M. You know what? We visited all four of those schools and he actively disliked Rice and TAMU, and he liked UT Austin for a while but not nearly as much as UTD. Fit is key.
Sympathy for the potential strike @ShrimpBurrito. Surely McGill wouldn’t penalize your D over it, especially if the seniors will graduate on time.
Woot! D18 was selected for UFE at Bama. Now she’s really going to have a difficult decision to make in April. I’m definitely leaning towards Bama now because she’ll get the research opportunities in RRS and the leadership opportunity in UFE. That’s a really nice combo, both during and after college.
@biscuit4reggie I agree with some of the other posts when I say see what happens on the visit. Both schools are good. I find some parents who haven’t really been looking at colleges lately or at least not the same ones that I am have a dated view of the schools. I am in CA, so I know what you are saying about the comments though.
Be proud that he has great options. I have been surprised and sad to see some of the really good kids in CA being waitlisted or rejected to their state CSU or UC. Way too many kids for the slots available.
@lovespink It is intense over on the Cal Poly SLO thread! I agree it is a terrible thing that our CA public colleges have to turn away so many high-stat applicants. Especially those that don’t have any other option due to income constraints. I am very grateful S has wonderful options and absolutely agree that parent opinions of some CA schools are out of touch.
@biscuit4reggie My D is seriously looking at SDSU. It certainly isn’t the SDSU of my youth! The only thing I’m leery of is difficulty getting classes there – a kid I know goes there and is contemplating taking Bio and Anatomy at a community college because he can’t get the class.
@SC Anteater SDSU has come a long way hasn’t it, lol. I know some very successful SDSU alumni that had to rely on cc classes to graduate in 4 years decades ago and it wasn’t a huge detriment. S attends a large-ish public hs and I think he would prefer a large and diverse public college to a small, private college.
Both my husband and I went to SDSU. It has definitely changed, and is hard to get into these days. A friend’s daughter goes there for speech pathology and has been able to get all of her classes and will graduate on time.
@biscuit4reggie I grew up in San Diego and attended SDSU. There are so many alumnis in San Diego of SDSU that he can’t go wrong. Many of my daughters classmates are going there and they absolutely love it. It’s got the whole package.
Letter from Ole Miss CME in the mail today. DS is working closing shift at work so won’t be home till close to midnight. :((
@TexasMom18 Hold it up to the light. You might accidentally see some key words.
Congrats to all on those with acceptances and good luck to those still waiting. I have a question. My DD has received two likely letters. She’s already received an EA acceptance however, we need to work out financial aid. If you receive a likely letter, is it cool to ask those schools to give us the financial aid package? Or do we have to wait until all admissions decisions are out? I guess I could call and ask but I really trust the wisdom of this supportive group.
@ShrimpBurrito Text her and ask her if you can open in!
“Hold it up to the light. You might accidentally see some key words.”
=))
I love you guys!
@ShrimpBurrito LOL. I tried. I can only see the date and letterhead.
@TexasMom18 I bet it’s good news! My D got a letter today from Ole Miss informing her of an additional $3000 x 4 years. We were hoping for one of the $8000 x 4 years through Honors College or some of the other institutional scholarships, but $12,000 over 4 years definitely put Ole Miss back into top contention with her in-state option. Fingers crossed for you!
Congrats @droppedit !
I thought that RRSP or UFE was an either or situation. Are you saying there are students in both? That would be remarkable.
Congrats, @droppedit on the UFE and RRS wins! I remember Amanda on the UFE campus tour mentioning that there are only 1 or 2 folks per year who do both, since it is challenging. Your DD may be the Amanda for the 2022 cohort! btw, is that Petra in your avatar? If not, where is it?
S is at Disneyland today for dance and acting workshops and a few rides before they come home. I know several of you have mentioned last track meet, last dance recital, etc., and this is a “last Disneyland” for him.
@TexasMom18 : Holding it up t0 the light is cool, but steaming it open and re-sealing is not cool!
Let is know. :))
