Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Today my D ran the data on all of the college mail she has accrued over the last few years. She’s a high stat NMF in Oklahoma. She received the most mail from, in order:

Case Western
U Chicago
WashU (visited)
OU: mostly handwritten communications, mostly regarding NMF
Pitt (visited)
Washington and Lee
ASU (visited twice, applied, accepted)
USC (visited, applied, accepted)
Tulane (visited twice)
U Tulsa

The school she will attend did not send her any mail–not even her acceptance letter.

Make of this what you will!

Any SDSU parents have any suggestions on how to learn more about the residential living communities for housing? There’s not much on the SDSU website and S18 is trying to decide which is the best fit. He’s a business major.

What a ride! D18 is our oldest and so that makes her the first of our kids to go through this process. It’s winding down here, but with three admit days in the next two weeks, I feel incredibly grateful for so many reasons. Which brings me here to ask two questions: Did your kid take gifts to their host students or anyone else on campus? Did you give gifts to counselors and those that wrote letters of rec? <:-P

@biscuit4reggie I think some of the SDSU living communities have their own CC pages. I also learned more about them at a presentation they held at a local hotel for admitted students. Sixth, for example, is named that because it is the newest school. At some point it will get another name. You can also eat at any dining hall, not just the ones associated with your community. It’s also very hard to switch, we asked.

Sixth is UCSD, not SDSU.

We did not bring gifts to host students. Both kids gave small gifts (chocolates, teas, etc.) for counselors and recommenders that we brought back from Europe. DH suggested some of the Belgian beer we hauled back but I thought bringing alcohol to school wouldn’t be such a good idea.

Ha, that is right! Sorry, just back from a week of college tours and must be more tired than I thought.

@Meddy We gave my son’s counselor a Starbucks gift card. She was on top of recommendation letters, transcripts, etc which made my life less stressful.

@lovespink they do all run together!

@Meddy My S brought a tshirt for his host at a scholarship interview visit, and cookies for his host and suitemates. He had a bunch of keychains, and he said he gave them to other scholarship finalists. For his teacher recommenders, he brought back chocolates.
@twinsmama I hope you get good feedback when you contact colleges about the new financial situation. Also sending prayers to you and your husband for his speedy recovery.

@TexasMom18 , my two older children made NMF, and we are aiming for S22 to make it as well. We will likely follow the same script. We make sure he is reading for pleasure, even if it is fantasy genre all the time. Any reading is good. He already gets good writing experience in his school curriculum. We will monitor his early HS testing such as PLAN and PSAT in 9th and 10th grades, to see where is deficiencies lie. No matter his prior scores, in late summer/early fall of 11th, he will take a PSAT/SAT practice course in the area. He will also takes LOTS of practice PSAT tests.

Does anyone have any experience with CLEP (specifically American Gov or Econ)? DD is debating taking them as she did not take AP US Gov/Econ because she did them as summer classes.

@twinsmama , I hope your husband recovers quickly!

“It’s Unofficial!”

We had a relatively subdued “decision day” conversation. Despite having already paid for the enrollment deposit, and despite paying for the housing deposit, and despite updating the “School of Choice” in the National Merit portal, fireworks were not shot and confetti did not fall. A t-shirt was worn, I suppose.

In the end(?), the compelling financial offer of full tuition and full board plus stipends was too much to look past. A fifth year of free tuition is more than icing on the cake. I think DP Jr will find some wonderful opportunities at Alabama, and hopefully graduating “debt free” will be a wonderful way to start his professional life.

Although happy to have this step done, there are plenty of “To Dos”. There is some consternation about finding a room mate for the selection process at this late stage. There is still some hope related to Honors type program involvement. Logistical planning needs to happen in earnest. It will be a busy April and May.

@labegg I have just recently looked at CLEP because the school my S will attend gives college credit for some of the exams.

I’d say it might be worth it for your D to take those CLEP exams.

@DavidPuddy congrats on your son’s decision. I hope he will love Bama as much as I have heard others do.

Congratulations, @DavidPuddy !

@DavidPuddy as long as your son learns to say “Roll Tide ya’ll” he will do just fine! My hubby and his brother are Bama Alum. DD had no interest. She applied as her financial safety but it just wasn’t her school. Too bad because the campus is beautiful. We have a good friend who is probably headed there too.

congrats @DavidPuddy
You are way ahead of us.
How did you convince your son that you needed a “decision day” ahead of the May 1 deadline? Mine is in serious foot-dragging mode.

@twinsmama Prayers and good thoughts for a speedy recovery for your DH as well as an economical solution for the sub driver in interim.

@DavidPuddy Debt free is really hard to turn down, best wishes and I too hope Alabama exceeds all expectations.
