Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Oh man, both you AND your S have your stuff way more together than we do here, @DiotimaDM! You are making me nervous.

I’m just hoping D can pull herself over the finish line. Senioritis is strong with this one.

We’ve been slowly knocking things off the college to do list too. Because of DS’s summer program he moves into the dorms on June 3rd! We still don’t have roommate assignment yet but they said they are going to try to make the assignments so he has the same roommates for both the summer and next year and since he’ll only have 10 days between the end of the summer program and the Fall move in, they don’t have to move out of the dorms after the summer program.

We went to BB&B and two Targets this weekend to look at bedding. He settled on a solid light grey comoferter with solid grey sheets. The desk chair he is taking is white with black trim, I’m going to have to figure out how to get an accent color in there!

Between hand-me-downs from his sister from when she was in the dorm and this weekend’s shopping he at least has the basics. We plan an Ikea run in a few weeks (after he get his roommate assignment) and we’ll do another Target trip the day he moves into the dorms. The only big item on the list is a dorm fridg and I hope one of the two other roommates will bring that or the 3 agree to rent one.

I’m SO ready to start working through the checklist of dorm things for my daughter. Unfortunately, we need to wait and see if gets into the dorms at her school. While Freshman are required to live on campus, they can only do so if there is enough space, and apparently waitlists for housing are not uncommon. We should know soon and then we can start shopping!

Since she’s going to school far away, we’ll likely order from stores like BBB and Target and have them shipped to the stores nearest campus for pickup. If shipping directly to campus is an option, we may do that. I’m worried that if we wait and shop when we get there the day before move in, there will be a thousand other kids doing the same and we won’t get what we need!

We haven’t started shopping for dorm supplies yet since DD wants to coordinate with her roommate. I guess I should remind her they should start thinking about it soon since they have both asked to be roommates and usually dual requests are honored since they live in the scholars dorm for their program. S16 didn’t care what his bedding and towels looked like, so we ordered a complete set from one of the companies that sells dorm supplies. It was a good deal, but the sheets seemed uncomfortable to me so I think I’ll have D18 pick from target, Kohls, or BB&B.

Prom is next up, along with two awards events we weren’t expecting but are excited to attend for her. Lots of fun events before AP exams… So little studying taking place for those. In hind sight, I’m wishing maybe we didn’t pay for her to take so many APs since she isn’t preparing nearly as much as she did for them in sophomore and junior years. Anyone have a senior who is actively studying for AP exams right now?

Do boys coordinate with their roommates??? I’d love to start knocking things off the college shopping list!

Can’t start dorm shopping untill her room is selected because some rooms are full beds, some twin xl and some just a twin. She is ready to shop!

My DD is still undecided between her final two choices although she told me mid week that she was leaning towards one. Her thoughts on each seemed quite reasonable to me. HS is still busy and stressful as well AND she’s away right now on a 4 day weekend away with the music department.

@DiotimaDM, my DD did her EMT-B last summer. It’s a pretty intense program. She doesn’t use it for employment but volunteers on our town squad. Both of her school choices have a student-run EMS program at school. She’s anticipating it to be a great way to meet friends and give back at school. Good luck to your son.

Boys do not coordinate bedding at least none that I know of…

Thank you, @WWC4me. S’s school offers a major in Emergency Medical Services, and it includes paramedic certification. He’s looking at a double major in that and threatre.

No decision, but down to 3 choices. Thought process seems good—favorite school is sadly most expensive, so he’s debating cost vs program

@lifegarding, with regard to studying for AP exams, I will repeat: the senioritis is strong with this one.

UTD makes it easy on the dorms. All freshman live in a triple with private bedrooms, each has their own sink but they share a shower, toilet and living area. All beds are twin extra long.

@Meddy Same here. Down to two really good choices. I had hoped to be making a deposit today, but alas, we are not there yet. I will be so happy when the deposit is made, and APs are in the rear view mirror. 6 APs this year, but only 5 exams. Then we can take a breather.

@havenoidea As a Lafayette graduate, lawyer and a moot court competition judge for a few years at Lafayette hosted competitions, I can tell you it is a great place, Small classes which only professors teach. Great access to the professors outside of class as well with lots of office hours. You get a classic liberal arts education at a school that also has great engineering. Obviously I’m a big fan.

S16 did connect through Facebook to find a roommate, but the only coordinating they did afterwards was to see who would rent the microfridge and who would bring a printer

We have purchased items that do not require D and her roommate to coordinate. Today we purchased pillows, pillow protectors, grey towels, hand towels and washcloths, Tide pods, Bounce, Q-Tips. I had already bought mattress topper. She found comforters she likes but waiting to discuss with future roommate. We are down to 1 school and on the waitlist at another. Holding out until the last minute and will accept on Saturday. She is willing to stay on the waitlist for several weeks past May 1.

Just got Back from Colorado Springs, CO! Done deal - DD accepted her appointment in the Air Force Academy’s Class of 2022. No dorm room shopping, everything is standard issue. Hopeful she looks good in blue!

Long weekend of studying for my D, but I’m so happy that she’s finally caught up! ECs and other commitments caused her to miss about half the school days this month. Can I say how happy I am that they are over?

@glido Congratulations!!! That’s a big deal to make that kind of commitment. Good for her!

Well, this part of my son’s journey has come to an end earlier than I expected because I was anticipating an April 30th scramble, based on past experience! He committed to UCLA. This board and site have been a huge source of information for us. With his large public high school’s limited resources, I really can’t imagine having navigated the application process without all of the guidance and wisdom of the people on College Confidential (despite hiring a private counselor for a while).

I hope I will be able to return the favor to future parents down the road as my younger child goes through this process. I wish all of you and your children the best. Congrats to all!
