Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

Just do a tick check! Mine came home with abullaeye and needed 3 weeks of antibiotics

Some of our teachers do extra AP session reviews. I think its great. They are taking their own time to do these. Last year one teacher held what I thought were an excessive number of physics review sessions for the AP exam, but the sessions were optional and the kids did uniformly well on both the AP and SAT2 test. Its hard to argue with results of 5s on the APs and 800s on the SAT2s. Plus, they really know the material so well. I felt bad for my son while he was going through it, but I still admire the teacher for offering the review sessions.
DS has 3 AP exams between today and tomorrow. I think he will be a much happier camper when they are over. For at least 5 minutes - before DH and I sit him down and discuss OUR plans for his no-plan summer

Just back from older D’s college graduation from Temple. Wow, it’s all worth it! One more to go.

I wish D2018 could have gone with us - I think she would have found it inspiring and exciting - but she had to stay behind for 2 AP tests. The only thing between her and graduation now is building a boat in Physics class that will get her across the school swimming pool. I think I’ll try to be there to watch that!

Graduation party was yesterday! All went smoothly. We had family, friends, classmates, teachers, mentors, and a swim coach over to our house for cake and fun activities. We splurged on renting a photo booth, and I’m so glad we did. D got fun photos with each of her guests. She can make a nice scrapbook or photo album from it.

One biggie down, another tonight with graduation.

Woot! just found out that our school’s Project Graduation group (all night lock in party after graduation) raised more money than needed so will be refunding each student that attends $100 of their $145 fee and that they’ll be giving away many “high value” prizes so students are urged to bring their SS# with them.

DD’18 graduated Saturday (sniff, sniff). So fun to watch all the classmates cheer and hug and sing the alma mater together one last time. I am about graduation-partied out! Gonna hop on a plane Thursday for DS’14’s college graduation this weekend. (Then I am going to take a serious nap!)

DS graduation party was Saturday. Fun was had by all and the weather turned out beautiful, although a little warm. Had a good turnout with about 50 people. We overbought on food but most can be frozen so it’s not a loss. And I’ll probably need easy meals the next couple of weeks!

We have a few weeks until graduation, but S18’s prom is next weekend. Can’t wait to see him in a tux again!

For Calc BC, he is getting a ton of additional homework and practice tests. Seems a little over the top, esp. since he has other AP tests right now.

For those who don’t have a grad night hosted by the school, what are your kids doing that night? We don’t have one at our high school this year for some reason.

Unrelated question - does anyone know how to change their contact email here at CC? I asked a mod and got no response

@SnowflakeDogMom , I would like to know too!

Georgetown letter arrived today, informing S that they are not taking any students off the waitlist. It was an incredibly competitive year and apparently all those who were admitted matriculated. So UGA is now final. The long wait that began last fall is finally over!

Congratulations @Nomorelurker !

Last week of school for the local system and for S18. He takes AP Calculus AB tomorrow and then is finally done, although he won’t officially be free until Friday (the end date I put for the annual homeschool contract.). I’ll consider him graduated then.

My youngest has done so well at the new school. Can’t believe 1st grade will be over too!

@lovespink at our school I think different kids are going to have different parties. IMO that’s such a shame. Our class has always been fragmented and will continue to be so. it will be interesting to see what their 10 year reunion looks like.

AP bio today and then AP microeconomics Wednesday and then AP macroeconomics Friday.

Fortunately tomorrow she has off for PA primary Election Day.

Still has classes till June 8 and graduation on June 15. So jealous of you folks who are already done.

Congrats to the graduates! Congrats to parents who survived graduation and grad parties! <:-P DS’s school doesn’t have a grad night event, so I guess I should ask him about his plans for that night. He may join friends or go out with GF, who will be leaving for a summer program the next morning and so won’t be at his party the next day.
@burghdad I feel your pain; DS still has another 1-1/2 weeks of school and won’t graduate til June 9. Part of me wants the graduation madness to be over – but then I realize it means he will be LEAVING FOR COLLEGE! Waaaaaah!
He still has AP Statistics and a couple of late homework assignments to turn in. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, DS is working on his grad cap. 8-|

@lovespink, our school is similar to @melvin123’s school - different kids going to different parties and a class that has never been very cohesive (since elementary school), in contrast to my younger son’s class at the same school(s). I wish it were different! My son hasn’t decided what he will be doing yet.

Prom was this past weekend, two more AP tests this week, and then 3 weeks until graduation - I don’t know that the school is going to be very successful at keeping the kids in class.

@nomorelurker mentioned that Georgetown didn’t take anyone off the waitlist . . . I saw in George Washington’s student paper/email that they didn’t, either. I am mildly curious about NYU because they waitlisted soooo many students.

@pickledginger, I read somewhere that the election last year (for better or worse) galvanized more students to want to get involved in the political process and go to school in D.C. Georgetown had record low acceptance this year at 14%. It makes sense to me that GW also had many applications and no waitlist. S was also waitlisted at WUSTL (15% acceptance this year) but was only interested if he had gotten in RD.

I was not aware that NYU had a big waitlist but generally, with the common app leading to record numbers of applications, many students trophy hunting, and it becoming so competitive to gain admission to the top 25, schools that are ranked in the top 40 are also seeing record low acceptance rates. By example, S was admitted early action to Tulane, which I believe had a record low 17% admission. Tulane was a high match for S but I suspect it will be a reach for many strong students next year. USC (Southern Cal) this year also had a record low 13% admission this year. I just looked up NYU and they also had record low admission this year, dropping from 28% last year to 19% this year!

@burghdad, S also not done yet. AP tests this week in Calc and Econ. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel and Friday can’t come soon enough.

@melvin123, I think there were three parties last weekend. S attended only one due to the AP tests still on his plate this week, and there are something like five parties this weekend and more next weekend. It seem excessive, especially to have parties scheduled BEFORE AP tests and graduation, but maybe I’m just getting old? I can see having a couple of parties after classes and AP tests are finished and maybe a few after graduation, but I don’t really get the ones before! As far as a ten year reunion, I doubt my S would have much interest, but you never know. I attended mine but did not go to the 20 :-).

@Nomorelurker I wish we could have hosted D’s graduation party later, after APs and graduation, but it was just impossible for us logistically. As busy as all of these kids are, I’ll bet many times the party date is chosen because it’s the only possible time.

Stats, Macro, Latin, BC Calc still to take. I think Gov was last week?

Because finals are distinct from the AP tests, DP Jr. is as stressed about tests as I have ever seen him this week.
