Parents of the HS Class of 2018 (Part 1)

S concurs that AP Cal was a butt-kicker. May the odds be every in their favor when scores come out!

My kid said the Calc BC multiple choice was easy but the FRQ was hard. He said yesterday’s Physics was much harder than he expected.

Count us in as well for AP Calc (AB) being very hard - MC section fine, FRQ’s very hard. We will take a 3 all day long on this one. They say they don’t curve but let’s hope they make some adjustments on this one

Report from my daughter regarding Calc AB… she also thought the MC section was fine but the FRQs difficult. Didn’t help that her calculator’s graphing function went kaput in the middle of the test. Talk about bad timing. She even installed new batteries this morning!

My D can’t remember well enough. She went straight from 1 AP exam into another. Literally the first one ended at 12:03 and the second one started at 12:00. She had the same issue last year. What is college board thinking, not giving them at least 20 mins between tests so they can scarf down a brown-bag sandwich?

@melvin123 Or give the kids an option to take the second test on a different day.

@ShrimpBurrito do they have that choice?

I heard recently of a student who tried to reschedule a test when two were on the same day (one morning, one afternoon) and College Board would not allow it.

S says Calc BC was pretty hard, but French was harder.

No doubt French was hard, immediately after a four hour long Calc test!

My kids took Calc (AB for one BC the other) and French AP’s today also.
They were beat.
Up to the FRQs they said it was challenging but doable for Calculus.
And French…multiple conversations at the same time plus background noise…
They are very glad it’s over.

They all had the same problem too, didn’t they? No time to have lunch. No wonder why the poor kids are exhausted.

Ouch. Fender bender – her first accident-- yesterday after she dropped her sister off at a lacrosse game. No really big deal-- she’s fine, and the other driver (an adult) didn’t even request to see her info. Both old cars suffered merely a few paint dings, no big deal. But she rear ended him in rush hour traffic, and felt terrible. I was grading finals, and was so glad I checked my phone to see how things were going at home. She was crying her heart out at the thought that she could have really hurt someone. So I packed up my exams and was home 20 minutes later.

Her car was a little sluggish when I got home; not sure it will get her to school today so I may just drop the girls off. Heavy storms were approaching, and it was almost 5 pm-- just not a good time to take a chance on getting stuck with the car enroute to the mechanics.

We’re hoping it was that wakeup call that all new drivers need: that they need to watch their speed and not get distracted as they drive. Thankfully, it was a minor wakeup from our end; pretty significant from hers.

@bjkmom glad all is well. Old cars can be a blessing. It’s a good lesson. I’ll never forget the first car I rear ended - a town car/taxi luckily with no passengers!

The one thing that made her laugh was this: One of my newer friends at work has a son who is also a senior at a different high school. Our two kids have never met, but they share a number of characteristics-- so so students, anxiety issues, picky eaters, the list goes on and on.

He had his first accident-- also rear ended someone-- on Monday. Also not a bad accident, though his car will really need some work.

But we keep saying that our two kids are the same person-- the coincidence was kind of bizarre.

@bjkmom glad she’s ok.
That’s wild about your friends son!

My S felt so strange yesterday after he was done with AP Calculus. He had nothing left to study for. Nothing to prep for, or review. Homeschool ends Friday but his online finals are done. He said it’s a weird feeling to be done.

@bjkmom , one of my coworker’s son, on his first day driving a car to school, backed into a teacher’s car as he left the school parking lot. The teacher was very kind, but the poor kid was so traumatized he refused to drive again for a month. He got over it though. Agree, good lessons for all concerned.

@apraxiamom My S feels this way, too. For him, it’s a good thing because he is just done* with HS, fork and all. He has a punchlist for his upcoming EMT class to work on, but it’s all things like malpractice insurance, a background check and drug test, etc. Nothing academic.

He’s ready for a brain break.

He’s petitioned his HS to name the school’s theater, or at least the stage, after his drama teacher, who opened the school when it was new and is retiring at the end of the year. That will go to the school board soon. The teacher doesn’t know, so it will be a sweet surprise if it goes through.

  • Not done as in he hated every minute of it, but ready to move up and on to the next thing. He feels like he's just marking time at school now.

@bjkmom Glad she is ok and damage was minor.

We had a good awards night. S was delighted to receive an award for musical excellence and several local scholarships.
