Congrats to everyone on their acceptances!!!
D got her 3rd acceptance on Friday. It came as a surprise since we sent in the application on the 1st. It was a really quick turnaround. She is very happy. We only have the UC apps left to submit.

@cinn124
Awesome!
@JBSeattle S wanted a large school and a very urban location. He really liked Temple when we visited. His primary interests are political science and history so Drexel didnât seem to fit. His stats were 1220 SAT, 3.17 uwgpa, 3.73wgpa. As far as I know he got no merit. We arenât really expecting any. Iâm just happy he was accepted.
Congrats @me29034
@TwinMom2023 I loved Elon but I think it is fading on D19 list. I keep hoping she goes for a smaller school and I loved the campus but she seems to be leaning towards larger schools and more of an urban campus. Plenty of time to change her mind ten more times between now and May 1.
@DCNatFan Elon is definitely not urban. LoL Elon is the largest on the twinsâ list, I think.
I believe kids wind up where they are meant to. Husband thinks that is the dumbest theory ever. Heâs a little too practical.
My kids bought hats from Schools that made the applicarion list, if touring was prior to application.
Waited for sweatshirts until enrollment deposit made.
Congratulations on Ithaca! That was on my S17âs list. For those looking for merit there if it helps my S was also offered 17k merit (3.47 UW/25 ACT superscore.
Ithaca had a portal change for several days before the packet arrived, no email.
UVM was an email first, portal changed a couple of hours before the email but same day. Merit showed on the portal. Packet was a week laterâŠmail takes a while to get here from Vermont! EA has 2 release dates though unless things have changed.
@me29034 - Congrats! Our HS sends quite a few students to Temple and they all seem very happy.
Congrats @me29034 and @cinn124!!
My son applied to Temple through rolling admissions and I am in portal checking mode even though I know that they will probably finish the EA apps first and he probably wonât hear anything until after he auditions in mid-Feb. anyway. Iâm a little worried that all the merit funds will be gone if they donât review him for admission until then and then off the list it will come. Most schools donât explain this two-step process very well.
Thanks for sharing your sonâs scholarship info for Ithaca, @eandesmom. Iâm impressed with your historical portal and and mail knowledge, haha. My sonâs estimated merit aid is . . . $17K! Itâs looking that thatâs the typical award once you hit a certain threshold and higher scores/grades donât make much difference (he has a high ACT score and I put his weighted GPA into the NPC).
@kathyrain My S19, only applied to ONE school! Weâve been to 5-6, but none excited him like Alabama did. Alabama was his top choice since the beginning, and he didnât change his mind, he loved Alabama that much. He applied in July, got his acceptance, we paid the enrollment deposit, and then the housing deposit. S and husband are actually in Alabama now for University Days (we had to reschedule the October trip we were going to make), and this is his second visit.
Iâve had a very uneasy feeling about him not applying anywhere else, but I figure if something changes, he can apply to our state schools or even junior college.
Good luck.
Question: Twin A submitted ED on 11/1 for deadline of 11/15. Her interview from Oct. is still a red X. I reached out initially b/c with dual enrollment grading issues, it was very confusing and the GC had to call and send packet twice. It was a really a challenge and I had to decipher. That email chain finally whittled down to just the interview. The AO found the interviewer who may not have logged interview last week and she said she had everything straight now including the interviewâwhich is still a red x on the portal. I donât want to be the most annoying person in the world, however, this has not been a smooth process.Twin A could step in at this point since this is straight forward [the midterm stuff was insane]. What do you think? Wait until Wednesday? Have Twin A reach out to someone else?
Congrats @me29034 to you and your son!!!
@eh1234 FWIW, I entered Dâs uwGPA and single ACT score into Ithacaâs NPC and got $17k. When I entered her wGPA and superscored ACT, it actually said $20k. Even though the college takes superscores and the wGPA is what our high school puts on the transcript, I would be conservative with the estimates.
@Acersaccharum Thatâs good to know. They must be looking for a 4.0 with a really high ACT for the $20K scholarship. His weighted GPA misses by .006. I should go back and put in his unweighted to make sure it still comes out at $17K. (Our school just puts the weighted on the transcript).
I have to say I enjoy this thread more that the regular 2019 one, and even though my S19âs stats donât fit neatly into the parameters. He has his own challengesâŠ
I just ran the Ithaca NPC for fun even though kid wonât apply as they donât have engineering. It came out as $30k. I donât know his unweighted gpa so I guessed at 3.80 and his ACT is a 34.
@eh1234 and @Acersaccharum Ithaca awards merit by the program as well. I would not at all assume that itâs only a stats number. A close friend of S17âs was awarded 15 and he had higher stats across the board. He was admitted to Park which is more competitive and I suspect the reason for the lower amount, versus my S in Environmental Science.
YMMV.
Question for the experienced parents that are dealing with how-to-pay issues â did you do some sort of cost of college over four years (please! not five or more) factoring in tuition increases for schools that historically have them, tuition locks for schools that have them, etc? D has acceptances at some schools where there is a guaranteed tuition commitment, so it seems like it would make sense to approximate the cost over four years (at least for the direct costs) to use to compare schools/offers.
Or am I reading too much into this?
@OrangeFish
I think you make a good point. I consider past/possible cost increases as a factor. It is hard to budget precisely for many schools but having the tuition guarantee makes budgeting easy. My daughterâs list has a variety of different costs per year so in a case where the difference is $10k per year the guarantee holds little water.
You raise a good point @JBSeattle that wide tuition $ differences plus merit on top of it could make it accounting madness.
@OrangeFish Yes, I did. Originally before acceptance I assume a 4% increase YOY and see how that maps out, I map it out 2 ways, one without any merit and one with expected merit if there is any. Ok I might alwso do best/worst case scenarios lol. After acceptance and merit I adjust accordingly and also research historic increases.
Tuition garuntees arenât typcially inclusive of room and board, and those costs may change if the student moves off campus etc. Off campus isnât always cheaper and often means a full year of rent depending on the location so I factor that in as well as the possibility of having to buy furniture etc.
I also start to look at what the school offers for payment plans, if they do. For the amounts I cash fund I prefer to spread it out over the semester versus lump sum.
I would encourage everyone to make sure you account for year one costs as the initial dorm set up can add up. Much of it is a one time cost though. If your kid goes to school on the other side of the country, that aspect maycost more than if you can give them a bunch of stuff from home as shipping costs may make it cost prohibitive.
