Parents of the HS Class of 2019 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

What do you need guidance on, @2019hope ? That looks like a good list of schools, with 3 acceptances already! One that she really likes! Are you looking for more? What does she think?

@ninakatarina I think I’m looking for a “good” business school, not “great”. ( if she’s truly undecided When deposit time arrives, i’d Prefer she go to Tx State for less than 15k a year)

Kiddo is rolling her eyes. Since the gates have opened up for out of state - she’s intrigued but ready to be done and get us off her back. I suspect she’d like to go somewhere with a cold winter and real seasons. That would be a novelty for her. ( Houston kid) It would also help if the campus is “cute”.

P.s. IPads are hard!

Personality wise, the 2nd list is all over the board with some religious/conservative common themes.

I would say there are other solid business schools out there that have flexiblity that might cost less and seem to fit the theme (Seattle University, Gonzaga, UC Boulder). I’m not at all familiar with Texas but up here (Seattle) Pepperdine isn’t one that jumps to mind for business or any one major especially, it is popular for location and personality and overall viewed as solid though pricey. She is in the range for Indiana and that’s a solid option.

At our HS a 91 would be approximately a 3.6 UW and a 96 would be a 4.0. We do not weight though so I am not sure what that scale would be.

@eandesmom Hubby yesterday. “ Ew, Pepperdine makes you take 3 religious classes. We shouldn’t hype it up to her”. So, there is NO theme or reasoning behind any of this. ?.

UC Boulder was one of my choices - we should look at that again. I’ll look into Seattle and Gonzaga as well. I thought they were super selective?

Before she quit, the counselor had suggested Mizzou
my DD has never been encouraged to look out of state until now

@2019hope
Yes, Ohio Wesleyan has a good business school. They just added a few majors in 2016.

I agree with Eandesmom about Pepperdine unless you are affiliated with Church of Christ. The views are beautiful though! Also Gonzaga would be a good choice if she is not enamored by big cities.
Also a lot depends on your financial situation.

Our situation is that I have given my D a $27k per year budget which can be supplemented by work (estimated at $10k max, she may use this for spending money at school in part which would be $ I don’t need to spend). If a school wants over $40k a year then the answer is going to be no. My D seems ok with this, she does not want debt and my Wife is adamantly against any undergrad debt.

@2019hope There are Jesuit schools in the Northeast with very respected business programs that are great options for this thread’s kids. Saint Joesph’s, University of Scranton, and Loyola Maryland would be worth considering. All three offer merit. And she would definitely get cold weather and real seasons. Oh, and she could easily change majors. :slight_smile:

John Carroll and Xavier are in Ohio. Might be worth a look too.

@InfiniteWaves
Burrr!!!

What about schools in the north east? Fairfield in CT - Catholic. I’m trying to think of who is good with aid.There are so many along the Hudson heading north of NYC and it seems like TX would give a geographical advantage.

Quick question, Church of Christ =/ Catholic Church. correct? Jesuit = Catholic or Episcopalian?

Jesuits are a branch of Catholicism.
I think Church of Christ=Evangelical but know it is definitely not Catholic.

Pepperdine is kind of a weird mix of religion, wealth and LA cool vibe. Interesting place. My D and I did like it better than LMU which seemed like a huge state school with a $70k price tag albeit their church is wonderful/beautiful!

Ah. Evangelical, good to know!

Tabulating recommendations here so I don’t loose them - all business schools

Seattle U
Gonzaga
UC Boulder - I love it there. Hubby thinks it’s a Party school. DD is just “wth guys?”
U of Scranton
Loyola Maryland
St Joseph
Xavier, Ohio
Fairfield Ct
Missouri. - don t remember why counselor recommended it
Ohio Wesleyan

@milgymfam the families I know that have homeschooled have often had kids that were younger for their grade when they started college and they ended up doing more regional schools /two year schools, etc to start out , and taking a few of the classes that they could online. Then once they turned 18 they transferred to 4 year. jut my two cents for D2.

If you have time to read up, the Jesuits are very interesting and they place a high value on education.
My D is interesting in that she has grown up Catholic but does not want to be confirmed. She is not opposed to Catholic/religious schools though. One of her choices is Point Loma which seems pretty strict to me. She said she wants to visit and see what it is really like if she gets in and price is reasonable (of course the fact that the campus is on the water and in San Diego doesn’t hurt ?).

I was raised Catholic, but we didn’t raise DD in any religion, other than she was baptized Catholic. She’s now very curious and feels she missed out. She might enjoy a school that wasn’t too in your face.

@2019hope Fordham is Jesuit and has a strong Business program. Nice campus located in a decent area of the Bronx. Generous with merit.

@kathyrain
Good suggestion. My D almost applied there.

@2019hope Check out St. Bonaventure! It definitely has a good business school. About an hour and a half south of Buffalo, NY, right near the PA border. Gorgeous campus!

@2019hope Jesuit schools in general are very open and accepting and focus on service to others more than religion per-se. It’s a wonderful environment. It has services for all available though the roots are in the catholic church. Theology classes are required (2 I think?) BUT they are pretty loose/liberal with how that is interpreted, many are ethics related and some pretty interesting options! You can look at the curriculum info to see.

Your D has stats well within range for Seattle U, would be a match mabye low reach at Gonzaga. Run the NPC’s, she should qualify for merit at SU, not sure about Gonzaga.

Yes, Boulder does have a party rep but I imagine some of the Texas schools on her list do as well. My opinion is it is up to the kid. That said, Boudler also has a lot of wealthy OOS kids with money to burn and it’s a pricey trendy/hipster town on its own, and that can contribute to the perception. It’s still a solid business school. I agree with the addition of Fordham, may be a bit of a reach but worth looking at. Definitely check on dates for all though as it is getting tight if not past on some.

CU Boulder
not UC Boulder
although some point out tongue-in-cheek that is should be UC Boulder given all the California kids that attend.

University of Scranton is another terrific Jesuit school.
