@2019hope
Yes, my D almost applied to Tulane and we went all the way down there to visit. We also visited Pepperdine and my D has just a so so feeling about it and did not apply there either. Tulane really feels big but lots of great opportunities.
My D is applying to USD. We have not visited the school but she has been to SD and loves it (hence why she also applied to Point Loma and SDSU!) Your daughter may want to consider Cal Poly.
University of Maine is an off the radar choice that is very reasonable for OOS with their flagship program. It is common app but deadline for flagship program is Dec 1!
@JBSeattle A 93 was a 4.0 which was just crazy to have that big of a swing. They have now changed the system but it was too late for D19.
@Momof3kidz Ugh!!! Really? I wonder if she should put a clarification note in her app. That conversion is really stinky.
Congrats on all of the latest acceptances!
@Momof3kidz My son is also the king of the 92 (and the 89), but they get him a 3.7 and a 3.3, respectively (plus .5 for honors and 1.0 for AP). What a harsh grading system your school has!
I finally got around to doing the FAFSA and the EFC it spit out looks all wrong so thereās something new to stress over. Is there really no way to review your application once you submit it? (In this case, it appears to be too low but I know that I entered the income correctly and there werenāt many other numbers - our savings/investments, etc. are really pathetic).
Anyway, weāll have two in college for one year and the EFC for S19 is about half of what I remember getting when I filled one out for D16 before her first year. However, my understanding is that it doesnāt work like that (where they just split it in half for each college kid).
Iām glad to see Iām not the only one wondering wth with the GPA conversions. It seems I was wrong on her conversion. I got a 3.84 as her weighted GPA from a 96% weighted (91%uw) The school gave her a 3.56 in Naviance - so that isnāt as rosy an outlook. Sheās got a 1340/1350 SAT.
The sudden switch to OOS schools means weāre unprepared. Is there any where else we should look? RD ?
@JBSeattle Just saw your post! Read first, post 2nd!
Cal Poly? U of Maine - thatās certainly a new one!
Yeah, you need to hurry for both of those @2019hope
Cal Polyās RD app is due by Nov 30th.
Another cool thing about Univ of Maine is it is possible to obtain a BA and MBA in 5 years (at just $25k a year Ish depending on your state and that gpa etc meets minimum). I tried to get my D to apply but she thinks it would be boring and she is not that into lobster. I donāt get why she applied to Vermont as I donāt really see it as being superior to Maine and will probably be more costly, likely over budget even. I guess her thought is that she would prefer Western Washington over Maine (and it would be a bit cheaper than Maine as it is a reasonable in state choice).
Another great option could be Ohio Wesleyan. I kind of made my daughter apply there because of a $30k auto scholarship for 3.4 with 1150 sat (she barely makes it). It is $56k a year or so but $30k is nice! Great LAC 30 minutes from Columbus. Enjoyed when I looked at colleges 25 plus years ago. Super nice people.
@2019hope a 3.84 W could certainly equal a 3.56 UW.
@JBSeattle it seems like our Ds college lists have a lot of overlap. Mine applied to UVM (currently holds #1standing) but not Univ of Maine because 70% UVM students are from out of state (like her). That percentage is flipped at Univ of Maine, with 70% in-state). Not sure itās a legitimate rationale, but it is hers. ? Her RD schools are Bates, Skidmore, St. Olaf, and Whitman.
@Turquoise52
Interesting. Whitman is a great school but āin the middle of nowhereā which is one of the reasons she wonāt apply to Maine. I donāt get how Vermont is not āmiddle of nowhereā.
Anywhere that is not near a big city=āmiddle of nowhereā per my daughter. I think Cal Poly is ok just because it is in California (great school to).
Can I ask a stupid question? What is an auto admit? Iāve never heard of that before.
When I think OOS, this isnāt the list in my mind, Definitely think of OOS publics, not privates. I donāt see any consistency/theme with these which makes a reccomendation hard.
Tulane EA -when did Tulane get so selective? I was shocked at the applicant scores
U San Diego
Pepperdine
Miami Ohio
Indiana Bloomington
SMU
Trinity U (Texas)
That said. If your D is undecided, I would strongly discourage Cal Poly. It is a wonderful school. It would be a high, possibly impossible reach at the stats youāve posted (it is not generally a school for this thread, no offense meant at all). More importantly it is very difficult if not impossible to change majors there and you must declare and be accepted to the major for admission. Core classes are early, followed by gen ed which can make a change of major or transfer to another school add time (and $$).
@milgymfam auto admit is when a school has rolling admissions says āif you have X GPA and Y SAT/ACT you will be accepted.ā No counselor or teacher recommendations required. The 2 schools my D applied to this way were Univ of Northern Arizona and Univ of Kansas because she wants to go somewhere cold, but Univ of Arizona and Arizona State also are auto admit schools. I think Univ of Alabama, too.
Thanks, @Turquoise52! So that applies to kids from any school nationwide, or just those in the state of the college? I wonder if it would also apply to homeschoolers?
@milgymfam For the Arizona public universities, the auto-admit process applies to OOS applicants as well. As an example, here are the regular admission requirements for ASU (scroll down toward the bottom of the page): https://admission.asu.edu/freshman/apply. Thereās a separate process for homeschooled applicants that Iām not very familiar with. https://admission.asu.edu/freshman/homeschool
@milgymfam - I think thereās a list of 10-15 schools for whom this applies instate or out of state. Some are instate only. As an example, if youāre a resident of Louisiana, with a certain GPA and SAT/ACT you will be admitted to Tulane. I think Texas has something similar for residents. But the auto admit stats for Tulane and UT are much higher than the 3.0-3.4 range for this thread. Iām not sure how the homeschooling fits in to this equation. If you use a specific homeschooling program, maybe the admins for that program would know?
Thanks! We donāt use a program, so Iām going it alone. Older D, my senior, has higher hopes (and an outside scholarship to boot) than younger D, my junior. Neither technically fit in here for GPA, but my younger D has a lower GPA than older D (due to the amount of DE courses older D has completed) and is just in general not as competitive for admission. She hasnāt tested yet, but older Dās score doesnāt match her stats otherwise and younger D has slow processing so isnāt likely to knock it out of the park either. I think itās unlikely that sheāll get what she wants in her college search, tbh, because itās very narrow in focus (in terms of geography and majors/minors) and we are low income. Luckily sheās got my husbandās whole GI Bill for where ever she does end up. I think since we are stuck in the waiting pattern for D1, Iāve ramped up my own stress level about D2. Honestly, even though sheās a junior, sheās only 14, so I doubt we will actually be making any applications in the fall at all. I completely at a loss on how to proceed with her. She started public school at four, and she skipped a grade in her public middle school⦠and here we are. Ha. Anyway, that was a hijack of epic proportions! Sorry!
Most of the colleges in the country are auto-admit (at least until they fill to their maximum capacity, that is).
The College Confidential bubble makes it easy to forget that the vast majority of colleges (or, put a different way, the colleges attended by the vast majority of college students) arenāt really terribly selective at all, and most of the selective colleges are actually only moderately so.
i am sorry for the very long post. Hereās kiddos stats. I could use some guidance!
91 UW/ 96 W. 3.56 according to Naviance. 1340/1350 Sat. Taking again on Sat. Business Major as of now. Was Physical Therapy a few months ago. The schools college counselor quit early Nov. - this is also the districts first year of 100 pt scale-Iām trying to find someone to tell me what her official weighted 4.0 scale gpa is.
@Momof3kidz 92=3.0. That seems brutal weāre on a 100 pt scale.
@JBSeattle Ohio Wesleyan! I hadnāt thought about that! ( how is the business school?) I didnāt know about the auto scholarship either. My parents live in Columbus- so weāre open to Ohio schools. Miami U was on the list for that reason, my sister went there
@eandesmom Our new 2nd list makes no sense. Iāll do my best because Iām really turned around ( DH put it together recently) and hope iāll get some insight from my own ramblings. Thereās plenty of family disconnect on display here. Bottom line, weāve decided to spend more than we had originally and a business major is back on the table.
2nd round of applications - early, mid Nov
Tulane - was my choice and a holdover from the 90ās when normal kids could get in. Has a good business school.
Miami of Ohio - good business school. Auto scholarships if apply befor Dec 1. Sister went there. Grandparents live in Columbus
Indiana Bloomington - hubbys choice. Great business school. He looked at the overall stats and assumed sheād get in
Trinity- hubby choice.
Pepperdine- hubby choice -
University of San Diego - hubby choice- he has some feel for the business school, likes the pictures,
SMU- my addition. Good business school. If weāre suddenly paying $$$$ the itās a choice based on her stats
1st round- end of Aug
UT Austin - applied liberal arts since DH is a crazy Longhorn and wanted to maximize her chances. ( Heād let her choose any major, any grad school if she could go there)
Texas A&M- good business school. Thought for sure sheād get the extra SAT she needed to get in auto admit.
Texas State - accepted and $5000/yr scholarship - she really likes it there
Texas Tech - accepted and $5000/yr scholarship
Stephen F Austin - accepted and $3000/yr scholarship
