Parents of the HS Class of 2019 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@JBSeattle Congrats on WWU! We know a lot of happy kids there!

Happy Thanksgiving to everybody! As I posted on another board, I am “thankful” for all of the wonderful advice and support on these boards. Have a wonderful day.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

DS19 just received his third acceptance, Winthrop University.

@carolinamom2boys Congrats on the great news.

Thanks @DCNatFan

Hey everyone. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

@eandesmom Thank you so much. That was a lot of work. Twins A will hopefully here from Hobart & William Smith by Dec. 15 (ED). We’ll see if notification comes out early. It’s so wonderful to see our progress and congratulations @JBSeattle!

Did y’all find college questions with the family were nerve racking? The first thing my dad said to Twin A was, “You can’t go to school way up there!!” Thanks Dad. Very helpful. Early decision is completely foreign to them. I don’t think anyone in my entire family has attended a private school. They are all a little baffled.

Anyway, we are in the countdown mode and hoping for good news and another LL Bean 25% off sale for winter clothes. LOL.

Wow, our group has only had admittances and no declines as of yet!

@JBSeattle that is the beauty of the early rounds.

@TwinMom2023 quick question (and you can pm me) is that data for both twins or just one? We can note them both on the doc easy enough. Same thing with noting RD versus ED etc.

@JBSeattle that is because generally in this group, the “list” is pretty reasonable. Noone is trying to get into lottery schools. My D17 applied to 7 schools . Ended up accepted to 3 early, then one Waitlist, then two acceptances and one high reach rejection . With S19 the list has 2 rolling safeties UAH and KSU), and his ED school so far. with his reach being GT, and an application for RD for RPI. His ED school was RIT. We wait for $ and hopefully will call it a day.

Now here is what is interesting. The Deposit for ED is due the day EA comes out for GT. The curiosity in me wants to know if he even had a shot at GT (and yes, he would still go to RIT over GT), and wants to play it down to the wire, but the pragmatic in me, just says, if the merit and FA is there for RIT we will just never know.

@sdl0625
I know but it is still fun to cheerlead!
Good point though.

My Daughter’s toughest schools admissions wise are the ones she has applied RD. I was pleased to hear her say she would be pretty happy going to anywhere she has applied (although she still needs to visit to know more for most of them). My plan is to visit 1 or two once she has been admitted and maybe we have an idea on the financial side.

@JBSeattle - My son said the same thing. He has two acceptances already (Xavier and Dayton), and said he will be happy at any of his schools. His list was reasonable so we are hoping for more good news in December. Just nice to finally hear him say all of his choices were good!

@eandesmom I just did Twin A. Only overlap school is Elon.

Kiddo has been accepted at Texas State, Texas Tech and Stephan F Austin! (She was auto admit for all of those). Hubby has taken over my job of cracking the whip - and now he has her applying to all kinds of OOS schools. I think he’s relinquished his dream of her at UT Austin and is trying to find an OOS equivalent. Money be damned. ?

@JBSeattle, with the exception of her “will only get in if lightning strikes twice in the same spot of the smallest crack in the ceiling of the admins office while her application is being reviewed” my daughter also applied to her toughest schools (lowest acceptance rates) RD. It’s not the best strategy, I fear, but like your D, she feels she will be happy at most of the schools on her list (the exceptions being the true “safeties” - the auto admits I encouraged her to apply to just to have a couple nods early in the game). It should make for a happy late fall/early winter, but all bets are off in Spring, I suppose.

@Turquoise52
Congrats on getting a few acceptances in even if they are auto admits!
Agreed that applying to tougher schools RD is not the best but unfortunately two of her tougher schools (Occidental and Univ of San Diego) are both ED or RD only. I think San Diego is 50/50 and Occidental maybe 33% shot (albeit I went there for whatever that is worth). The other issue is those 2 are the worst in terms of affordability not accounting for your lightning strike scenario! She also applied to Cal Poly (regular decision only) which is on the tougher side. Fortunately, with her working a little, that one is financially feasible without aid.

@2019hope
Congrats on the early admits. What is your daughter interested in? Size of school? Where else might she apply? Some of us might be able to give some good suggestions. Did she apply to UT and it is a long shot?

@JBSeattle she’s all over the map. Wanted to get a PT doctoral - but now feels maybe not. Was against a business degree but now ok with it. She doesn’t have a clue. UT Austin with a 20% class rank is off the table. I’m hoping for A&M.

Hubby’s OOS are all predicated on choosing business as a major. It’s very confusing for me, the schools that superscore and use weighted GPA’s are super reaches but possible in dreamland . Some include:

Tulane EA -when did Tulane get so selective? I was shocked at the applicant scores
U San Diego
Pepperdine
Miami Ohio
Indiana Bloomington
SMU
Trinity U (Texas)

I just converted her 100 pt GPA into the most generous 4.0 interpretation and it was much better than I thought. How can u know how a school converts?

@2019hope We has similar issues because D19’s school has a really wacky GPA calculation that changed her junior year to make things even messier. I was really worried because the change made her gpa lower than previous year students’ with similar grades. Some schools were very transparent on how they calculated a gpa and others were not. I was really stressed over it but her counselor assured us that the schools want to admit students and try to look at the whole application in the most positive light.

Our school counts a 92 even in an honors class as a 3.0 so schools that recalculated were top on her list for safety schools. Unfortunately, my daughter is the queen of 92’s.

@Momof3kidz
Crazy as a 92 should be at least a 3.2. When does it become a 4.0?
My D’s school gives grades as a pure decimal so one could get a grade of 3.37 as an example. Much better system but dumb in that they do not weight even AP grades which I think is the reason that they do not give a class rank.
