@dfbdfb I’m so relieved you and your family are safe, but that does not sound fun. At least with hurricanes we get plenty of warning. We have had the state legislature vote to override the 180 school day mandate when a hurricane damaged so many schools that they couldn’t spread the students out to a neighboring school.
i’m looking for a new hobby so if I can do anything for you and the fam, let me know.
@dtbdtb Glad that you are safe. So scary!
Happy to read all the acceptances so far. I think that we get nervous bc of the high stats kids in the regular forum, but I think our kids will do great.
We had our first acceptance Wednesday to Temple University. So happy to have one. Takes the pressure off. It is not my son’s top choice, but it is a good solid, choice that checks a lot of boxes.
Hoping that everyone starts to hear good news as we move into December decisions.
Thanks to those of you who commented about SLU especially @momtogkc for the alumna perspective. The 8.5 hr drive is not really the issue - we are used to long drives/road trips in our family. However, being so far removed from everything else might not be the best for him. He probably wouldn’t mind the cold, however, he’s not used to it being THAT cold and a much longer winter than we have here.
I actually prefer for him to be at a smaller school, as he is definitely the type of kid that is going to need to advocate for himself, seek extra help, etc, and I think he’d be more inclined to do that at a place where he feels like he is more than just a number. I did notice that on several places where I read about SLU, it was mentioned that they have a very strong alumni base. I do think that is very important to consider in terms of networking later on.
I’m not sure what he is going to do at this point - this next month is the busiest time for hearing from school that are still recruiting his position. SLU said their next official visit day isn’t until January, so that will give him some time to see what else might happen. He did look at Hobart a few weeks ago and really liked it. However, that is a bit closer to us and easier to fly home if necessary.
I appreciate all the insight! This whole recruiting thing is killing me - I wish he’d just have all his apps in and be in the waiting game now. It was so much easier when D17 applied - she had all her apps in by this time. Not only has he only done a handful, he hasn’t even finished visiting - and nearly ALL of the ones left that he’s interested in are way up north where visiting in the dead of winter will not be easy. I suppose it’s good to see it at its worst in terms of cold/snow but I don’t relish the thought of trying to travel there if a storm decides to come through at the same time.
Editing to add…we have terrible terrible postal delivery here. For some reason, our carrier is constantly misdelivering mail despite repeated complaints. I signed up for the USPS “informed delivery” emails. Every day I get an email with actual photos of what mail I’m supposed to get that day. I rarely even look at them but now with packages, I’ve been trying to look at them more regularly (they’ve already delivered packages twice to the wrong address last week). We got no mail in our box on Friday and had some junk mail yesterday. So today I was cleaning out my email and happened to look at the email from USPS on Friday. There was a letter from UNH that we never got! So I tell S19 to see if he can log in to the portal. While reading the directions as to how to create an account, it says, “once your application has been processed, you will receive a letter in the mail with your student ID which should be used to create your portal account.” OMG, that is what this letter is…so of course, now he can’t log in. He will have to call UNH tomorrow. I’m so flipping pissed at USPS and now I have to be vigilant to check my emails every day to ensure we don’t miss any college mail. Had I not had “informed delivery” I never would have even known that UNH sent anything. Grrrrrrr.
I use the informed delivery as well and I’ve found that there may be an image for something you are set to receive a certain day and it will not arrive until the next day. It also does not seem to handle specially mail items like acceptance packages and even generally oversized one as well. Sometimes it will show that there is an Irene for which there is no picture.
OMG. The mail issues would put me over the edge. Our old neighborhood had a dairy farmer who delivered rural mail. His system was to deliver odd/even to make it faster. Yes, we got our mail every other day and it was legal. Just that aspect makes the move worth it.
Can you have the post office hold your mail for pick up? At least you would get it. You have my complete sympathy.
I signed up for the informed delivery service two weeks ago because my mail delivery seemed spotty as well…not sure the informed delivery is much better! I get things that weren’t in the email and vice versa…
@TwinMom2023 unfortunately the problem seems to be with our local post office, not just the carrier. There is a community FB Page for our area and the subject of our mismanaged post office comes up at least once a month. People who have PO boxes who are missing mail, packages that can’t be found, etc. When I went in to seek help with my two missing packages, I was told the manager was who I needed to speak with but coincidentally, she was out investigating another missing package complaint. The clerk gave me the direct post office phone number with the manager’s name and send, “You’re better off calling, but the line is usually busy so you’ll just have to keep calling until you get through.” Like I have nothing better to do than spend all day trying to get through on the phone to the manager who may or may not actually be there when I call.
Fortunately most mail we get is junk mail. Our bills are all online. However, now with college apps in progress I need to be more vigilant about looking at my informed delivery notices. I’m fairly sure that someone else got that letter and hopefully will get it to me. Week before last, I got someone’s mail that is one block over. The next day, I got not only his mail again (a credit card bill, so timely and important!), but also his neighbor’s mail. My immediate neighborhood was originally a vacation summer community that eventually has turned over to about half full time residents so if mail gets misdelivered to a summer resident, we are SOL getting that mail!
Fingers crossed that any other college mail makes its way safely to our house!
@4kids4us I’m dumbfounded…like speechless. That is cra cra. A little known fact is that the post office has its own police agency similar to the FBI or ATF. It might be worth reporting directly to them. That whole scenario needs to be in a movie - You Don’t Have Mail.
D19 recently received a large envelope from a school to which has applied. She thought it was an acceptance but was just some information on financial aid. When she started to open it she realized there was another envelope of the same size stuck to it. It was for another student located in a completely different state. Looking at the last name they were in alphabetical order.
So D19 has two more acceptances, one w nice merit of $26,000, but with a $68,000 price tag, probably will not work. They did invite her to apply for honors program, so maybe a bit more merit there? The second admit was to one of our State research universities with admit to honors program. A much better financial fit but soooo far away Now we wait for two more EAs that favs, then the long RD wait. Started playing lotto ?
Possible for us too. I think my D would be ok with that but maybe a little disappointed. I think they hopefully will both have some choices. What is the state option @EENYMum? Western Wa for my daughter.
Just nerve wracking waiting for Dec 12-23 which is when 5 of the EA schools are supposed to respond plus there is one rolling that should notify by mail sometime in the next month. Then waiting for March plus Merit etc which May take more time at some schools.
@JBSeattle in state is Uni of Buffalo. Only SUNY to have direct admit for PT. Her top SUNY pick is a LAC w cooperative agreement w medical college for graduate portion on PT, but we probably will not hear back until March?
I have cousins who all graduated from WVA (they were from PA). They loved their time there and are all doing very well in their professions.
The Jesuits are an order of priests within the Catholic Church. They are known for their focus on education and intellectual rigor. 28 colleges and universities in the US are run by the Jesuits, more than are run by any other religious order within the Catholic Church. They are known to be open minded and welcoming to others of different faiths (and this isn’t to say that orders are not). While they frequently have core curricula which require courses in theology/religion, they rarely require any courses which focus on Catholicism. I attended a Jesuit school and while I was required to take 5 courses in philosophy and religious studies, none of them were about Catholicism per se. The Jesuits tend to be on the liberal end of the political spectrum and many conservatives in the Church disagree with/criticize the Jesuits and their schools for being insufficiently orthodox. While many people may not know much about Catholic colleges in general, the Jesuit “brand” so to speak is generally well regarded, and Catholic schools which are Jesuit brandish that fact as a selling point. Here’s a link to the Association of Jesuit Colleges website if you’d like to know more about them. http://www.ajcunet.edu/institutions
@EENYMum That is us. D started her search basically just not wanting cc or the small public 2 hours away. Ok, fine. Did tons of internet research. We visited a few schools, even did a visit a flight away which is nearly unheard of in our area. D decided that was too far. Visited the small public, went pretty well. Through this fall, she became more sure about what majors she wanted available to her, a specific list of wants, and our small budget. And it all pointed to the small public. It took her a while to get used to the idea after we had looked far and wide but I think she is pretty good with it now.
