D also applied to USC Columbia and she got accepted, but it did not indicate that she would get in state rate, even with the website stating that with her ACT(31)/GPA(3.6UW4.6W) combo that she would. She will receive a scholarship, but won’t know until March what it is. It is her second choice after Tulane, and UGA is her third, which she also got accepted to in the EA round OOS (hard to do, from what I am reading) - but with zero merit. We would love for her to attend UGA, but for $40K/year, that’s not likely. Especially when she will get full Bright Futures for UF or FSU.
sometimes the merit will come after the acceptance. not sure how USC works. Yes, it is a big deal to get accepted EA round OOS for UGA.
My understanding is most schools give fin aid/merit afterwards.
D16 received merit at 4 schools. Two came with acceptances, two came later. One was a surprise because I had seen many students here report receiving their merit with their acceptance and she didn’t get anything so we thought there was none. We actually mentally eliminated the school because it was a high price school at full price. Then in February, out of the blue, she received a letter giving her a fairly substantial merit award. It put that school back on the table again. I have also read of schools raising their merit offers as you get closer to May 1, though we didn’t experience that.
It really is all over the board with merit and FA awards.
For S17 with 7 schools, most sent merit with acceptance but not all. Most merit awards were within 1 day to 2 weeks though. All sent FA later (usually a “hey, you can take a loan!”). Some sent the FA within a couple of weeks but some not till April. We did get a “fire sale” offer of increased merit at one school as it got closer to 5/1.
For S19, his ED school merit was awarded about a week after acceptance. In our case, unfortunately, we will be appealing which is scenario we knew could happen. FA will not come for another 3 weeks or so, if any is offered.
One of his EA schools indicated the scholarship in his accpetance letter but the actual amount hasn’t come yet as it’s a % of tuition and next years tuition isn’t set.
@dfbbdfbb you all good?
@momtogkc Thanks for that great review of SLU. I was just telling my BFF that at UF we’d head to Miami or Atlanta or the beach for road trips all the time. We even made the trek to Boston one time. I’m hoping that if Twin A gets into Hobart & Will. Smith she’ll have fun in Toronto, NYC, and even Montreal. How fun to go to a little school with snow!
D19 received first EA acceptance tonight! And honors college to boot!!!
@EENYMum
Great! Which school?
It’s December 1. Anyone else have a specific date they are waiting on? For us it is Dec. 15 for both twins, but hoping for slightly earlier and my husband will be traveling. Trying to not freak out or stress eat.
Meanwhile…sending good thoughts to our friend on this forum in Alaska.
Yes, positive thoughts to our friend in Alaska. Thinking of you!
@TwinMom2023 Count us in on the date wait. Penn State is releasing EA decisions now (modified rolling admissions) but all anyone knows is that they will hear back by 12/24. The school does not send a “hey, check your portal for an update” email. Which means checking the portal every day.
S19 put his application in the first week of September. So we are in the home stretch now. Getting into main campus is really competitive. He would be happy at his preferred alternate starting campus (or Susquehanna where he has already been accepted). But wow, this wait is nerve wracking. The Penn State threads are a bundle of nerves right now.
@JBSeattle University of Buffalo! PT program.
@EENYMum Congrats!! One of my class of 2019 kids (the one that doesn’t really belong in this group) was also accepted to Buffalo, for the Occupational Therapy program. It’s not her top-top choice simply because it’s not a direct admit program, which concerns her, but the school seems like a good fit for her, even as an OOS student. And of course their Rehab Science programs are excellent. Have you visited?
@InfiniteWaves Wow, I imagine not getting a heads up email does not help with the whole OPC thing! Do the different programs release at diffetent times?
@Bubblewrap666 D19 has not visited but hubby has been there many times. Only SUNY that will guarantee a seat if requirements are met. Will visit once she hears back from other schools.
@EENYMum It’s such a big university. Apparently, there is a method to the admission madness when it comes to processing applications for the various schools and majors. But to those of us waiting, it feels really random.
The system updates once every 24 hours. At midnight. Which should cut back on the OPC. But ya know…
Good luck on the waiting game…so glad I can come here and vent! Even with two acceptances, I am still a bundle of nerves. He is my youngest (so there’s the empty nester realization), he isn’t quite sure what he wants (so there is the indecisiveness) factor), there is the lingering “what if”…stress…too much!!!
@TwinMom2023 we are waiting on Monday at 3pm- that is when QuestBridge match results come out. We are all expecting her not to match, so then we are waiting on December 15th, which is early decision day.
@InfiniteWaves We are PENN STATE! My husband is an alumnus and I swear the school spirit even tops SEC school. Happy Valley is awesome. Crossing fingers for good news soon. The batch notification might break my thin grasp of sanity right now. LOL. My eye is starting to twitch.
@milgymfam Sending very hopeful vibes for QuestBridge match. Let us know.
I’ve had a really busy day and it has helped a lot. Clearly I need a new hobby.
Just popping in to say I’m fine—I’ve just been…distracted.
No deaths from the earthquake, and injuries seem to have been minor. A decent amount of infrastructure damage, though, so we’ll be cleaning up for a while.
The infrastructure damage includes schools—the school district is still evaluating structural damage (D19’s school has cracks in the floors, where either the one side went up several inches or the other side dropped down, D23’s school has a couple wide cracks in the ground nearby, and D25’s school sustained some damage to at least the gym) and so school’s cancelled through at least Tuesday, and similarly the university where I work is closed through Tuesday (the building where my office is sustained serious damage, not sure yet about other buildings).
My house is fine, though we did lose a couple art pieces, but nothing terribly significant.
We do have good college progress news, though: D19 took advantage of school being dismissed early Friday to submit her Bradley and Mississippi State scholarship apps (both due today), and get started on her West Virginia honors app (due something like Tuesday). So that was a silver lining.
