Parents of the HS Class of 2019 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@MAandMEmom
Sounds like a good plan!

@JBSeattle Ohio Wesleyan is a good school and the merit offer is appealing (to parents at least). I enjoyed the years I spent in both Ohio and Washington state (back in the Dark Ages). Maybe it’s your daughter’s way of saying that she doesn’t want to go that far from home. My D17 also nixed Ohio (“too cold”), in spite of an excellent financial aid offer from the University of Toledo. which had a unique program she was really interested in. Of course, San Diego isn’t exactly close either, but it certainly has better weather than Ohio.

@kidzncatz
Her complaint about Ohio is not really about the cold. According to her it is “the middle of nowhere”. Columbus actually has a bigger population than Seattle but it is half hour away. I went to Ohio Wesleyan when I applied and liked it. It was just tough going from California to Ohio at the time.

We also have more ties to California as my Mom lives north of San Jose and I have relatives all over California.

At this point she seems like she is going to Western but not totally happy about it.

WWU looks beautiful to me! Maybe she’ll change her mind?

Here is something funny. UR’s move in day is 8/21 and HWS is 8/22. I have a crazy plan to achieve this, but DH just looked at me like I had four heads. My doctor has triplets and some of their logistics were awe inspiring. LOL

@JBSeattle Ok, now I’m curious - why did she even apply?

So now it’s official. Furman has offered S NOTHING. Has anybody ever called a college and asked for reconsideration? What’s the best way to do that, and was anybody ever successful? He received nice scholarships from 2 other colleges, but we were hoping for something from Furman.

@eb23282
I made her apply to Ohio Wesleyan. She is now thinking it would be good to visit. If she gets this extra $10k a year scholarship then that money goes into her pocket when she graduates. If she gets into Manhattan and the aid is decent then we might make it one long trip.

I told her she needs to check out Ohio Wesleyan and she can always go somewhere else if she doesn’t like it.

BTW, reason I made her apply is she automatically qualified for a $30k per year scholarship. To me, a private school education at in state public prices is appealing. Plus it has the majors she wants.

@TwinMom2023 get those move in hotel reservations made now!

Congratulations, TwinMom!!! What a relief that they are both happy, I’m sure. Excellent choices!

@megan12 Are you asking about a merit scholarship or financial (need-based) aid?

Merit would require that your S be at the top of the academic pool and even with that, Furman doesn’t offer merit to every elite student - there needs to be something more in addition to outstanding stats.

For FA, did you run the NPC? Does it show that there would be some FA expected?

@TwinMom2023 can I ask your D’s stats for H & W? We are looking at that for our D20 and trying to figure out if it would be a match before we make the drive out there to visit. Can you give any insight as to my it was your D’s #1? It looks really great in videos and on paper.

@scholardad I was hoping for one or the other. When we ran the net calculator with his ACT scores included, it did show a little bit of money, but he didn’t send them in because it’s a test optional school, and the scores weren’t great so I wonder if that made a difference. All they offered were some loans, which we don’t want. He was offered much larger scholarships at other schools so I was wondering if we could use that as leverage. Does that ever work?

@megan12 I’m not sure how that works with ED. I have known people to attempt to ask for reconsideration of aid, but it has to be carefully worded, the other schools need to be comparable and you need to be willing to step away .

@megan12 Yes, you can call and request reconsideration of their financial decision. D1 did this a few years ago and got a bigger award from one of her schools. Its worth a try.

@Megan12, when D17 had some merit offers, I remember researching this. I did read that you could let the lower offers (or no offer school in your case) know about the other offers your child has received and see if they reconsider. But I also don’t know how it works with ED. Good luck!

@JBSeattle, I’m a Columbus resident and when I’ve been to OWU, it reminded me a bit of Purdue. It is kind of in the middle of nowhere, yes with Columbus 30 min away, but it’s still a ways out from the outer suburbs of Columbus so appearing to be in the middle of nowhere is true. Columbus is large and great, but not a shuttle ride away obviously.

@TS0104
Any other comments/thoughts on Ohio Wesleyan? I visited when I applied 25 plus years ago so my recollections are minimal and probably very out of date.
With this second scholarship it could push COA down to $15k a year! So that is why I think we need to visit. If my D gets into Manhattan College with a nice scholarship then it will be interesting to visit both. She loved New York when we went about five years ago.
