@nukesmom So exciting!! We are friends with someone who is going there too. She received a nice scholarship
and it is her top choice. I wonder if she’ll be the only one from NC. It looks like a wonderful school. Congratulations.
Yeah @nukesmom !!
Nice to be done with the process and hope your Son loves Boulder!
Congrats on the CU Boulder acceptances and to @nukesmom for being finished! I love Colorado and wish we could visit D16 out there more often (she’s in Fort Collins)
I am struggling through the CSS for the single school on S19’s list that requires it (by Tuesday!) We are in a situation where we expect to pay for the first year from our 529 account, and a 529 set up by a grandparent will pay for most of the rest. We can contribute some additional money depending on where he ends up but most of the funding will come from these two accounts. I really can’t figure out where the grandparent’s 529 account would be reported, if at all, on the CSS. Any ideas?
Congratulations @nukesmom ! Great school and your family is DONE!
@eh1234 I found this on another thread titled: 529s and claiming on CSS and FAFSA
Is the 529 account actually in a trust (ie. governed by trust documents) or is it simply an account that the grandparents own and student is the beneficiary of? 529 accounts owned by a grandparent are not student/parent assets. If the 529 account is in the student’s own name, it would be reported as a parent asset.
Your parents must report in Question 89 all qualified educational benefits or education savings accounts, including Coverdell savings accounts, 529 college savings plans, and the refund value of 529 prepaid tuition plans that they own for any member of the household. This includes accounts owned by the dependent student.
When a grandparent-owned 529 is actually used to pay the student’s expenses, I believe that those payments must be reported as untaxed income to the student on the following year’s FAFSA.
Not sure if this answers your question.
S19 is aiming for sports management, budget around 20k, mid size to large school, prefers the south
He really likes U of H and as a 2nd Texas Tech
@ga19tex
Do you think financial aid could bring down the cost anywhere? Sounds like your FAFSA EFC is at least $30k so maybe not. Will be tough to get anywhere near your budget unless he stays in state.
@dfbdfb
gave some good advice as well.
@ga19tex, I focused on OOS options in my earlier post, but it’s worth keeping in mind that Texas has some quite strong higher-ed options—and Texas’s public regional comprehensives (e.g., UNT, UTSA, UTD,…) are among the best of that type in the country.
I will have him take a look at the ones you have mentioned @dfbdfb for Texas
S19 will apply to U Mass Amherst today, their deadline is 1/15, zoinks!! Mississippi State is reviewing his GPA’s again, TBD as they initially did not include the Texas high school
I feel kind of deflated now that I no longer have this massive ‘to do’ list. With two applicants, thirty plus applications, music supplements/auditions for one and arts portfolio submissions for the other, and every last ounce of personal financial details up for scrutiny (Northeastern, anyone???) - I am simultaneously HUGELY relieved and slightly anticlimactic. Oh well. Onwards and upwards. Roll on March!!
@Britmom5 Sounds like you need a nap! :))
Or perhaps it is tea and crumpets time @Britmom5 !!!
A popular choice on our application lists was Hampshire college. We are devastated at the possibility of them not matriculating students this Fall, due to financial issues. Really disappointing
@Britmom5
Sounds like an unfortunate situation. Good news for you is that there are plenty of other great colleges and universities!
Checking in with you guys. I’ve tried to stay away, it sends my anxiety through the roof! (Not this thread, but virtually every other one I follow on CC ?♀️) We should hear from Kelley school Indiana this Friday. (I’m so afraid something will go wrong with her Direct Admit petition and she’ll be SOL)
Miami EA 2 should come out Feb 1. So should Texas A&M and hopefully UT Austin. (I feel foolish for holding out hope on both of those).
I’m trying to keep busy and distracted so I don’t dwell. This is hard!
@Britmom5 I felt the exact same way. From speedboat to complete idle. It took about two weeks to adjust, but it is fabulous!
We are about to go from idle to six straight weekends of auditions so I am teetering on the precipice of just being generally nervous for S19 24/7.
The very first result for music school should be in mid-Feb, but it’s realistic to expect some rejections and waitlists. Unfortunately, I have no idea if it’s realistic for him to expect to be accepted to any audition-only program. He didn’t take a normal path to deciding on a music major so it all feels like a crapshoot.
Yikes! Best of luck @eh1234!
@ga19tex I will also suggest my son’s school, Ohio University, to you. They have an excellent sports management program (my son has spent several semesters filming and producing for ESPN3 there), give nice merit $ for OOS students, and have a larger student population (around 26k). It is in Ohio, but Athens is a great college town. I believe they accept applications until 2/1.
