I am so happy to report that D19 was accepted to Ohio State last night. She is thrilled and we are too. Here’s where she stands so far…
Accepted: James Madison, Ohio State
Deferred: UMichigan, Tulane
EA still waiting: UMiami, Northeastern, UConn, UMaryland
RD still waiting: Clemson, UMass, URI
He has a favorite but isn’t quite ready to commit yet.
On Saturday we are going to visit UMass Amherst. It’s our state flagship but he’s never seen it. It’s not near us and is in a part of the state that we never have any reason to go to. He doesn’t want to go there but we’ve insisted he at least see it before saying no, especially since he just won’t say yes to his number one.

What is his #1? My daughter’s #1 is Manhattan College. They gave her a decent merit offer but a little more would be nice.
We are going to Ohio Wesleyan in Feb for a scholarship competition and they have already thrown a lot of money at her. It is possible they could get her COA down to $18k per which would be hard to pass up.
She is also waiting on Cal Poly and USD but those seem unlikely (Cal Poly tough admissions wise and a bit expensive, USD not easy admissions wise and merit aid not too likely). She also really seems to like Manhattan but we haven’t seen the school yet (probably visiting in early April).
She has lots of choices, like your son, but some are not realistic financially. She has 6 admittances and 2 deferrals. Oddly, the two deferrals were some of the easier admits on paper.
@JBSeattle I am not going to name the school yet. I will name it after he commits but would rather not have the name hanging out there yet. Yeah, I know this is an anonymous message board, but I still just don’t feel comfortable doing that.
I found a North Face store an hour away. I am seriously considering making Twin A apply for a job there this summer to finance her winter wardrobe for upstate New York. We have a coat, the obligatory Patagonia 1/4 zip, snow boots and a pair of Tims. (Christmas present). She’ll need so much more cold weather clothing that it would be worth the driving for the discount. OMG. She’ll have half a dorm room – where do they put all of this clothing?
@TwinMom2023 North Face has pretty good clearance sales along with a decent outlet. Last summer we attending their clearance event where the outlets brought in all the winter stuff from the regular stores and priced everything around 70% off. I don’t know if they do this everywhere or every year but we felt like we hit the jackpot. Under Armour also has pretty good clearance sales.
For storage, my D17 bought under bed drawers from the container store. They were sturdier than the ones from BBB and after over a year they are still holding up well. They are pretty deep and hold a great deal.
@TwinMom2023 D and I went to an Eddie Bauer outlet today and picked out a serious winter parka for about 60% off. She is also headed to upstate NY and since the temp there today was about 6 degrees, I think it’ll do!
We got DD winter boots yesterday. Yeah, we already live in snowy weather, but after she went sledding last week, she decided she should probably graduate from her shiny purple kids boots. I imagine she’s had them since at least middle school. Her new Northside boots are quite cozy and should last her another several years!
S17 and I are headed to upstate NY this weekend for a college visit. I’m planning to check out what all the guys are wearing on their feet and what kind of coats. He does have a Patagonia fleece pullover but doubt it will do the job up there. I’m pretty sure he has snow boots but they are more the kind for wearing while walking around in snow, not for walking to class and wearing inside. Winter clothing will be something I definitely will observe on the students but will ask while there if I can’t tell on my own what appears to be suitable. We aren’t sure yet whether he will be going that far north so not planning on buying anything until we know for sure.l
