Parents of the HS Class of 2019 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@dfbdfb do you have any secret front runners? I know you try to stay neutral, but I think 10k is a great size. My girls have 40 in their graduating class. Love their small, weird school and really wanted them to go to a tiny college.

Here we go parents of 2019. The final semester. This is my crazy season for work and I am already feeling a little frantic. There is so much to do! Don’t forget about prom shopping. Twin B was talking about it today. I feel like once we get to February, time will fly!

@TwinMom2023 I agree. CofC has about 11,000 students. It’s a good size.

@TwinMom2023 UAH, St Mary’s, and Mississippi State are the clear frontrunners in terms of price (in that order, but with competitive scholarships for the latter two not yet announced), and my D19 has been raised on video of Cuba Gooding Jr and Tom Cruise call-and-responsing “Show me the money!!!”, so…

@dfbdfb I get that. I sent DH on the tour of HWS b/c he was pretty obnoxious about the cost of travel and the 10 hour drive or two-leg flight. He returned agreeing it was perfect for her. We aren’t big fliers so I suppose I’ll be driving it half of the time. Still, the financial impact is real with her acceptance.

Alabama is prettier than Mississippi. :smiley:

D19 was denied from UMD (in-state) today. So far she is not doing well with the Coalition App - beginning to wonder if if there is something to it. Probably just over thinking it. Denied by UMD and deferred at Elon and JMU.

Sorry to hear that @DCNatFan. Was it a top choice for her? I know it’s a tough admit, esp. for certain majors.

My S19 applied and has to wait a week or two for his results (he auditioned Saturday).

@DCNatFan I’m sorry about UMD. As a MD resident myself, that makes me so mad! Did they not even offer Freshman Connection admittance to her? Drives me nuts that kids with stats like hers aren’t getting in. I know she has lots of other options but I can’t recall…does she have a top choice?

I’ve been laying low on this thread b/c we’ve been on pins and needles. The first letter we got was from Towson, which I thought would be a sure bet, but they wanted S19’s 1Q or 1st semester grades before making a decision. I was freaking out b/c that was going to be his “safety” if his sports recruiting doesn’t pan out. The letter came over the holidays. His school is on a block/semester system and his finals were a week after winter break. He was barely hanging on in honors Calc, and came home from the final sure he’d failed it. I told him that he needed to have the college counselor send his 1Q grades ASAP in case he bombed the final (didn’t want her to send his final grades for the first semester). Thankfully she did and he got an acceptance letter a week or so ago. YAY! And fortunately, he did not fail the final and passed the class, although it was a close call!

In the last week, he’s gotten in to UNH, Univ of Maine and URI. Deferred from Loyola EA - I did not know he applied there so sent in his SAT score after he told me he applied. I also did not know they are test-optional (I have a spreadsheet for all of his schools and whether they are TO but since I didn’t have that school on my spreadsheet, I didn’t even think about it and sent in the SAT score. I think he would have had a shot at EA otherwise but he’s already said he doesn’t want to go, so doesn’t matter if he eventually gets in any way.

We are still waiting on a few other schools as he is still in recruitment mode. We are actually on official visit right now at one and head from here to another school. If he gets accepted with an offer to play at any of these, he will go to one of them, as he likes them all. Otherwise, I think he will end up at Towson.

@DCNatFan so sorry about UMD, Elon and JMU.

@DCNatFan - Sorry to hear about UMD.

Sorry - @DCNatFan - UMD has gotten insanely more competitive in recent years. We are no longer in-state but my many in-state friends are frustrated by how hard it is for their kids to get into their state flagship.

@mountainmomof3 Clemson is becoming the same way for instate students.

@carolinamom2boys Yes - my friend is an alumni and fanatic fan and described Clemson as “no one’s safety anymore.” I do worry about state flagships not meeting the needs of their instate population. You should be able to go to your state school. SC at least has a lot of great options. Although MD has some other very good schools, UMD is the only true flagship campus. Lots of kids we know - with above average stats - either get in through spring admission or not at all. When the middle 50% ACT is 30-34 that is kind of crazy. Back in the day, DH got in with a 2.0 and maybe a 1100-1200SAT? I got in with slightly better stats but would not make even spring admission these days.

@DCNatFan Ugh. I’m sorry. You know I love Elon and I bet she’ll get in. I agree that state flagships need to balance in-state and geographic diversity. UNC CH is a another example of highly desirable, but getting to be a super reach school.

Have any acceptances moved way up or are you still waiting in decisions as far as favorites?

@mountainmomof3 I grew up on Baltimore and a Towson alum. I was accepted to UMCP back in the day, but I chose OT over PT for my major.

Towson is a great school and one of the ones I was referencing. And for certain majors most definitely the best or only choice.

@DCNatFan sorry to hear about UMD. I’m still waiting for D19 to check her decision. It is Friday night, after all. The Coalition app seems to have a lot of problems. There are several people in the UMD thread complaining that they thought their app was complete, received emails that it was complete or spoke with someone in admissions, and yet they haven’t received decisions. Now they’re not even sure they’re in the RD round. What a mess!

Ugh. D19 just checked UMD and…does not have a decision. Now it looks like her transcript wasn’t submitted until Dec 6th. (EA deadline was Nov 1, app was submitted 10/29.) So…she may be in the RD pool? She has sent an email to her GC, and plans to contact UMD on Monday. Frustrating.

@momzilla2D Oh no! That does suck.

Usually, schools will give some leeway (I think UNC-CH, for example, gave 1-2 weeks) to submit things like LORs and transcripts after the published EA deadline, so long as the actual application was submitted on time.

Maybe your DD will get some leeway too? But 4 weeks may be too much beyond the deadline for UMD, so they may have shifted her in the RD pool like you suggested.

Good idea contacting UMD first thing next week.

Good luck to your DD.

@DCNatFan I am so sorry, that’s hard.

Similar issues here with our flagship, tons and tons of kids turned down. Those results aren’t out till March but it’s a stressful time for lots of local kids. Very hard when your flagship isn’t really an option for most of the state. And hard for me as an alumn to admit it wasn’t the right place for at least 3 of our 4.

Lottery proved out as … lottery. D rejected from UVA. This is not a surprise - even Parchment put her odds at 1.27%. D is non-plussed; VA family convinced her to apply but she never for a moment thought she’d get in. She’s that way. Her mama on the other hand has more than a bit of “why not, miracles happen,” even in the face of … stark reality. In fact, it’s a good thing - I’m looking at the UVA Class of 2023 EA thread and, holy moly, the kids being deferred have GPAs .8 higher than hers, with 5-9 more APs. Rejection was appropriate. In a way, it is reassuring. And now,the long wait to March.
