Parents of the HS Class of 2019 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

Congratulations @carolinamom2boys !

@TwinMom2023 CofC is still his top choice. It has his first preference major, Historic Preservation and Community Planning.

Any Jmu applicants here?

@carolinamom2boys My D applied to JMU, and was accepted EA.
Congrats to your son on Wofford and Flagler!

@momzilla2D when did he find out and what major?

My son applied to JMU EA and was deferred

When did JMU decisions come out?

@carolinamom2boys She heard on January 10th. Her major is Undecided Science, with a Criminology track.

Congrats @carolinamom2boys!

And thanks for including the reminder that some test optional schools offer merit even with sending test scores. S19 has applied to several, and S21 will also when his time comes. Another school that offers merit even without sending test scores is McDaniel in MD (my son didn’t apply but a friend of his is going there).

Deferred from JMU as well on January 10. Expect to hear RD by 3/15.

Does anyone know what chances a deferral has at being accepted, particularly JMU? I read in a different forum ā€œa deferral is basically a soft denialā€ - yet I’ve read of many students that say they were accepted RD after an earlier deferral.

@kathyrain The deferral letter stated that in the past two years 40% of students deferred were admitted in the RD round.

Congrats to all on the acceptances!

So an update on D19. First, we heard back from NC State and she was rejected. She was devastated. We’re still waiting on 5 schools to release decisions. Her top 2 schools are reaches so it looks like she will be attending Arizona State unless by some miracle she gets accepted to one of the 2 UCs she applied to.

Second, she’s having surgery tomorrow to remove a misaligned screw that was placed in her spine about 14 months ago. Hopefully this will solve the problem and she will be pain free soon. She will also be able to return to school finally. We’re crossing our fingers.

@cinn1 so sorry for the rejection. Hope the surgery is successful and recovery is quick .

@cinn124 ASU sounds like a great option given the rainy cold weather we are having the southeast today! Sorry about the rejection, it’s so hard on the kids. Here’s hoping the surgery provides the answer to her prolonged pain. Maybe a new day is on the horizon.

@cinn124 sending positive thoughts for surgery. Food for thought - would NCSU Jan. 2020 admit be worth considering? I did spring admit for UF decades ago and it was great.

Hi all, Thanks for the previous advice. My D19 rec’d all her EA, she got 6/6 acceptance and one RD result waiting. She got deferred 2020 Spring admission of UMD College Park, in which a high reach for her. However, UMD is the highest COA for us! Any possibility for her to start her freshmen in other colleges Fall 2019 and defer UMD till 2020 Fall, then transfer her credit from other colleges back to UMD in 2020 Fall? Also, any downside for starting Freshmen in Spring, especially about housing and registration of course? Welcome advice.

@ashmomhk - your D can sign up for freshman connection at UMD and she will start in the fall and can live on campus. She will have to take classes at off-peak times. Then in spring she will take classes whenever she wants. The FC kids live with everyone else, take classes with non-FC kids, etc. My understanding is that it is first come first serve for the program, so if this is of interest I would check it out. There are some threads about it on UMD forum.

@ashmomhk https://admissions.umd.edu/enroll/admission-decision-faqs/freshmen-connection

@ashmomhk UMD offers spring admits the opportunity to start in the fall through Freshman Connection. The program has restrictions on times of classes and requires a 1 credit class to help transition students to college but they are otherwise the same as other freshman. I have no personal experience but have heard good things about the program.
