@carolinamom2boys Congrats!
@bjscheel she already has smart black pants and a couple of blouses for mock trial, so to add to that she got a lovely red wool blazer and a pair of smart but flat-so-comfortable black leather shoes (sheâs tall so gets away with flats!)
Yeah weâre in NorCal so our winter weather is not really an issue (though for us itâs still really cold, lol!)
@Britmom5 yes thatâs what my husband is saying⊠sheâs just helping us get ready for when sheâs gone âŠ
@SJ2727 , my DD is looking for some comfortable dress shoes (flat) for a scholarship interview. Can you share the brand name? ( PS we are in Norcal too)
@Ranipetgirl , they are Halogen.
Iâm at home under the weather thinking of what we need too!
Scholarship dinner dress with shoes that are not boots, but it will be cold. I have no clue and Twin A loathes shopping. Two prom dresses, and Twin B has zero clothes that fit b/c she is short and lost 15 pounds. I donât even know where to begin! Twin A said everything I pick out looks like âMOMâ clothing.
Thank you @SJ2727
@TwinMom2023 you may want to look at The Loft for interview clothes. They have petites. I like Ann Klein shoes. She has nice flats.
Congrats @carolinamom2boys !
@TwinMom2023 I feel you. DD needed a black dress for Jazz Choir. We bought one last year that she used. I didnât like the short length so I wanted another for this year (sheâs 5â1"- no dresses should be too short on her yet here we are). Looked in so many places and they were wrong size, too skimpy, not bra friendly, fabric too thin, too matronly, and so on. She got tired of looking. A plain black dress shouldnât be that hard! She also wanted a red one for speech. Finally last week I found a style on Amazon she agreed to and we bought both colors. She used the black one Saturday. The red one has an awkward line over the bust from the lining so Iâm working up the courage to modify it. Feels like no matter how full her closet is, we are always still lacking in the ârightâ dressy clothes.
Prom is covered though, we had success buying online, just needs hemmed- of course.
@bjscheel I hear your pain, just from the other endâyour daughterâs 5â1", mineâs a bit under 6â0". Why clothing manufacturers canât figure out thereâs a pretty decent-sized number of women out there who donât fall into the 5â6"±2" range, I donât understandâŠ
Ahh, dress shopping for a girl. So glad I donât have to worry about that this year for prom since I have a boy this time around! It was a quite challenging for D17 as she doesnât really have a waist. While she ended up with a pretty dress, it was not flattering (she wouldnât listen to me) and made her look very top heavy even though she does not have a large chest. Thankfully it will be easier just worrying about a tux this time around.
I just had the pleasure of dress shopping with my 13 y/o dd. Such a hard age to buy for as itâs an in-between age. Everything is either too juvenile or too vavavoom! Though she is not super tall, sheâs 5â5" but has really long legs which does not make it easy to find a dress that doesnât look too short. Somehow we really lucked out and found an age appropriate dress at Macyâs.
Bought plane tix for admitted students day at the end of March. I really need it to not snow as I donât drive in snow - ever. Iâm excited and also nervous about the reality that this will be her home for four years. Ack!
@TwinMom2023, does the school provide transportation from and to the airport for admitted students day(s)? Some schools do.
@rosered55 I donât think so, but itâs a good idea to check! Thanks.
@TwinMom2023 I hear you on the not wanting to drive in snow. Iâm totally inexperienced at it and intimidated by it. Weâre visiting Hope College in Holland, Michigan at the end of the month for their Fly-In Weekend and they are providing shuttles to and from the airport within certain defined time frames, so we scheduled our flights to work with those. Definitely worth checking with the college.
@corinthian we need a thread for parents of kids going to college in cold climates. Iâm hoping to keep the âflying home nightmares due to weatherâ at a minimum.
Been forever since Iâve been on here, busy busy, busy!
@Corinthian Glad to see Hope is still on the table for you! We are driving distance so we will be visiting mid-March. Combining it with Kzoo admitted student weekend so killing 2 birds. Once these visits are done itâs time to start really getting down to the nitty-gritty. She has a clear front runner but they are the most expensive option at the moment. Her second choice is a place we both love, she would be happy to go and is affordable, but feels like she might be âsettlingâ since she fell in love with her first choice. Gentle discussions about money, major and happiness are currently on-going. Hoping these 2 visits start narrowing the field so we can finally pay a deposit and get on with life!
@corinthian, or flying home to/through cold climates. My D19 is by now clearly going to be in college in a warm-to-hot area (whichever school she picks), but coming home, sheâs flying through MSP, Denver, Chicago, or (maybe) Seattle, soâŠ
I havenât checked in for a while. Glad to see so much good news for many.
This is my 3rd go around. Dealing with flights South, I can tell you, routing thru Chicago was never an issue. They are used to it and well prepared. Flying out of Birmingham and AtlantaâŠThere were issues. My son learned how to navigate, and sleep, at airports. We often opted for Southwest Airlines with connections and multiple flights to our home center over direct flights that were only once a day. SW doesnât charge for changing flights. Worked well for us.
Now is a great time to look at the various airlines and number of flights. Pick your favorite airline and consider a credit card from that airline for the flight credits many offer for signing up.
DDs mid-term grades are out and her overall GPA increased. At least two of the colleges are willing to re-evaluate merit based upon this and her Dec ACT score increase. Even though we are still awaiting 2 more decisions, her mind is set on U of Lynchburg.
Hi @Longhaul That is great advice. We are flying SW to admitted students day and I was thinking a credit card might be the way to go. I never thought about the multiple legs though and Iâm sure just that piece of information will come into play. Sheâll be changing planes at BWI so that will be dicey.
Congrats to your DD on grades and improved ACT. Always nice to have more aid.
Growing up in FLA the common joke was flying to Heaven or Hell, youâd be changing planes in Atlanta - with a delay. LOL.
