Parents of the HS Class of 2019 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

Of course, talking about flights, it isn’t always cold weather. I went out to fly home with my D17 at the end of her freshman year in the northern mid-Atlantic, and in late May the issue wasn’t snow and such, it was thunderstorms—and so instead of getting home at about 6:30 in the evening, we got home the following day at half past noon. :frowning:

@TwinMom2023 Absolutely look into the SW Rewards card. We have done 23 round trip flights in 6 years with points and still have over 200,000. It is SO nice booking with points because you can make changes at any time and the points just go back into your account (versus getting a flight credit that has to be used within 12 months of original booking). If the flights decrease in price, you can get the difference put back in your account.

We got 3 cards with bonus points (2 in my name- personal and business). Ended up cancelling the one in DH’s name later. It’s best if you can get them in the same person’s name so all the points are pooled in one Rapid Rewards account. DH does have a business so he charges semi fuel on it. I use the other one quite a bit for household expenses so between them we earn a few thousand points a month. I also do e-Rewards surveys and if I really get into it can earn 2400 points/month that way.

some airlines (like JetBlue) allow family pooling which also helps maximize points, FYI.

D19 got accepted to Clemson yesterday!! She’s very excited. It’s at or near the top of her list. But, we haven’t visited, so will need to do that before deciding. I think I underestimated how challenging it would be to plan the revisit days. Indirect flights, missed school days, overlapping dates, other appointments and activities. It’s a good problem to have though. :smiley:

Current status…
Accepted: James Madison, Ohio State, URI (w merit), Clemson
Deferred: UMichigan, Tulane, UMiami
Denied: Northeastern
Still waiting: UConn, UMass, UMaryland

Congrats @momzilla2D

I think my daughter’s mind is made up but she should hear from University of San Diego and Cal Poly SLB within the next week.

Congrats @momzilla2D! (And yes, the calendar gets a little chaotic quickly!)

@momzilla2D - Thats great! S19 has several friends waiting to hear from Clemson this week…

@momzilla2D Congrats! She is having a great year with admissions!

@momzilla2D Congrats!!! Great news.

Congrats @momzilla2D

Hi everyone, I am late joining this thread…and I hope I am not disrupting the airlines conversation (I will chime in eventually lol).

When people talk about stats, some have 13, 14, 15 APs. I wonder how did those kids that that many AP classes? Did they really have all of those APs at their school, or do they take some online and did the AP exams. At our school, DD took 8 AP total (4 in her Junior and 4 Senior), for freshman and Sophomore she could only take honors. All of her APs were hard math/science (Calculus, Statistic, Physics, chemistry, etc.) and History and English. It literally feels impossible to take that many APs courses within the 2 years and have a life, yet kids from this site do it. DD’s GC said her course work is the most rigorous compared to her peers. Then I went on here and it feels pretty light weight. Just wonder what other experiences are. What is the real story here? Any insight would be appreciated.

Another thing is, when people talk about GPA of 4 or even 5 point something. I can’t even compare. Our school gives the absolute number out of 100 max. For AP classes they added 5%. DD has a 94 unweighted and 99 weighted. Either way it’s still just an A. And if you translate A to 4 point scale it’s a 4.0. So how does school compare DD with a kid with, say 4.9 GPA or 5.5 GPA. How is it a GPA of 4.9 compared to 99? Did the 4.9 or a 5.5 student have a higher than 99 absolute GPA? Surely everyone has the absolute number, everything started out with the absolute number.

Not that it matters what the outcome is, I am just curious. We are waiting for results from the UCs and some Ivies before making the final decision (already got into UMich which can be a solid choice for her).

Glad I found this site!

S got into Western Washington! So happy! Still waiting to hear on everything else! It is one of his top choices, so he may end up there!

Sorry about all the exclamation marks…

@natty1988 Congratulations to your son!!! And no need to apologize for excessive exclamation marks! We all understand!!!

@natty1988
Congrats! Western WA is an option for my daughter as well. It is certainly a great value for us since we are in state. It also is a beautiful campus (if you haven’t had the chance to visit).

Love all of the exclamation marks! @momzilla2D and @natty1988 - congratulations!

Exclamation marks are ok!! Congratulations! @natty1988

@Nhatrang I think you posted to the wrong thread. This thread is for parents of kids with GPAs 3.0- 3.4. I think this translates into the mid 80’s using the 100 point scale you mentioned. No one here is applying the anything like Ivies and probably UMich is even out of reach for this group. Most here also don’t have anything near the number of APs you mentioned.

Thanks everyone! We’re really happy! And congrats to everyone else on the acceptances! Looking forward to hearing about more!

Oops sorry guys, carry on.
