Parents of the HS Class of 2019 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

The whirl wind tour of accepted student days has come to an end yesterday.

4/3 - Manhattan College - Second visit to campus, confirmed earlier thoughts that was a definate finalist. Scores high on all marks

4/6 - SUNY Cortland - About 30 minutes into the initial presentation we knew this would be a no. Campus is nice, new student center is AMAZING. The whole day was not well organized. the academic departments were cramed in next to sororities and other clubs. There is really no out of state presesnce and it seemed like everyone was from long island.

4/7 - St Joe’s - They certainly know how to host an accepted student day and make you feel welcome. Student ambassadors, bands, cheerleaders…This was our second visit. We did another tour, got some time to meet with the speartment chair and talk about options. We left the day feeling like it was easily a place she could call home. Stays on as a finalist

4/12 - Catholic University - Really nice accepted student day. Campus is really nice, started off the day in the Basilica, which is amazing. Campus ministry and service opportunities are amazing, but the Education program fell short of the others as they currently do not have special ed on the undergrad level. Wostudentuld have considered it for another major but it’s off the list

4/13 - West Chester University - Our second visit here, really nice campus. Great Teaching program, downtown West Chester is really nice. School of education is well supported in the university. Dorms in the affiliate housing are beautiful. Stays on the list but

So that leaves us with two clear leaders in Manhattan and StJoseph’s with West Chester as an outside shot. Happy to provide any additional insight on any of the scools we visited

@Novacat9191
Front runner between the 2?
I am pretty sure Manhattan will be my daughter’s choice but not final decision. It is interesting how each side of the campus at Manhattan is so different.

@JBSeattle right now I think it’s 50/50. There are some things she really likes about each school, and really no negatives on either. Giving her a week to digest the visits and weigh her options.

S is still unsure of where to go: His top choices are Western Washington, NAU, Linfield, and Colorado State…
He also said he would be happy going to Whittier and Sonoma State…

Western Washington, NAU, and Colorado State would be affordable with WUE. Linfield gave us good but not great fin aid and we’d probably have to take some loans out, same with Whittier. Whittier is only 45 min to an hour from us, so that would keep travel costs down…though he may have to help with gas if he takes his car and wants to come home often…
Sonoma State is affordable because it’s in-instate

For Eckerd in Florida we have appealed for more Fin Aid. This is the school that really matters for aid since it’s so far away (flights are more expensive and costs a bit more). Eckerd was one his top choices, but it’s down a bit…

He also got into Humboldt and San Francisco State but he is not interested in going to either place

He got denied from Willamette, San Diego State (not that surprising considering how many people apply and how impacted a lot of the majors are), CSU Chico ( a bit surprised, but again it’s a popular school to apply to) and Colorado-Boulder…

Has anyone here attended Western Washington or from the area? Also, has anyone from Socal attended or have a child attending?

@cinn124 My sister in law’s niece from her side of the family went to Arizona State and had a wonderful time. It’s a popular school with a lot of California kids. And the campus in Tempe is not that far from Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport which has a lot of flights. CSU Long Beach is about 45 min away from us. We toured it with both D and S. D liked it and applied and got in, but ended up going elsewhere. S didn’t like it and didn’t apply. A friend of D’s went there and had a good experience. Both H and I had several co workers who went there. And my kids had more then one teacher who attended Long Beach. It’s a very popular school for teaching and nursing in our area…

NAU is about a two hour drive north of Phoenix. Flagstaff does have an airport, but it’s small. I think it only has flights to LAX and Phoenix. There are two companies that run shuttles from NAU to the airport in Phoenix or students get rides with other students.

@natty1988 Amtrak does a straight overnight shot back and forth from Fullerton (or LA) to Flagstaff. It’s a cheap and neat trip. It’s called the Southwest Chief.

@eandesmom a few of us with 2021ers are interested in a similar thread as this one for that class. I haven’t seen one yet, but is there a way to get one started and have it appear on the Class of XXX Community page? Do you (or anyone else) know how to start one up that will then be placed into that sub page? I don’t want it to get lost in the Parents Forum since it may not be as active as this one for a while. Thoughts? Or know who I can PM for help?

@4kids4us I wish I knew. I wanted that both for the 2017 one and for this one and had zero success. I had asked around but got zero response and help. I’d also asked to have the 2017 one moved after it was up and running and didn’t get anywhere. It was a long time ago so the mods may be different and able to help. It ends up being frustrating as you’ll find some duplicate type threads started.

I really do hope to have results updates soon, so lame!

@natty1988 we are local to WWU and know tons of kids and alumni (both recent and my age). What would you like to know?

I am a big fan, it was my S17’s second choice school. You have some very very different schools to choose from. Big state D1 school, Lage regional state school, Mid sized state state school and an LAC. I will say that Linfield is not hugely popular or a top LAC choice around here for that general range and always felt (to me) overpriced for what it was. It’s a nice school but I think there are better LAC’s / smaller Schools at that price point for kids in our stats (SPU, UPS, PLU, Seattle U, U of Portland). Just personal opinion though, I really know very little about it compared to the others.

We know happy kids at NAU and CSU as well. All 3 (NAU, CSU and WWU) will have a great college town experience and great weather in my opinion. I’m not a huge fan of Humboldt. Depends on the major but I’d take the others first (personally). What major?

@eandesmom thanks for the insight - maybe it changed after you started this one b/c I see that both 2020 and 2022 have similar threads on the Class of XXXX Sub-board.

If I can figure out how to get one started there (or if not there, then here), do you mind if I cut and paste the info from your initial posts on the this thread?

@4kids4us of course not!

You may want to include the new results once I get them done. Which will be next week at the latest I think.

If you find out how, I’d love to get this one moved! 2017 for that matter. Good kuck

@4kids4us, wouldn’t it just be a matter of creating a thread and making an initial post on it, like any other thread?

@dfbdfb there is no way to create a new post on that sub forum. I asked the OP who started one of the 3.0-3.4 threads that appears there currently. She said she had a similar problem - no button for creating a new thread. She said one day it just magically appeared. However, there’s no button currently there. I’ll have to ask a moderator.

@eandesmom thanks for the permission to use your info! Unless someone gets to it first, I hope to get in touch with a moderator this week to see if it’s possible.

D19 has decided on CSU Long Beach. We went to visit and she really liked it. So that’s it. Enrollment deposit is paid and housing application is submitted.

@cinn124 Congrats to your daughter! She was really serious about crossing the country, so good for her. And what a different experience than NY. So pleased after all she’s been thru.

@cinn124 Congratulations on your daughter’s decision!

@cinn124 - Congrats on her decision!

@natty1988
Western Washington is likely to wind up being a second choice for my D. The campus is beautiful and overlooks the bay between US and Canada (just in case you have not visited). The college is broken up into sub schools as well. For a state school, the accessibility of classes is excellent and kids tend to graduate on time. It is also nice that both Vancouver and Seattle are relatively close by car (1 hr and 1 1/2 hour roughly depending on traffic/border wait).
I have never heard anyone say anything disparaging about the school (I have heard lots of negative things about the more prestigious University of Washington).
