Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

@orangefish said

I’m a bit behind on this thread and just saw this – I have a LOT to say about my own learning curve with my D19 and her ADHD. If you want to private message me, please feel free to! But I am aware that your query is not new, you asked it in the second half of August. So…ignore this if you’re all cool now.

Thank you @jenjenjenjen! PM’ing you – as D19 and our family are absolutely not “all cool now”. (Could not find a bang-head-on-desk emoji.)

@Corinthian I’ know I’m late to the convo, but you mentioned Colorado College as a good school for kids with attention issues due to its block schedule. My D17 is there, and loves the school (despite totally normal adjustment issues like missing her “real” friends and home). But, if a student does not like a given class, I imagine it would be even harder because there aren’t other courses and the class meets every day for the duration of the block. Just food for thought!

@JenJenJenJen thanks for the feedback. I was just speculating about whether a block schedule might be good for a kid with ADHD/anxiety. My kid really struggles with time management, procrastination and organization. She can rise to the occasion when her back is to the wall. So I’m just wondering out loud if she’d do better on a block schedule where she just had to focus on one class at a time. I think I’ll post on the LD subforum to see if anyone has feedback on that.

Do we have anyone here expecting to be in the path of the coming hurricane?
Three days done with junior year. So far, so good. But we are in the honeymoon period. As expected, d’s favorite classes by far are AP Chem, Physics and BC calc. My fingers are crossed that they continue to be loved and that English and social studies don’t become overwhelming.

I thought Colorado College seemed perfect for S19. I thought he would like the idea of one class at a time since he’s always pulled in so many directions now. He said, though, that the thought of one class freaks him out. What if he gets sick and is out of class for a few days? Also, he’s so undecided right now. He thinks he needs multiple classes at one time in hopes of finding something he wants to study. With one class at a time, he thinks he’d be in school forever. I still think it’s a cool idea. Just maybe not for the undecided.

@mom2twogirls we are in SC. I just evacuated my DS16.

Colorado College seems like a cool idea, but @homerdog raises a good point about the undecided. My D16 had looked into Cornell College, but, well, it was in Iowa.

@carolinamom2boys Did you evacuate your S16 back home? Enjoy the unexpected visit if so. Hopefully Charleston will escape unscathed and its not too interruptive to his school year.

After two weeks, it is unclear if S19 likes any classes. He said AP Psych was fun last week. My hopes that he would love AP Physics or engineering have been killed by dull teachers. He’s not really engaged in the school year yet and seems to be doing the bare minimum required of him - hope he doesn’t get a rude awakening on any quizzes or tests this coming week! Also, he would rather eat a bag of dirt than read the Scarlet Letter. It’s hard to think about college for a kid who isn’t interested in school in general but even he agrees he should go to college for . . . . something.

He’s been spending most of his time (when he’s not on his phone), teaching himself a difficult movement from a Bach cello suite on his bass and practicing for an upcoming regional orchestra audition. I wish I had a time machine and a money tree - I would go back in time and spend the thousands and thousands of $$$ to put him in summer programs and master classes from age 8 so he could have the entire instrument repertoire mastered and maybe head to music school.

@eh1234 Yes, we brought DS16 home today. Waiting and watching for what comes next.

Keep us updated @carolinamom2boys. I feel for you there, the anxiety must be terrible.

@mom2twogirls where we live in SC, we are expecting high winds and rain starting Mon night. We shouldn’t have any major issues. The weather is beautiful right now. I’m enjoying having DS16 home , and just waiting for orders for when he needs to return to school.Because of the turn of the storm, only the barrier islands of SC are now under mandatory evacuation . I think that we probably have dodged a bullet. Thank to for your concern .

@carolinamom2boys Wow. Great that you can get him home. This whole storm is so scary. What did kids do who couldn’t go all of the way home? Does the school have a safe place for them?

@homerdog The school has evacuation plans in place . They evacuate students inland to other schools, but it’s been our experience that many students end up going home with friends. Many families open their homes. Last year during Matthew, only about 20 students needed to be evacuated out of almost 11,000. The president of the college put every student on that bus. We truly are a college family. People have been so generous with rides and places to stay. There was one woman who posted on our list serv yesterday that she had bought her daughter a plane ticket to DC, but her daughter had left with friends instead. The woman was offering the ticket FREE to anyone that needed to get out. Another woman posted that one of her rental properties was available to displaced students or families . Similar stories last year. It is a great school , and I’m so happy my son attends . He’s had great educational opportunities that he probably wouldn’t have had at the other schools that he applied to. The best thing is it was his first choice as soon as he stepped on campus.

@carolinamom2boys What an amazing reaction from the school and the families. I think I need to add College of Charleston to our S19 and D21’s list! That’s where your D is, right? That type of community is exactly what I want for our kids. I hope everyone is back to class soon and the damage is minimal.

My parents are in Orlando and it looks like the winds are now forecast to be more like 70 miles per hour instead of 90 when it gets to them. Still scary. They seem in good spirits and are boarding up their place and going to a hotel for Sunday night. I wonder how many retirees will decide Florida is becoming too risky a place to retire. :frowning:

My son does attend the Honors College there. It is a great school. I can’t say enough good things about the Honors College and the CS department. They have great info on their website you might be interested in. My son is a WIlliam Aiken Fellow.

@carolinamom2boys sorry about the daughter/son mix up! I didn’t read carefully and should have remembered you had a son there, not a daughter. I’m going to mention Charleston to some friends who have kids with CS interest for sure.

Just an update to our discusion on whether to send SAT scores for S19’s 1st administration. Initially I was thinking not to, just because the score could be less than ideal. However, after thinking it over, I’ve decided to send the score to 4 of his interested colleges. All of which superscore. Might as well since its free and he has been studying so hard! Also, I did end up signing S19 for the Dec. SAT…he is not going to like me when I tell him

Jumping into the thread as I’m way behind on managing the college search for my dd. She is my 4th kid so she’s basically been set to autopilot her way to this pt. Raised by wolves basically. My 3 others all went to Pitt for engineering…you’d think she’d follow suit? Well nope - no deal. Her
college criteria is “has palm trees”. And you all talking about ACT testing already…argh - have to get my mind in this game again…

@amandakayak - welcome! Love the “raised by wolves” - my kids are both kind of feral at times also.
Is your kid a high-stats kid or more mid-range? Mine is mid-range and probably can’t swing this, but if you want palm trees and she has the stats, FSU has scholarships that can get you an OOS tuition waiver. UF, no such luck, and it’s got a higher bar for entry.
@4MyKidz - I also ended up sending the four freebies - to the four schools that superscore that she’s most likely to apply to - after calling and getting assurances that the superscore is used for merit as well.

Just saw this in the theater section. Drew is lowering tuition 20%.
This could have something to do with the financial difficulties they’re experiencing (along with a lot of high-priced mid-tier LACs)
