Pretty sure my d’s scores are in. My husband said he didn’t look at them but saw where to click to see them. Either that or he totally saw them but won’t admit it, lol. Anyway, picking d up from school soon and then we will check. Fingers crossed!
@mom2twogirls You’re killing me! I hope D is happy with the scores. If not, plenty of time to retake.
The whole “Patience Grasshopper” approach never works for me. I’m dying with you! Positive vibes too all!!
Ugh, it’s still not there! He saw the message saying the score is in and to look below. Apparently he hadn’t heard me say that it said that all day but the score isn’t there. So still waiting.
S19 said no one who took the test at his HS has scores, but a few kids who went to a neighboring school got theirs. I guess I’ll give it a couple of hours and then check back Monday?
OK - I can stop with whining because the scores are in! Son improved by 120 points over his 10th grade PSAT and got exactly the score and breakdown I thought he would get based on his practice tests and how he felt about the test. Very happy for him!
Yup the same. Says Click here to see scores but nothing but old subject test scores there.
I can no longer log in. Perhaps they are doing something?
Punching keys or using stack of cards to enter the scores.
@eh1234 Yea!!! Is he still taking an ACT? Or can he be done. It’s so early to be done with testing but, when it works out, it’s pretty nice.
I’ll have to ask him if he wants to take the ACT (if I don’t get my money back, he’s taking it, ha!)
If it were me, I would actually study a little and take the SAT again (another 20 points in RW would have been really nice) but I don’t know if he’ll care. I think if he decides to take it again, it won’t be until next summer (and only then if he needs a higher score for merit aid, assuming he looks at colleges by that point).
I always thought he would test well. Meanwhile, he’s 10 chapters behind in his book in English, just took several tests without studying, and does all of his homework at the last minute in the most half-a**ed way possible.
Got scores too. Pretty decent scores - improved by 10 points over 10th grade PSAT.
I guess he will retake it in December and perhaps will consider ACT as well.
Well, we are happy. The score ended up being right in the range we really expected when we talked about it last night… in that place where it’s a tough call whether it’s worth taking one more time or not. It’s pretty funny because I was telling d last night that is what life seems to be like, a Murphy’s Law kind of thing. She had a jaw dropping math score and a respectable RW score. We left whether she wants to try one more time to raise the score up to her. The score she got will get her into the instate public (likely honors program but I’d have to doublecheck) and probably most of the privates that aren’t highly selective. A bit higher RW score could at least get her a shot at slightly more selective privates and some more scholarships at her likely admits. She says she wants that one more shot. We are thinking she will go for the December one, that she needs the break and it’s not worth the late fee for November. All in all, we are really happy. Especially since this was her first real standardized (not practice) test like this as she hadn’t ever taken the PSAT, ACT or other SAT aside from at home or the library. And the scores really emphasize that she is looking in the right direction for college major/career plans.
@mom2twogirls that’s great news! I especially like the part about how the score confirms D is looking at the right schools. We felt the same way. You never really know until you have the real scores in hand. Practice tests only tell you so much. Congrats again!
Would like to pass along some information I heard at GW parents weekend, when they discussed Yields and admissions. They said that for everyone they accept, they put also put in a a percentage they think that person will enroll. An example was one kid that was given 13% chance that was a child of someone who worked there. Why they were given that percent, was mostly due to “distance from school”. Apparently for the private schools the closer one lives to them, the less likely they are attend. The “sweet spot” is about 200-300 miles away for the northeast. so for example, someone living in Boston is less likely to attend Northeastern, and might , for example , choose Drexel. (just an example). They still of course accept kids who they might not think will attend, but this is how they know about how to many to accept to get the target class. So I would think sometimes admissions might accept someone with high stats on the very off chance they might attend, but also gives someone that might think of it as a longshot admission, knowing they would attend. Its definitely a numbers game for sure. Or that percentage might be used to whom they will give merit aide to.
On a different note, DS19 got his score back for SAT MATH 2 subject test. I know it sounds awful to say that he only got a 770, but that is 67%tile and if he wants to apply to a reach school, such as CMU, the question is if he needs to retake to try to get that “800”. he still needs to take a science one. he will be taking the regular SAT in December. If he had scored a 750 or below, the answer would be clear.
@sdl0625 I think for tippy top schools, anything above a 750 for Subject Tests passes the barrier and once met, the AO will look to other aspects of the application. I’ve read many senior members on these threads indicate that the score on the subject test is what the AO’s focuses on, and not the percentage, especially for the Math 2 where it’s only the self selecting strong math students who take the test.
Thanks for the info on GW. It confirms our understanding that this type of “percentaging” is utilized at other schools as well, and concerns our application process for my high stats twins. We’ve visited and will continue to visit many of their safeties to show their “interest”, but I’m incredibly worried that they will be shut out of the lottery schools, unlucky at their match schools and given a bad “percentage” at their safety schools.
That “distance from school” philosophy is interesting. My S19 could possibly consider GW or American because he could commute from home and we might (almost) be able to afford the tuition (for 3.5 years). In fact, those are probably the only “better” private universities he could possibly consider going to! He was actually born at GW’s on-campus hospital.
18 parent here. I believe in those distance from school stats. I do believe geographic diversity plays a role too.
800 in Math II subject test is 80%tile.
It is up to him. If he wants to retake it, he can take it again with the science test on the same day.
Logistical question about the ACT. D19 is taking it this weekend. She doesn’t drive yet. I know that she’s not allowed to have her phone with her when she takes the test. But do they collect phones at the front of the room? That’s what they did for the PSAT. But this is at a different school during a weekend. I said they probably won’t do that (though I’m not sure). She’s wondering if she’ll be able to call me when she’s ready for pick-up.
I just told her that I’ll be in the parking lot at 1 pm and to look for me.
@gusmahler I just tell the kids I’ll be in the parking lot at a certain time. Works just fine. Might just mean I have to get there a little early and spend some time listening to NPR in order to get a decent spot.
Good luck to your D this weekend!
My d said for the SAT they collected phones in the front of the room. She chose not to take hers for any testing because she didn’t want to worry about forgetting it or accidentally leaving it on and having it buzz during testing. I just got there at the earliest time she could leave and waited in the car with my phone and book for entertainment.
