Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

That is a great response!

My boys would just say I forgot to check or I checked but I don’t remember but my mom is making me to take it again answer. :))
They just seem to share freely to close friends. Boys are simpler.

Funny S19 hasn’t mentioned anything about PSAT. I’m not sure it is on his radar. He was at a soccer showcase out of town for Thanksgiving so it was quiet at home with just 1 of the 3 kids and H and I. S19 did email back and forth with coaches and a few came out to watch him play. But I’ve been taking a break from thinking about his college search.

D16 seems to be doing well in college, and enjoyed just relaxing over the holiday, listening to books on tape and drawing. She declared a desire to finally get her license (at age 20) and H had her chauffeur him around for the week. I’m terrible, I never force her to drive.

S19 is taking the SAT tomorrow. Has he prepared… of course not…

So bummed missed out on the PSAT hack. guess both scores will be coming around the same time.

I wish I could have seen my S19’s score as well…not that I expect NMF but simply because I despise waiting for things I know I could have. I guess schools will have access on Monday, 12/4 and your DS could ask for his score.

Good luck to the 19ners taking the test tomorrow! :)>-

Echoing the good luck for the SAT test-takers!

S19 is looking at his first (and last) ACT practice test tomorrow so has some clue what will be on next week’s test. In hindsight, I wish he were signed up to take tomorrow’s SAT instead, but oh well.

Kiddo sits for the ACT next weekend. We had agreed that today is ACT study day. We had breakfast and kiddo went downstairs, supposedly to study. I came down half an hour later to do laundry and heard talking from his room. I opened the door to find him watching a youtube video of a woman unpacking a crate full of random cosmetics she bought on ebay. This was the Incredibly Important thing he was doing before getting down to studying.

I want Santa to note on his Nice List that I neither raised my voice nor cut off his internet. Oh, but it was tempting.

I may, however, have gotten more than a bit sarcastic and hurt his wittle fee-fees.

I don’t want him to grow up too soon, but dammit, I wish he’d grow up.

Today is also an ACT study day here. You can tell because S19 is still asleep despite my attempts to remind him that he was going to eat breakfast and start it by 9. He was also going to do homework last night to clear time in his day for the ACT, but then he noticed his ukulele in the corner of his room and that was that. Ukulele time!

If he doesn’t start it by noon, he’ll say it’s too late to do it today, so it’s looking like there’s a good chance that he’ll be seeing the test for the first time on test day.

Good luck to the SAT test takers and ACT preppers today. Heading out in a few minutes to pick son19 up from his SAT exam. Our school didn’t offer it today, so we had to go to the rival school nearby. Son19 was happy to wear his varsity soccer jacket to the test in the hostile environment, ha.

Son19 only did a bit of prep work for this test, and probably won’t get much prep work for ACT next week either, so it will be good to use as a benchmark for where he stands and what he needs to study for on the next one. I’m pretty confident he will not be 1 and done.

S reports he thought the SATs were so easy. Hmmmm

DD took the SAT this am as well, DH is picking her up right now. She is also taking the ACT next weekend. Not expecting much of an improvement from the Oct/Nov tests. She will really study over the next couple of months and retake both tests one more time I am guessing. She needs to improve her ACT by 3 points or her SAT by 90 points. This was easier with D17!

son19 is hme from his SAT test. He said his test was easier in the math area than the PSAT but harder in a reading/English section because he had some cruddy paragraph about nuclear fission and he didn’t quite comprehend everything ( he thought).

We’ll see, as the last time he took a practice test he proclaimed he finished with a perfect math score, and I can tell you that he did not come close to attaining the perfect math score, ha.

I think in the SAT he’ll probably end up doing pretty well in Math, but not so great in English and will need to study that area to improve. Then he’ll take it again and hope superscoring works to his favor.

I’d love it if he just scored a decent enough score on the ACT next week so he could move on to other things.

My d thought the reading was pretty hard. She really didn’t need to worry too much about math because of superscoring and her previous math was so high. She said there were a couple of tough science passages that she thinks she ended up ok on. She ran out of time with a different passage though because of how long it was taking to figure out one of those science ones (I think the nuclear fission) and had to rush through another. Anyway, she made it through. We already talked about it and if she decides to shoot for it again, she will wait until August. She’s really only doing it to improve chances for scholarships and there are other things she can spend her time on for now.

I’m proud to report after this morning’s procrastination, kiddo managed to get through one full ACT practice test, then we sat down and looked over the answers he got wrong and discussed what the correct answer would be and how he should have filled it out. His raw scores were 34 science, 31 reading, 30 writing and 26 math. Room for improvement before he’s where we want him, but I don’t think it’s bad for the first full practice test?

Anyhow, I was just so glad to be done that I let him talk me into an afternoon showing of Murder on the Orient Express. It was a great antidote to all the day’s drama.

Kiddo thinks that the math score is so low because he hasn’t really dealt with those concepts since middle school. I’m thinking we’ll see where this score lands, then maybe rustle up some tutoring before the next sitting.

@ninakatarina that is good your S took the practice and got fine scores. Remember, the National average for the ACT is something like 20.5. In MA, we have the highest average and I think it’s around 25. 25 is close to my son’s HS average, so really if your S is getting scores like that now after 1 practice test I wouldn’t sweat it.

My older son ended up doing pretty well on the ACT, but the science section was his Achilles heel until his final attempt in which Science became the best score. Superscoring is great!!

My kid eventually woke up and took his practice ACT test and got a 33 composite, which is just slightly better than his SAT score. Pleasant surprise - I think I expected him to get more like a 30 since he wasn’t familiar with the test.

I’m hopeful that it wasn’t a fluke and he can repeat that next week since he won’t have the cats periodically sprawling out on his test booklet and his parents making noise. If he doesn’t top his SAT score, I think he’ll retake the SAT since he “likes” it more.

Out of the blue DS decided to add Columbia to the list of reaches. I’m not sure why we hadn’t looked at it before, NYC would seem to be a good fit for my kid. Anyhow, it’s on the list now. If kiddo puts together a decent next semester, decent set of essays and some very good test scores, I’ve decided that I’m willing to pay for another low percentage crapshoot.

I’m so jealous of all of you that have kids interested in talking about colleges. My S still isn’t there. I know we have plenty of time so I’m not pushing him yet but it is hard for me as I love planning and talking about this. My older D was home over Thanksgiving and she and I actually spent time talking about what should be on his list. It was nice to talk to someone about it.

The biggest issue right now is that our instate match school, UMass Lowell, is falling off the list. Our neighbor across the street is there now as a freshman, really dislikes it and wants to transfer out. He and S are good friends, very similar in interests and academic strengths so S is now convinced that it is not a good place for him. I’ll admit after talking to the kid’s mother, I tend to agree, but now we have a problem of finding an instate school that we know he can get into and that does fit him. I think UMass Amherst would be a good fit for a humanities/social science type of kid like him but it is a reach. All the other instate campuses are more career oriented with programs in engineering, business, nursing, education, etc. They don’t seem at all designed for an undecided humanities/social science kid.

I’m holding off on pushing conversations with S until after we get the PSAT score back and I can see if he really is in the range I’m thinking. S did tell me last night that he received an email awhile back telling him to set up a College Board account so he could see his score so I guess we will be doing that this week.

I wasn’t going to do it but I had a weak moment. I wrote an email to the guidance counselor begging her to share the PSAT score with me if she learns it this week.

@ninakatarina my son has also expressed in Columbia, because his best friend is convinced that is where he will be going. My son19 stands about a .005% chance of admission there, so I have not talked about it much with him.
He likes it because it’s in NYC and for some reason both of my kids are fascinated with that city.

I don’t think my son19 is really a likely Ivy candidate, even if his test scores come in within the mid 50%. He’s really best suited for one of the technical schools, and I think he knows this.
