Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

I meant son19 is 1/2 way thru term 2 and is doing well. He has another 1/2 a semester of term 2 to go and then mid terms late Jan early Feb.

S19 will be done today and off until Jan 3rd.
S17 will be home Tuesday and off until Jan 16th. College does seem easier
S17 did slack off quite a bit in Junior and Senior years (during the most important periods! :(( ) He was however surrounded by plenty of Mt. Fuji crowd though. His school was pretty competitive, so I am sure lots of kids were having daily melt-downs. Even if we put no pressure on the kids at home, kids themselves are under a lot of pressure due to what is happening at school.

This is probably the first time I did not wake up to check the test score at 3AM. See how much more relaxed I am second time around. :))
Although I remembered the release date, I forgot it was today. S19 texted his score from school.
His EBRW improved by 80 pt, but Math went down by 40. 8-|

Improvement was totally in Writing section. It seems that he made lots of silly mistakes in ā€œheart of algebra.ā€
He did problems in Erica Meltzer’s ā€œThe Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar Workbookā€ (it has 6 Writing sections) during Thanksgiving break. He got a perfect Writing score 40, yay!

We could call it done, but he wants to try March test.
I think we are at a point of diminishing return. We will call it done afterward no matter the outcome. Three is a good number, and March is a lot better than June! (S17 was done with June ACT testing, a 34 overall.)

Hooray for the perfect writing score @payn4ward! I think my son would burst into flames or something if I put a grammar book in front of him! The ACT grammar must be a lot easier because that was his best sub-score when he took a practice test.

He wants to take one more SAT no matter what the outcome of the ACT, but we’ll see… Since he’s doing a re-scheduled test (moved by one week), I guess I should expect to see scores one week later? (she asks hopefully).

So your son had a net gain on this test @payn4ward ??
That’s good, improving is always better, and with suoerscoring improving the lower section is more desirable!
Congrats!

Yes, net gain of 40 pt since October!
And his superscore reached our goal and will meet any merit criteria.
Thank you!
Hope RightKid2 did well in last 2 tests! [-O<

Good luck to all kiddos getting scores today and next few days! :)>-

That’s a big relief @payn4ward, your son must feel great. Even if he takes it again, at least the pressure is sort of off.

No scores back in yet. I’d love to see them though. We won’t get any need based financial aid, so if his scores come in good enough for some merit aid it would be fantastic. He’s going to have to improve on the English sections to improve his chances for $$.

Hope everyone gets good news the next few days!

My D19’s sitting for the 10 Feb ACT, and the 10 Mar SAT.

ETA: Aaaaaand I just looked at the posting history of the individual I was responding to, and flagged them as a spammer. Oh well, so it goes. Still worth asking: Who else’s kids are sitting for the February and March test dates as a first-time ACT/SAT test-taker? Anyone waiting til the early summer ones?

DS19 is taking the ACT for the first time during school in Feb. He has taken the SAT in November

sat was a bit disappointing. S swore he got a 100 on the math section. Somehow a 750 is not a 100. The ā€œverbalā€ section was just ok. he did well enough to get full tuition at a safety school though

D19 got almost the same score. Verbal actually was exactly the same at the October sitting. I’m glad it didn’t go down since she thought the reading was much more difficult this time. And I’m glad we had already decided on a long break before she tries again, if she even wants to do so.

D19 is planning on taking it in April as the Feb. falls right during Spring musical. She has already taken the Dec ACT so waiting on those scores (hopefully next week!). Seeking merit so I’m just gearing her up for multiple test dates at this point. I unfortunately did not sign her up to take the writing portion so she will have to take it again anyways for a couple of the schools she wants to apply to…hoping we will not need to go into June or Sept for testing, there will be enough to do!

I think my S19 is going to take the 2/10 test. Now to figure out prep.

DS was supposed to take ACT last weekend, postponed due to snow and we can’t make tomorrow’s test date, so he’s taking the ACT on Feb 10. The whole school system takes the SAT in early April, paid for by the county so kiddo might as well take it. He’s putting his faith in the ACT because math isn’t such a big part of it.

He confessed to me this evening that he’s not doing well in calculus and is afraid that he’s going to get a C on the year, his GPA will fall into the toilet and he’ll be reduced to only being able to get into community college. He goes in for extra tutoring, he thinks he has the concepts, then they leave his brain 5 minutes after class ends. I, personally, also hit a wall at high school calculus so I know how he feels. He is running a B on this semester but he says he ā€˜knows’ that he’s going to fail next semester and the one after that.

I plotted out the next year on my calendar and oh my god we’re busy. So much to do, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed myself. I am so glad I started the college visits early, I don’t know where I would be if we had to handle all this testing and test prep at the same time as road trips.

Sat came back and son went up a smidge on both sections compared to psat. He can still go up a teeny bit in math if he has a good day, but he could really improve his overall score with a solid result in English section.
I think it’s a good solid first score, and seeing he wants to study engineering his math score is solid for most schools.
So he said he’ll put some focus on English prep work for the next one in March.

Now we’ll see how he does with ACT results soon.

What do you guys think? --> my D19 hasn’t taken the ACT nor prepared in any way for it yet. She will have extra time when she does take it. She has very VERY little spare time due to theater tech being very time consuming, and of course APUSH is famously a time suck as well. So, I’m thinking, sign her up for June and let her study/take a drop-in ACT prep class when she can in a lower stress way. Then take it again in September?

We don’t know where she’s applying yet but probably NYU and UCSB, however, a school may appear that requires every test score be sent in. Also her older sister took the ACT twice in June and September. But my concern is that so many other kids either have taken it already or will have already done so by June. What think?

Late tests are fine. ACT even added a July test. June, July, and September should be plenty of time to get her target score. October is possible also, but that’s pushing things a little late.

The fact that others have taken the test is 100% irrelevant to her.

S19 claims that his SAT math scores went down because it was too easy. He says he can do better on a harder test. :))

He plans to take February ACT for the first time but has taken SAT two times already.

Thank you @gusmahler. And @payn4ward – darn those too easy tests and the resulting lower scores!

@JenJenJenJen there is no reason to rush through all of the tests. I am pretty sure my son will take some in the Fall of Senior year. The kids can mature a lot during Junior year and they also learn a lot too, which can help next Fall.

@payn4ward lol at easy test.

LOL, @payn4ward :))

@JenJenJenJen , my D refused to take any test before she felt she is prepared. The catch was that she was NOT preparing for the test.

The school year gets little too busy to find time for extra tests. June and September sound good. If you feel earlier is better, then how about after the spring break? Can she find some time for the prep during spring break?
