Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

@liska21 is UVM off the list then? It seemed to do well in the A versus B game

I hear you on UW. Not one if our 4 kids has even applied. S19 will although I do think it is too large for him, and in his case not a safety. We had some surprising wait lists last year at our HS.

for me, this is #4! this is the end of the tunnel and where the princess lands is likely important to where dh and I move sooo with that in mind, california might just be a great idea.

Taking a minute to say hi as we’re beginning this process for D19…hoping what I learned from mistakes with D10 will make this round less stressful! For example, I learned nine years ago that the GPAs calculated by the high school were weighted. Still the same nine years later, so after a discussion with the guidance counselor, I now have D19’s unweighted GPA, which had to be hand-calculated. This should make for a much better list of schools. Onward!

@Kona2012 and @amandakayak:
ā€œAre you saying ā€˜cool’ to the school?ā€

ā€œAre you saying ā€˜it’s sure for me’ to the university?ā€
"Are you saying ā€œā€˜to the best of my knowledge, it’s my favorite college.ā€™ā€

And a big welcome howdy to @bettzke1!

Hi everyone. Finally popping on to say hi too. I’ve been lurking for a couple of days. Just kind of starting with S19, and I’m losing my mind. He spent a great deal of last Fall prepping for the SAT and he did great. I figured we would start looking at colleges after that, but he’s been so resistant. I don’t know if it’s because his Dad has been stressing it so much, or if he has emotional reasons for not wanting to do the search yet, but now that I’ve finally dived in full force, it’s making me crazy. A month ago we toured Georgetown, and then he went to Europe on a school trip during Spring break. Aside from driving through Bucknell’s campus this summer, GT is the only college tour we’ve done. And now we’ve got AP test prep and prom coming up.

After reading CC for a couple weeks, I’m now on the same page as my ex-husband in the belief that S19 really should be thinking about early decision since he is a pretty high stats kid with what my ex calls ā€œthe bright shiny problemā€ - he’s attracted to the most selective schools. Ugh. So, S19 and his Dad will be flying out to Chicago the week after next to do a one-day tour of U Chicago and Northwestern. And I’m seriously considering kidnapping him after his last AP exam in May to do an upstate NY circuit. But I’m going out of my mind, and I think my ex is about to burst an artery, because S19 just doesn’t want to talk about it. Meanwhile, I’m obsessing.

Anyway. Thanks for letting me vent. Looking forward to taking this journey with you all. Seems like just yesterday I was on Storknet sharing the pregnancy journey with a bunch of lovely moms. Time flies doesn’t it!?

Welcome, @Trixy34 and @bettzke1 to our chatty little thread. I think some other parents have reluctant juniors. Someone had the idea of touring a college relatively close by with a group of friends, saying that this is not necessarily on the list but you’re looking for what kind of college the kid might like (urban, rural, big, small, tech, LAC, etc.)

But this is the time of life that they go uncommunicative at the worst times, isn’t it?

A hello from a mom of 3, class of '16, class of '18 and class of '21:

I am so proud of my daughter!

She applied to a nice mix of schools in September. When the results were in, she wasn’t happy with her choices-- denied by her favorite, and visits to the other schools, and the kids she met on the Accepted Students group chats simply didn’t leave her feeling that she had found her school.

So she sent out a few more apps in January.

She is now thrilled to death to be attending a school she had never heard of in September. She has ā€œfound her peopleā€ and can’t wait to start this new phase of her life.

I’m so happy that she had the resilience to pick herself back up (admittedly after a brief pity party or two) and find the option that would make her happy.

Just wanted to show you, and perhaps mention to your kids: there’s more than one ā€œright wayā€ to find your place.

Hello fellow CC parents!
I have been lurking for about 1 month and decided it is time to let you now I am here with an only S19.

Thanks to soooo many for the supportive words you have shared with and the D/S18 who have been posting their college decision and struggles. Knowing there is a place for all of us (kids, parents, guardians) to share, cheer, commiserate) is helpful.

@bjkmom I’ve followed along on your other thread about your daughter. So happy for her! And both of you have been a great example to this whole community.

Sleet, freezing rain, snow, mixed precipitation, blowing winds. It’s gonna be a great day for college tours!! Wish us luck!

Luck! We have a cool, grey, windy, spattering rain kind of day here. However, this could be the perfect conditions, if your kid likes a college in nasty weather conditions then you know it’s the right place! And poor weather will deter other people from coming on college tours so you’ll have a more personalized experience. Is that bright side enough?

@RightCoaster good luck! This will be a true test to see if your easy going S truly likes any school! Snowing here again. This is not normal weather and it’s freaking me out. Track meet on Wed. I hope things clear up by then as we’ve got kids trying to hit some PRs this spring and last week’s meet was cancelled. Only so many weeks left in the season.

Cold weather cannot deter me. But hot weather will put me off.

Thanks @ninakatarina. We are outside Philly, so I was hoping to get him to a school this weekend, but he had already made plans with friends for the middle of the day, and then Sunday he had a lot of school work to do. He’s been very reluctant to look at schools nearby because he says he wants to try someplace new and get away from mom and dad. Then last night at dinner, he said, ā€œyou know, Penn is really nice - it might not be so bad to be close so I could get home in case of an emergency.ā€ Just what we need - another below 10 acceptance rate school on the list! Ha! Would love him to tour Swarthmore, but he’s been dragged there every June since he was 6 for his little sister’s dance recitals. He doesn’t want anything to do with it! Lol.

@bjkmom - Congrats on your daughter’s decision! That’s wonderful! All the best to her on this exciting adventure!

Hi bettzke and woozybear!

Good luck @RightCoaster. Where are you today?

I like your positive thinking @ninakatarina!
@Trixy34 we are going to visit Tufts
congrats @bjkmom
@homerdog track is cancelled today, meet on Weds. I don’t think we’ll be seeing any PRs. Fortunately son had a good meet last week and already qualified for state meet in multiple events, so he was happy. Now just trying for records.

Welcome new posters!

I live near the start of the Boston Marathon, can you imagine running 26 miles in this slop? Brutal. Good luck to the brave runners, I can’t even fathom attempting that today.

@Trixy34 LOL at kids’ decision processes; they seem to change their minds on a whim. Maybe you’ll get lucky and he’ll show Swat some interest. It’s been tough for us to get to tour schools while they’re in session and I’ve given up because of D’s schedule. She can concentrate on studying for APs and June’s SAT and then we’ll head off for the last few summer tours. We (or I) are aiming for early applications in the fall.

My philosophy has always been ā€œif you like the school in crappy weather, you really the school!ā€

Back in the fall, we did drive-bys of Bloomsburg and Bucknell. And then S19 attended Creative Writing Day at Susquehanna University. It was cold and rainy. Leaves on the ground everywhere. Bloomsburg and Bucknell looked okay. But for some reason, the Susquehanna campus looked beautiful. Before we even got out of the car, S19 loved the campus.

The big change of heart in our house, as of yesterday, is that S19 is not even sure he wants to bother applying to his commuter option, our local private college. This is quite a change from back in the fall when he insisted that he was going to live at home and attend the local private college. It was actually the aforementioned visit to Susquehanna that made him realize that going away to school, even if only an hour or two from home, was something he could do. Now, it is what he wants to do.

Welcome to the new posters!

Welcome to everyone new!

@DCNatFan We visited Elon last week and really liked it. The pros were the the experience based curriculum*, the beautiful campus, the size, the easyish to get to location (for us) and the fact that I think it would be a safety for D with a good chance of merit and possibly the honors program. *I cant remember if that is how they described the curriculum but they put a big emphasis on experience not just classroom learning. To graduate you have to do at least two of five things - internship, study abroad, research, volunteer or leadership. Out kids do a lot more than two and the school seems to really help the students find the right fit for them. We also liked that there is a January term that is not mandatory - I think it is a great way to get in more study abroad without committing an entire semester.

The cons were that it is not a prestigious name (and it is surrounded by prestigious names - Duke, Wake, Chapel Hill), we worry that it might not be challenging enough and D is worried that being in a small town might get old pretty quickly. Although I will say that the town you can walk to was small but 15 minutes away is Burlington which is a typical strip mall town with everything you could possibly need from Target to Dicks to Chick Fil A.

@RightCoaster Ugh - sorry about your Patriots Day weather! I was just explaining Patriots Day to my son on the way to school - he was jealous the MA kids get the day off! I told him how every year we would go to the marathon route in our town and hand out oranges and dixie cups of water - we thought it was so much fun. I bet there aren’t many spectators today, :frowning: Good luck at Tufts, I used to live about two blocks away on the Somerville side when I was in grad school.

Wow - apparently classes are cancelled at Binghamton University today because there was a stabbing there last night and the student was killed. He was a 19 year old, first year engineering student. The suspect is still at large!
It is soooo scary sometimes. Bingahmton is one of my son’s top choices, if he can get over the cold weather, because of the strength of their research opportunities and their Neuroscience program.

@Kona2012 I saw the news about the stabbing at Binghamton too. It made me feel slightly better as a parent to read that the police do not think it was a random act, but so tragic.
