Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

Congrats on the early acceptances and to @ninakatarina on the lead in the play!

I wish S19 would get more mail from the schools he’s actually applying to, but eh, they’re mostly big schools. He did find a fee waiver for one of them buried in his emails so that’s one out of 7.

He has the most email from CWRU, but has a weird mix of selective private schools (including half of the Ivy league), VA privates, Pennsylvania PASSHE schools, WPI/RPI/RIT, and some scattered directional state universities.

@homerdog Hey, I’ve added a new school to Twin B’s list. I am wondering if it is too much of a reach. Can you elaborate on the above 75% - Naviance prediction? Our tiny HS doesn’t have Naviance and I am wondering if I’m understanding the math correctly (not likely, I write - no math skills).

—These are schools where he is above the 75th percentile and the two acceptance rates are 20% and 31%—

Congrats on all the acceptances (and the lead in the Fall play)! So exciting!

@homerdog - yes, it sounds like an LAC is the perfect choice for your ds - why are they so darned expensive? Another concern I have about the small expensive LACs is the pressure at the end of 4 years to get that investment to pay off, and the resulting pull to get a job in finance or consulting. Of course, it’s fine for someone who wants to go into those fields, but don’t want ds to feel that pressure (though I wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up in consulting).

@TwinMom2023 Above the 75th percentile for SAT scores for the accepted students last year. You can find the 25th and 75th percentile scores for ACT and SAT on any school’s Common Data Set. You can find the acceptance rates there too. Those are not Naviance related stats. When I mention Naviance, I’m referring to the fact that, when I look at kids from our school who applied to S19’s schools, I can see if it’s likely he will be admitted. In some cases, our school has a good track record with a school and that school tends to accept a large percentage of our kids even if they aren’t at the top of top of the school’s stats.

@Trixy34 I have been doing A LOT of deep diving into career centers at the LACs on the list. Some are indeed better at helping the kids find consulting or finance jobs. Some seem to really focus on education type or research type jobs after undergrad.

Thank you. I sometimes look at number of kids from NC because somewhere in my brain I have hope that the geographical bump is real for some of these NE schools. One can dream.

Like all of you, my D has been getting a ton of mailers via snail mail. She wants to pursue Environmental Studies so a lot of the mailers just piss her off. Most of them are from colleges she is not interested in…so wasteful.

We have been saving all the snail mailings for a giant bon fire in the spring.

Has anyone tried to use the College Board website lately? D19 is trying to go ahead and send all her schools her scores, just to get a box checked off. Two days ago it was very buggy and slow and she could only get 3 schools done. Today trying again…“system error” prevents the loading of any score recipients. Wha? I’m surprised this is this hard. Another reason why we’re building in month-long cushions into this process.

While Case Western is on our long list, I find some of their emails annoying and borderline harassing. We open their emails, and i guess they are trying to get the students’ attention, but I think it’s a bit much. Especially so early in the season to be impatient for an application submission. Share information about the school, but don’t push the timeline so aggressively.

“While Case Western is on our long list, I find some of their emails annoying and borderline harassing.”

If you get in it’s even worse. Literally an email a day. Very offputting. Not sure whether this is a cause or a result of their relatively low yield.

Swarthmore emails have been pretty relentless… to me. I get multiple iterations of the exact same email each week. It’s a clever little note and I enjoyed reading it the first time, but it’s beginning to pall and I regret giving them my contact information when we visited.

They’ve finally announced when college night is, next Thursday. I got a note of apology from the counselor, who said that because they moved offices this summer she was behind her usual schedule.

Yesterday’s drama about the drama department is mostly resolved. A few kids are still grumbly, but most of them are getting excited about the characters and the mood of the play.

Well, my Y2K baby is 18 today. And we will barely see him. He had XC practice at 6am. Then there is an away football game and he’s on the marching band. So he won’t be back tonight until late. I decorated the inside of his car last night as a surprise and sent him off at 5:45am.

Hard to believe that he will be in college and away from home at this time next year. There is a bit of dust in my eye…

Congrats, on 18 @InfiniteWaves! Mine recently turned 17. I found there was a great deal of maturity between those years with my older son.

We are on the Case Western mailing list too, and boy do they send out a lot of info in both print and email form. it seems like an interesting school.

Son19 got nominated for Science National Honor Society at our school, so we can add that to common app. We’lll take any sort of award of this point, keep them coming

Well, looks like we are adding the first college acceptance to the turning-18 birthday excitement today! S19 has been accepted into Shippensburg University. This is the academic/financial safety, actual-PA-state-school on his list.

The total surprise is that he was awarded a small merit scholarship. Was not expecting that at all.

This will make waiting for the next few months to pass much less nerve-wracking. Really happy for him.

Congratulations @InfiniteWaves - sounds like a wonderful birthday for your son!

Congrats to your son @Infinitewaves!

My kiddo is 17 today and is definitely not getting a college acceptance. Just cupcakes and another bass guitar.

Congratulations and Happy birthday to your son @InfiniteWaves

@InfiniteWaves Last night’s bedtime conversation (we have a D’17 and D’19):
DH: What’s it going to be like next year when they’re both gone?
Me: Kind of like this summer when she was at camp.
DH: I don’t think I like that.

I try to mention these types of conversations to the girls because he doesn’t always show that softer side to them.

With S19’s job plus activities, we don’t see him much during the school week. He’s also usually working 9 hours on Saturday… husband and I are calling this time “empty nest training wheels”. We’ll miss him like crazy, but I have to admit, going out to eat with just the two of us is SO much cheaper lol.
