@momtogkc Ooooh! I love hearing about St Lawrence! It’s a top contender for my S19. We’re visiting for the first time in a couple weeks. I’m very impressed by the retention rates and 4 year graduation rates. He’s very outdoorsy, loves to snow board and camp, and wants to pursue environmental education.
St. Lawrence was Kat’s dream school in 10 Things I Hate About You.
Which probably isn’t enough to sway anyone to choose it, but every time I see it mentioned that factoid begs me to type it out.
@mom2twogirls that is my D’s favorite movie. I’m fairly sure she didn’t realize it was a real school- it would have at least merited a look based on that alone. Ha!
I just saw on FB that it’s been 20 years since that movie came out. I can’t believe Julia Stiles is old enough to have played a teenager 20 years ago.
Ugh. Just watched a clip and it was Sarah Lawrence.
This is almost as bad a mistake as when I thought Miley Cyrus was singing about a rainbow instead of a wrecking ball.
Darn. Well, I guess this is now something I learned today.
A clip for anyone who needs to check for themselves. https://youtu.be/rG_b_Ems3W8
@mom2twogirls I asked my D after our last exchange and she corrected me already. She knew the name (along with the rest of the script?), but didn’t realize it was a real school- I was right about that!
I am consoling myself for the error by noting that they sound similar, particularly when the name is being shouted loudly in excitement. And they are both NY schools (since we know part of the draw for Kat -and the hesitation by her dad- was that it was on the other side of the country).
@mom2twogirls - I never understood what Miley Cyrus was saying either ?
I guarantee if you listen to it now, you will swear she is singing about a rainbow. And really, I prefer a partner to come in like a rainbow anyway. Much better than an angsty wrecking ball.
@elena13 Congratulations to your son on his acceptances to Vandy & Brown! He has some fantastic options!
@homerdog Congrats to your son, he’s had great success!
@wisteria100 Congratulations to your daughter on her decision to attend Amherst!
@coolweather Congratulations to your daughter on UC Berkeley!
@wb176220 First, Congratulations to your son on his acceptances! He has some great options. I am sorry he is devastated about the denials and waitlists, but you must know that the schools you listed have extremely low acceptance rates. No doubt there were many, many great kids denied and waitlisted at those schools. It is not a reflection of his worth. And while I’m sure they are fine schools, I am sure he has a bright future wherever he ends up.
@rmsdad Congratulations to your daughter on her acceptance to Dartmouth, as well as Wesleyan, Ginnell, and Whitman!! Very exciting!
@drewsmom17 Congratulations to your son on Lehigh!
@MAandMEmom Congrats to your son on all those acceptances!! So many options!
@momof2atl Congratulations to your daughter on her decision to attend U of Miami! We visited that one just last week…beautiful campus. (And then my D19 was waitlisted.)
Finally caught up again. Love celebrating the acceptances! In case I missed any…
Congratulations!!
I am so glad I found this group! Grateful for all the comments and happy for all accepted kids! My son clearly overdid it with his 33 applications, most of which were top schools. He was set for some heartbreak and was understandably devastated when he did not get his ED/EA and then no Ivy.
However, he does have great options (and I didn’t mention UMD CS Honors with merit scholarship and in-state tuition) and either GT or UT Austin will be good for him. Not sure about UCLA as it is the opposite coast with no clear benefit over these two closer schools. Not too many options to choose from is a blessing in a way as we don’t have to make too many visits.
Now we have to focus on the positive and I have already quickly arranged for UT Austin visit this weekend. Hope we both feel better after that.
Finally, this is my oldest son so I need this experience
THANK YOU!
I’ve been hearing stories about incoming freshman said that “I only signed up for the fb group.” These teens are so busy with instagram and snapchat.
“To the class of 2023, I would start using facebook for college purpose like checking school facebook events, student group facebook page, and form a study group. From my personal experience, I find it very useful. A lot of students think that they don’t need facebook in college because they don’t care. The school facebook pages and facebook groups has tons of resources. Students will need to use facebook throughout their college career because sometimes if students need to buy textbooks or selling tickets or looking for department resources.”
@wb176220 Your son has great options! Report back after the UT Austin visit. My D16 was in a similar position and everything turned around after going to accepted student days. She realized she loved her top 2 choices from the schools where she was admitted. Hopefully your son has a similar experience.
It’s weird, I discovered CC back at the end of 2017, while looking for info on National Merit, but only really started participating mid 2018, as my kid started putting applications together. There was a lot of good info, but I never really got to utilize it, since my kid’s process was over almost as soon as it began.
However, I have used some of the very good advice I found here to help some of my kid’s friends. Based on the advice from here, one dear friend of my D, who thought that she had no possibility to get into any college after being rejected from her first choice college EA, is now choosing between acceptances with very good FA at Beloit, Knox, DePaul, and Iowa State, as well as an acceptance to UIC. So she does not know you, but I thank you all in her name.
All decisions are in. Within the last week, D was waitlisted at UMiami and Tulane (both after being deferred EA), and was denied from UMaryland. UMiami and Tulane take very, very few from the waitlist, but D was happy that it was a waitlist, not a denial. UMaryland hurt because D had applied EA, but GC sent transcript late, so was pushed to RD round. She applied to a limited enrollment program, so can’t help but think that EA probably would have helped.
D has some favorites among the acceptances. Not dwelling on the ones that got away. We’ll be visiting Clemson on Monday, and then I’m hoping for a decision next week.
Here’s the status…
Accepted: James Madison, Ohio State, URI (w merit), Clemson, UMass, UConn
Waitlist: UMiami (deferred EA), Tulane (deferred EA)
Denied: Northeastern, UMichigan (deferred EA), UMaryland (deferred EA)
Attending: Stay tuned…
XPosted to the Parents of HS Class of 2019 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA thread
@Atyraulove My boss’s daughter graduated from St. Lawrence last year. Very outdoorsy kid…led tours on the Appalachian Trail during summer, etc. She is workin for an environmental education group in Maine now full time. St. Lawrence helped make this possible…the right classes, etc. Best of luck to your S19 and his decision.
Success in the next step is what we hope for after all the work our kiddos have done. And look at what they’ve accomplished!
Most of all, be proud of their spirit-- to allow schools to assess them, rank them, decline-defer-waitlist-accept them- usually sight unseen.
@momof2atl Congrats on U. Miami! That’s great news!
Thanks @momzilla2D! You are always so good with your summaries and including everyone! Good luck during your D’s decision-making. She has some wonderful options.
Congrats to all others and best of luck during this time of decisions. Your diligence and devotion to helping your kids get started in their next phase of life is impressive and will be remembered.
My son is thrilled he got into UT Austin and can’t wait for fall. Hope you have a good trip. If you’ve never been to Austin, be sure to check out the city as well as the school. It’s a great place to be a student.
I’m very late to this discussion, as I am fairly new to CC and only now discovered this thread. So many kind people here; makes you feel good to read it.
Congratulations to all those great acceptances. I hope that the kids facing disappointments regarding their admissions are standing a little taller today and able to pick a place that they will grow to love.
Our son graduated a year early, last May, but is originally a Class of 23 kid. He spent his gap year figuring out what he wants to do next and working on his art. It’s been a great experience for us and I’d recommend a gap year to anyone who wants more transition time to college or - as our son did - genuinely needs a break from school.
Denied - Deep Springs, which wasn’t a shocker but we all really thought he’d make it to the second round of their admissions process/interviews
Denied - Rice - again, not a shocker, but worth a wild card application
Waitlisted - Pratt, though he was offered a spot at their Utica campus. The Utica campus offer is a cool deal and a great opportunity for some but it doesn’t suit our son’s desires.
Accepted - University of Texas College of Fine Arts (small merit scholarship and a very affordable school); School of Visual Arts (small scholarship); Parsons/New School (generous scholarship); Rhode Island School of Design (wish-it-could-be-larger-but-not-tiny scholarship).
We’re going to RISD’s admitted students day and then hash out on the plane home whether it is worth the $$ or whether he’ll go to UT, which has an excellent program but not quite the draw of RISD.
Lots for all of us to think about!
