Good luck @me29034 . Better to find out now .
@me29034 D wrote a letter to the school she already had a housing deposit submitted to since they didnāt offer another way to turn them down. The instructions said āin writing.ā We havenāt seen the refund yet, but they acknowledged her letter, so hopefully it is on the way.
Dās final two are both really great deals. She wants to combine all the great stuff from one with the great stuff from the other and make a hybrid mix she can attend instead.
@drewsmom17 Thatās funny because after the winter weāve just had, my D crossed off any schools that have roughly the same weather as where we live. No way does she want more snow, ice, and cold.
@cakeisgreat we have 4. All attended different schools in different states. Well, technically not quite yet but once S19 starts school it will be officially 4 in 4.
Itās fine. Really. Even if they were in the same state, breaks etc may not be the same, they all have their own thing going on, etc. And besides, it makes for interesting parent visits! Unless of course they are in your state, we went 1/4 there. LOL!
Well, we had our first milestone of the approach of graduation. My D had her last ever regular season gymnastics meet yesterday. She surprised everyone, including herself, by winning bars. She also won beam and two silver medals. It was an amazing cap to a turbulent season in her sport. We are all looking forward to the post season, though I will definitely shed a tear or two at regionals. Sheās off to visit fiends in CA next weekend, but then the prom, graduation, states, and regionals will speed by, and sheāll be in Italy most of the summer. Itās almost like I miss her already, and Iām glad weāve been spending extra time together.
As for roommates, sheās hoping for a single (and I think something like 70% or freshman at her school get them). Otherwise sheāll let the school handle the luck of the draw and hope for the best! They donāt handle any of this type of stuff until the end of June, I think.
@milgymfam - Wow! Good for her! Both of my children were involved in HS sports - I will miss the games for sure. Good luck during post season!
@drewsmom17 those are 2 good choices, and very unique from one another. Iāve had friends go to Lehigh and I know kids currently at RIT.
I think Lehigh is a very good school, it has a solid reputation, well regarded research university, and offers a good collegiate experience. I think it is typically thought of as a more traditional environment than RIT. When I think of Lehigh I think of nice, smart kids that are more mainstream. The only kids I know at RIT were more outside of the box robotics and science kids, but that doesnāt mean the whole place is filled with kids like that. I think youād find RIT definitely skews towards that side though vs Lehigh which skews more towards the mainstream ( for lack of a better term). Leigh has a very nice campus with lots of nice looking buildings, and I think RIT is voted ugliest campus on some list. Lehigh is closer to major cities too, although Rochester ( not a major city) is just down the road from RIT. Rochester has some city stuff to it, but itās not like NYC, or Philly which are closer to Lehigh.
Your son might be like my son who could probably fit into either environment. Thatās good. There should be less worry he gets to either one of them and hates it. Heāll probably adjust to either place. I think my son wouldāve picked RIT over Lehigh if he had a choice, as it offers a mix of kids, good studies, good facilities, co-op. He doesnāt care about frats, college football, traditions etc.
We were on the mailing for RIT and my son liked looking at the brochures they sent. They have some innovative stuff going on there and the co-op program is something I like. Iām a big fan of a kid getting some work experience in while they are young so they can better understand if they like their field of study. If they donāt like the job they can change focus. Employers out of college also like to see real work experience on a resume, and having a referral source is fantastic.
Itās too bad he canāt visit either place to help make up his mind, but I honestly donāt think he can go wrong either way.
I think heād be able to adjust at either school and enjoy his time there.
Does he have a favorite color or mascot?LOL. I think RIT is a tiger and orange. I think Lehigh is brown right?
@drewsmom17 The menu plan is a mac & cheese bar. DD is well known for her pasta habit. Weāll have a variety of toppings and mix-ins. Then I think raw veggies for a side, and maybe rolls. Subway cookie platters for dessert. The planning and the unknown number of guests make me nervous!
@drewsmom17 @RightCoaster I think rightcoasters assessment is pretty fair. My son similar to @eandesmom is committed to RIT (except my son is going for Game Design and Development). WE were up there for accepted students day and the day before having meetings with different departments. For my kid , who is as far from enjoying partys and greek life, RIT is the better fit . How my southern boy is going to deal with upstate NY winters⦠he claims he loves cold weather⦠we shall see. The co-op program at RIT is also something that i feel makes a difference. I am being Biasād though. Back in the good ole days I got accepted to Lehigh. I also got accepted to CMU, so I ended up there , but Lehigh was on my list.
@drewsmom17 itās nice to be wanted! He will figure it out and really, both are great options though definitely very very different from each other. (Go Tigers! I have to say that of course lol!). Facebook reminded me this morning that S17 decided on this day 2 years ago (or at least announced itā¦pretty sure he decided and committed on a Saturday lol). I remember how hard it was for him and really feel for everyone going through this right now.
I do agree that @RightCoaster 's assessment is likely right. My S17 walks the line between mainstream and science kid, he does a fair amount of the ātraditionalā HS type activities both inside and out (XC, Scouts, lots and lots of music, runs a few clubs, running for office etc.) but also plenty on the more āgeekyā side if you well (one of the clubs is anime, pretty into coding and gaming, CS internship with the district etc). His other choice was more on the Lehigh vibe side of things though far more urban and less preppy. Or at least thatās my impression of Lehigh based on the kids we know that have gone there. RIT is a much better fit for my son and while yes, the brick city is referred to by some as the ugliest campus, for others itās beautiful and they fall in love.
Good luck!
@cakeisgreat my D just committed to CofC over the weekend ! Congrats to your family! I havenāt been very active on CC but been reading for a while. 3kids 3 different types of schools here too!
@kermit2345 Congratulations!
@kermit2345 my son will be a freshman at CofC as well, and I have a Jr there as well.
Iām getting a kick out of the RIT descriptions because my (very much younger) cousin is in his last year there. Heās a great kid, but a big partier and a bit of a scamp. He must have rocked the boat a little bit. Lol.
Anyway - I like Rochester - itās not a bad town. But Iām partial to upstate NY - especially in summer time when it really shines. Unfortunately, thatās when kids have to go home!
Well, they donāt have to come home but I sure hope mine will want to be home at least that first summer!
The only time Iāve been in Rochester was the summer and it seemed like a decent place, nice smaller city. I wasnāt trying to disparage it, I was just noting that cities like NYC and Philly were more robust.
I personally like smaller cities more than bigger cities. I just have a hard time dealing with traffic, noise, crowds nonstop. In New England I like cities like Providence, Portland,ME and Burlington,VT. Those have plenty to do and less chaos.
congrats @kermit2345 on the final decision!
@mom2twogirls - true! Personally, Iād rather meet my kids up north. I hate suburban Philadelphia summers, especially now that our central air is non-working. Thereās nowhere to swim unless you want to pay an arm and a leg for it. Itās humid and hot and just gross. Blech! In upstate NY there is so much more on offer if you like the outdoors and quirky, artsy community activities.
Also, on the RIT front, lots of kids from my daughterās school go there. Almost all sciencey-Robotics kids.
@RightCoaster - oh yeah, I didnāt take your comment as disparaging. Rochester is definitely not NYC or Philly, thatās for sure. And itās really a shadow of its former self - itās kind of sad. There are also parts to avoid. But, the lake is there, the canal, some good restaurants. Iāve never spent much time there, but it seems like you could keep busy. I live in the suburbs of Philly, and I rarely go downtown. Public transport is not great, itās kind of expensive, but trying to drive and park anywhere is impossible. And getting to NYC, while close enough to pop up there for just a day or a show, is also very expensive. Iāve looked at bus schedules and have never found an itinerary that felt safe to me. There are probably good, affordable options to get there by bus from Lehigh, though.
@carolinamom2boys congrats! D is very excited! Iāve loved following all your posts. Now on to the roommate search!
@Trixy34 we toured in summer (RIT) and it was just lovely! wonderful things nearbyā¦Niagra, Finger Lakesā¦
