Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

Remember that it’s always OK to ask your child, “Are you thinking about suicide?” Studies have shown the question will NOT encourage them to take their life. If they answer yes, ask if they have a plan and means. Take them to the ER if you have any fear at all they’re serious. I lost my 20-year-old nephew to suicide, so this hits close to home for me. And no, even in hindsight, we had NO clue he was suicidal. None.

Congratulations on the multiple acceptances. My D had a similar situation in that she was accepted to four conservatories. It took her one day to decide on Juilliard.

@michele4 Congrats to your daughter on her acceptances, and especially Juilliard!! She must be so excited!

@michele4 First of all, huge congratulations and your D sound amazing - four acceptances with one being Julliard. I know the performing arts and either of those on their own would have been absolutely amazing. Second, either other schools were offering gold bullion or your D is as indecisive as mine. An entire day to select Julliard from any conservatory list is a long time ?.

@michele4 - Wow! Congratulations! That’s so exciting!

@michele4 --big congratulations!!

It’s official - S19 chose College of Charleston!

Yay! @cakeisgreat Congratulations!

Yay @cakeisgreat !

Awesome news @cakeisgreat!

Congrats @cakeisgreat - Looking forward to crosssing that finishing line and taking a deep breath.

Woohoo @cakeisgreat !! Time to celebrate a decision made and a great school!

Thanks all! So far 3 different kids in 3 different colleges with completely different environments in 3 different states. And #4 kid is starting tours. I am sure she wont pick any of the other 3 schools and will probably be in a different state.

How the heck do I handle all this LOL

Yikes @cakeisgreat good luck :slight_smile:

DD is still talking to a potential roommate, so that’s good that the conversation is still going several days later. Just wishing to get that figured out because her LLC is super small like 10 girls or less. As far as the FB group, some boys did act like it was a dating service when DD first got on so I think she added a photo of with her boyfriend and has had him prominently on her social media.

I’ve gone through all our photos picking ones to get prints of for DD to make photo boards. Currently working on uploading to Shutterfly. It’s been a trip through memory lane!

Her invitations are here and the reception is May 12. Wondering when we should start mailing them. DD got one from a friend this week so a few people are starting.

For those stressing about roommate selection, I have been told by more than one student at schools we visited that most kids let the school pick and the schools have at least as good of not a better success rate. Plus if you let the school pick and it’s not a fit it’s easier to request a change.

D19 is still not ready to commit even though I think she’s picked her school. Scratching my head here.

@momtogkc congrats on Tulane. D18 noticed that last year on the unofficial ig page for her school too. I reminded her that the super outgoing kids are more likely to be getting out there quickly. It’s only a small percentage of the students and there are many who aren’t on there or looking for roommates quite yet.

@Britmom5 Congratulations on the choices!

@sj2727 have fun at the visit!

@cakeisgreat congratulations! D18 loves it there.Wow, are they a combo of driving and plane rides or on the way to each other?

@bjscheel it sounds like you have a great start! Do you have a menu planned? It’s hard to look through old photos!

@pn24601 that’s good advice, thank you! I’m going to suggest that to S19.

@scholarme My D is like that. Just not ready to officially make the decision because What If?

For any of you who know a high stats student who found themselves with limited options, check out this thread on the University of Alabama scholarships still being open. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/2136436-possible-big-news-heard-bama-has-extended-their-scholarship-deadline-to-may-1-for-fall-students.html#latest

@Reebtoor I can’t get S19 to look at warm weather schools and tried to interest him in UAH. That’s a great option to still be open!

@scholarme that’s where S19 is too. I don’t want to push him since it’s really only been 10 days since he knew his options. I guess it’s been such a long process that it’s hard to make it final.

He has a frontrunner but trying to see if the other school has any reasons to sway him to them instead. He is flattered because they made it clear they want him.

I haven’t been posting much lately as I’ve been stressed with S and his back and forth on his decision. I have been reading along with all the comments and am so happy for those who have decisions, and commiserate with those of you who don’t.

S has now ruled out one if his three final choices so we are down to two. The one eliminated is the school he has already deposited at so now we need to research how to inform them he isn’t coming after all and get the refundable part of the deposit back. He is thinking about this intelligently so I can’t complain too much. He said it was hard to let his deposited school go, but as much as he loved it there were too many negatives popping up. He says he is really having a hard time with the final two. I tried to do the coin flip thing but he wouldn’t play. I have insisted on an answer by Easter and he has agreed.
