Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

There was a skip day right before prom in which girls went to get their nails done. DD was too worried about soccer to go. Then she and friends were going to skip last Friday to go see Avengers but there was a band and choir concert and no one wanted to jeopardize that. So they went to the movie at 11 pm that night for their big hurrah.

We have a winner! Deposit has been made at Hobart College! We’re excited. Grandpa and Grandma are already plotting their route to the finger lakes and researching B&Bs. Lol.

@Trixy34 I told him that I wouldn’t lie and say he was sick but I would call in and approve his absence–IF he confirmed there were no exams and he talked with his coach to let him know he was participating and confirm that his school would not suspend seniors from athletic events and he told me their plans for the day. He decided not to do it after talking with his coach.

I wish his school would set down a clear policy. A 7-day ban from participating in any school event (athletic, music, debate team, mock trial, theater production etc) is fine but students should be told and not have to guess if admin will be strict this year and whether to risk it or not.

Here our school policy would make that an unexcused absence and there would be no credit given for any work that happened to be due that day.

Congrats to your S @Trixy34!! And with 2 days to spare!

@Trixy34 congrats on the decision!

Congrats @Trixy34 ! Great news!

Woot Woot! Congrats @Trixy34 !

Yay @Trixy34 and @PopUpZone1921 for the decisions! What a relief!

Yay to @bjscheel D for the scholarship! And fingers crossed for more to come

And congrats to all those who survived prom, dress shopping (prom or graduation) and senior skip day! We are still waiting on prom and senior skip day here (give me strength).

Still waiting on senior skip day and the IB banquet here as well. Best of luck to all our seniors!

Tech week for the senior play is not starting out well. Half of the class is working hard, the other half is goofing off. The set is less than half done. Most people don’t know their lines. Kiddo isn’t solid with his lines in the second half of the play - he remembers his lines when other people say theirs correctly, but he has a tough time recovering if he’s fed the wrong cue. Kiddo was spitting nails angry last night, and still slamming doors and throwing things this morning.

I ask if he’s said these things to anyone in class and he said no, he keeps It inside until he gets home. I think that needs to change. He needs to yell at some people to get off their asses and contribute or it’s all going to eat him up inside.

@Trixy34 Congratulations on your son’s decision!

My D is so excited about her decision, it’s fun to see. She texted me from school yesterday and asked if I wanted to go thrift shopping this afternoon. Her roommate said she found some OSU stuff at a thrift store. We went and DID find one OSU T-shirt…here, in the suburbs of Boston!

And, speaking of which, D found a roommate! I was sure she was going to go random. But she has been interacting on the OSU Class of 2023 Instagram account, and got a private message from a girl in the Boston area. They have a lot of mutual friends, so they compared living habits, etc, and decided they would be a good match. So they’re planning to get together sometime soon, so they can get to know each other before next fall.

My son announced senior skip day is this Friday and I think I am OK with it. They have their Senior Bash the night before, and not much happening at school on Friday. No sports events for him that day either, so he won’t be punished for missing a game or anything. I’m officially done with worrying about anything high school related and Im only interested in watching sports/arts events for the next month while I can.

He also signed up for senior assassin a few weeks back, even though we told him we’d prefer him to not participate.
( No danger worries, they play with giant squirt guns).

We didn’t give him any grief though. Well. turns out that was the right parental move, as he told us yesterday that he was sick of it and not playing anymore. He just had fear of missing out and didn’t want to be the only one of his friends who did not participate. He enjoyed it for a few days and had fun, but the game at our school seems to drag out for weeks. He’s bored with it now and wants to focus on other events coming up. So I’m glad we didn’t get into a huge argument about how dumb senior assassin is, lol.

Congrats to @Trixy34 on the decision. We know a kid there who plays on the soccer team. He seems to like the school and his parents are happy about it too. Good luck!

@rightcoaster our assassins game started in Feb and is still going. Three kids left. Two of them are XC/track kids so S19 still interested. And the winner gets $500 so I’ve been driving one of the finalists to school each day because he’s trying to stay safe and walking to the bus is risky. (His mom and dad leave for work early.) He is planning an elaborate scheme to get his next victim that involves taking an early train into Chicago and catching this other boy at Union Station when he’s on his way to an EC he has down there on Sat mornings. Crazy!

S19 and a bunch of friends went to see Endgame last night after practice. He said he had no homework at all. Most of his classes are all seniors and I think the teachers are assigning less work these days. APs are coming up so, in those classes, kids are just taking practice tests in class and are done with learning content so that also explains the lack of homework.

Big meets on Wed and Sat. Prom on Saturday night and a big party in the city on Sunday. The kids rented a house and will be hanging there all day and maybe even headed to the beach. Yes, we have real beaches in the city of Chicago. I think the forecast says the temps will be in the 70s so I’m guessing no swimming but they can play volleyball and hang out. Parents are chaperoning so I’m hoping for a safe, fun day.

Yay @Trixy34 ! Congrats to you and your S!

Congrats @trixy34 and @PopupZone1921 on decisions!

April 30th and still waiting… D feels bad that she’s inclined in reverse cost order.

Congrats @bjscheel on scholarships.

Scholarship related vent: Annoying occurrence related to the school that is in the middle of the decision pack. D had an outside scholarship interview that required merit and financial statements from any school still considering. When she printed out the financials from one school directly from the official account versus the acceptance letter, a department scholarship that she’d applied for back in early February(?) appeared on the statement. Had never heard anything about it since. Unfortunately, I recalled that there was a caveat to the scholarship that might rule D out. D contacted the director, who we’d met, to confirm the scholarship and the conditions. To date, no response to her original email or the follow-up. Not a good look while selling ā€œcommunity within a large universityā€.

@momzilla2D - I should hit the thrift stores today. What are the odds I will find a Hobart t-shirt? Lol. We have absolutely NO SWAG for swag day at school. We stopped buying swag in early August because there were too many schools and too many unknowns. Congrats on the roommate too. Thankfully, that’s not something he’ll have to worry about. First years are housed with the students that are taking the same freshman seminar.

S19 opted out of the senior assassin game, as did a lot of his friends. They were just concerned about some kids getting too carried away, and, of course, you can’t control who will get your name. They thought about organizing their own game, but I haven’t heard anything. Meanwhile,I am enjoying the stories of the kids who are involved, as well as the local social media posts of clueless newcomers to the area who are wondering who all these suspicious kids with nerf guns lurking around their properties are. @homerdog - since February!? Oh my goodness! That’s hilarious that you’re helping. (I would do the same for any of S’s friends, though) One of my good friends made her daughter go out and do yard work and she was squirt gun ambushed. I have to wonder if my friend wasn’t maybe extracting a little bit of payback for all the money spent on dance for the past 15 years, plus the full tuition USC admit. LOL!

Kiddo got home last night and was stressed out about his upcoming Physics and BC calc tests since he has missed a lot of school lately for travel to academic competitions and accepted student days. Said he was going to have to study and cram all night. A half hour later, after he had done some problems, he was fine and up for going to the grocery store and out to dinner to celebrate his commitment. Lol. He’s not taking any of his AP exams this year, so he should be done pretty soon, I guess. As long as he maintains a high enough grade in the class, he doesn’t have to take a final exam. This is all so foreign to me. Growing up in NY state, we had Regents exam finals and we didn’t graduate until all tests were taken and grades were entered. Oh well. He has worked hard. I guess he deserves some time to kick back.

@peachActuary73 - that’s really aggravating! I hope you can get an answer today!

S19 is doing the senior assasins game and having fun with it. I am really surprised that he hasn’t been knocked out yet. He’s on the soccer team so has a schedule that is widely known. He’s gotten one target but not made any effort to get his 2nd.

I asked S if he’s been studying for his language AP exam (he needs to). ā€œshrug. Nah, I probably will. Not sure, don’t really care.ā€ As I posted earlier, he has been abducted and replaced with a body double.

@ninakatarina Oh tech week. I remember that well from D16. We were always walking on eggshells since D would come home fuming or crying.

@liska21, just wanted to say, if your son’s big act of teen rebellion is considering participating in senior skip day, well, you’ve done a good job. And I think your advice to call the coach, and the fact that he did it, is great. If his second best option for teen rebellion is to not study for an AP test, that’s not bad either!

Tomorrow is the day that the kids are supposed to wear school swag and we also have No Swag. Well, we have a grocery bag from Gettysburg, but that’s it. We probably should have bought swag when we were up there, but kiddo is still hanging back on emotional commitment.
