Parents of the HS Class of 2019 (Part 1)

@SJ2727. Yes, that’s it. All of my kids have one and can fit a ton of stuff in it.

I think the only good about the redesign is the font. It looks crisper.

Joined the FB page, such a relief to see a normal layout. I wonder if they ran this by a UAT user group… it’s so much harder to navigate now!
We’ll be flying him for move in, Southwest so 6 checked bags and we’ll buy fridge and tv there. Also, apparently, a thick mattress topper because after he slept on a dorm mattress for orientation my ‘I can sleep on anything’ son decided he might have been overly optimistic lol.

Two weeks after move in (Labor Day weekend), we’ll drive his car to him and then fly home. His car is too tiny to fit 3 people and bags in, so we have an excuse to see him lol.

We’re flying out (obviously) and we were talking about shipping some things. But I think kiddo will make do with two suitcases full. Coats and jackets are going to be the big bulk - he can wear his heaviest coat on the plane if he has to, I’ll wear his second heaviest, and that will save a lot of bag space.

We probably won’t use all 6 bags, just happy that we get that many free if we want them :). S19 isn’t a clothes horse, but has a ton of D&D books, games, etc that will probably take more room than clothes lol.

We’ve been traveling, so this is my first log in in days, and…Dang, maybe try some usability testing first? This honestly ranks up there with the decision a couple years back when my university’s administration rolled out a mandatory redesign for all department websites that made it almost impossible for students to find faculty contact information.

(No, they haven’t fixed it, presumably because it doesn’t mess with their world, and fixing it would require going with a slightly more expensive CMS.)

I also hate the new design - hurts my eyes, too hard to tell what thread have new posts, barely shows anything on a page. Glad I could find my way back to you all though!

Hope everybody is having a great summer. D and I just spent the weekend in New Orleans meeting with an advisor to pan her schedule. The weekend went well but the schedule planning was not so great. Of course half of the things she wanted were not open. She has a schedule but doesn’t love it. Luckily next week they open it up to everyone to start changing classes so hopefully she can move a few things around. I got to meet her roommate and her roommate’s dad which was great. We saw one of my favorite bands play at a tiny venue - actually ran into the lead singer on the street when we were wandering around town before the show. Only bad part was D lost her license somewhere which made it a pain to fly home!

@momtogkc I hear this happening to lots of S19’s friends - not getting classes they want. I wonder how we could all have known that could be a problem during our college search. As far as I know, S19 will not have that problem but he doesn’t register until he gets to school.

@homerdog I knew it might be a problem from reading both here on CC and on the Tulane Parent FB page. She did get some of what she wanted so that is a start. I have also read that come next week when kids can start shuffling classes people seem to have a better chance of getting what they want. D and I have made a few spreadsheets of possible outcomes if she can get into her top picks. It’s not that easy when you have a kid who likes to sleep late! On one hand she does not want any early classes, on the other there is a cool class that she did get in that starts at 9:30am T/Th - does she stick with it and hope it’s not too early or make her life easier and take a later, boring class? That will be up to her!

One thing was our own fault, we did not know that she needed about 5 pre requisites before she could take any class in the Business School. She never thought she would want to take a class there so we did not look into it. One of Tulane’s selling points is that when you are admitted it is to all of their schools - no having to apply to Business or Engineering or Architecture. They say you can take any class in any school, we did not see the fine print that said “except the business school.” D decided last minute that she might be interested in an Intro to Marketing class. When she got to the advisor she was told if you want to take any business class you have to take all these other courses first. I can’t remember them all but I know two were Psych and Micro and I think there were 4-5 total. The freshman all take a Freshman Program type class and there are many to pick from (if you can get in) but if you ever want to take the business school classes you have to take the Business oriented freshman class. Just a few things that threw her plan for a loop.

This isn’t academic, but is a pretty impressive accomplishment nonetheless, so I’m going to brag. My S19s just won silver medals today at the National competition for a two-man team for Audio/Radio production. They were state champions for the second year running, and last year they were 4th in the nation, so just missed the medals. The trend was upward! So proud of them!

That’s awesome!! @Britmom5

Congratulations @Britmom5 - that is really fantastic!

Congratulations to them! @Britmom5

Congrats @Britmom5 !!
D texted me her dorm assignment last nite. No roommate info yet. She’d been hoping to land in the quirky older college she’d stayed during her visit, but it took me all of 5 minutes to realize she’s in one of the newest. Found the architects’ site with tons of pics as they’d received LEED awards. Tiny closet, but doubles with private bath.
I’ve decided planning can become an illness. I went in her room this AM to look at the still packaged bedding we’d ordered before she left, wondering if it might clash with the tan tile scheme in her room. smh

@peachActuary73 It’s really happening when you have the layout of the dorm room! I imagine that’s quite helpful for planning storage and organization. S19 will get his roommate and dorm assignment in a couple of weeks. So excited!

Costco has a nice rolling storage cart in store yesterday. Could be a nice addition to any dorm room.

I can one up y’all! I have my D’s dorm floor plan, not to scale, but has dimensions. I made a 1/2" = 1’-0" scale drawing on grid paper. I was an interior design major. Doesn’t completely help me because the window dimensions are not there, I just have a ballpark on that location and size. At least I have an idea of what we’re working with. I agree that dorm planning is a mania!

We just returned from D19’s orientation. OSU does a great job with the orientation and the first year experience. D made some friends, met her advisor, scheduled her classes, and loaded up on some gear. She is so excited and can’t wait to start. We were very happy to hear that her APs do count for something. SIL told H that regardless of what they say, they don’t help at all. I think it varies by school. But D19’s AP English got her out of her only required English class, and AP Calc should get her out of her only required math class (if she passes). She also placed out of 2 of the 3 required Foreign Language required courses. (Though she’s is a little worried about that 3rd FL course, since she did not take FL senior year.)

D is already considering changing her major. Her intended major is Criminology/Criminal Justice, which is a BA at OSU. Her advisor told her that they now have a BS option in Sociology with a Criminology focus. It would require more science classes than the BA route. But she has some science credits from her other APs. So it’s an option.

She could not be happier with her choice of OSU. She loves the school and the city. It’s fun to see.

@Britmom5 Way to go!!! That is an awesome accomplishment, and definitely bragworthy!

Congrats @Britmom5 !!

Jealous of you who already know dorms assignments and room layouts. I can’t even take D to buy bedding yet because all of the freshman dorms have XL beds except one that has regular town beds. We don’t find out which dorm D will get for a few more weeks so I can’t start planning anything.

We woke up early this morning because it was the first day students could start making changes to their schedules. It did not help much but she was able to switch from Spanish to French and changed a Sociology class. She still doesn’t love her schedule but we have read that you can keep checking through the summer and things might open up. She found an Into to the Music Business class that she thought sounded fun (she is trying to find one fun class to add to her basic Writing/French/Psych classes) but of course there are only two sessions and they are full. It is taught by a grammy winning music producer so I am guessing that one won’t open up anytime soon!

One thing that has made it a bit hard to plan her schedule is that language classes are four days a week - do other schools have that? I noticed calculus is the same. Of course her not eating to take any classes before 10am does not help either!
