@scoutmom2002 I wouldn’t worry about the Macy’s part…I have a friend with a daughter who graduated from UNC Chapel Hill and works as a waitress because she is unable to find a job in her major. As said above, depends on the kid and the major.
I went to UIUC right around that same timeframe, got involved in too much partying and drinking and took five years to graduate. I was a sheltered good kid from northern NJ. Yes, it can happen to anyone at any school.
I have had a very good life, IMO, so it’s really not the end of the world if it does happen.
@scoutmom2002 I would say trust your gut. Isn’t VMI much better in terms of career outcomes and graduation rate? Maybe you could talk about those stats.
@1stTimeThruMom - yes, that’s true. Right now all depends on whether ODU coach shows further interest after this coming weekend’s college ID showcase.
ODU has two things going for it…(1) ODU has a B.S. in Cybersecurity and is an NSA designated National Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Cyber Operations and (2) will likely end up being less expensive, although won’t know for sure until full package offer received.
@milgymfam Goucher is a contender for my D20, too. She got a very nice merit award, but we are waiting to see if she gets a tuition exchange scholarship - that is the only way we can swing it. Hoping to hear soon!
@DeeCee36 We played the tuition exchange game in 2014 with our oldest. She ended up getting one decent option, in addition to our home school, out of the 6 or 8 that we were allowed to apply for. It was a nice perk to have! Good luck.
@DeeCee36 luckily they gave decent need based aid as well as the presidential scholarship. I’m also glad the visit is only a short-ish drive away for the dance day. I hope your D gets the exchange!
Well - ODU coach never showed this past weekend – S20 irked after coach sent him specific email noting he’d be there to watch him play soccer. Oh well.
Meanwhile D20 still hasn’t received word from EA at UMW…stressful times.
@scoutmom2002 sorry for the stress, I feel ya!
Lord help me, DS is waffling on his choices! From the get go he had had one strong 1st choice. I made him visit other schools just in case he didn’t get in. He got in all schools and is deferred at his one true reach. Last weekend he was confidently telling people he is going to Appalachian, the whole family is going up in two weeks for an admitted day visit. Now he seems torn, started asking if he can visit some of the other schools again too. Which is fine and I told him so, and I told him that just because he has talked about going to this school, he can still change his mind. We have until May, but I really though this was clear for him. Maybe after this upcoming visit he will “know”.
We will all be able to take a deep breathe in May right???
@ITBgirl – yes, have until May to make the final decision. Your DS seeming torn…kind of like college/wedding jitters…worried about making wrong decision. Same with my DS…seemed so gung ho and happy to be recruited to play soccer at VMI - went on overnight visit, had me go out and buy VMI college soccer shirt, etc…now he’s not so sure.
@ITBgirl Your avatar pic is perfect with this post.
I agree with above… He will feel more secure and confident as the real deadline draws nearer. He probably has lots of friends who are still waiting for admissions decisions so it’s kind of fun imagining there are lots of possible paths.
With my DS16 it was the admitted student visit that made him comfortable committing. Meeting “his people” amongst the admitted students, staying overnight in a dorm, enjoying the campus, etc were all important to taking that final leap. All the online research helps but just cannot replace being on campus and experiencing that it just feels right.
@ITBgirl same situation here. I was sure going to admitted students day at App would secure the deal. Nope not yet. Now waiting to go to ECU on 3/21. Seems soooo far away! Good luck to your son, I tell my daughter, it’s a big decision and it’s your decision. While I would love her to be at App and only 1.5 hours away I really believe ECU may be the best decision for nursing and it’s 3 hours away. Trying not to persuade in any way, just want a decision.
@ljasnau Yes they will figure it out. Nursing tour at ECU is impressive. We didn’t look deeply at nursing at App for my daughter, just Chapel Hill, Wilm and ECU, but the program at ECU along with Honors really won her over.
Time to vent about UMW…so yesterday D20 followed up again with her Admissions Counselor on status of her EA application…well, apparently they did not have her application marked as EA. She had completed a special UMW application back in August when she went for an interview. We have email proof from her Admissions Counselor back in September that she would “make sure to make a note that your application should be considered Early Action.” In addition - all of D20’s subsequent email communications to her Admissions Counselor have had “EA Application” in the subject line!
D20 is extremely disappointed and thinks they might have already capped their number of EA acceptances and she will likely be deferred. I’m more upset than disappointed.
Her Admissions Counselor was very apologetic noting " I am so sorry. I went back through our emails and your file and found a communication error on my part which is why your file was still marked incorrectly. I have made my supervisor aware and she is working with our director so that we can get you a decision as soon as possible. Again, I cannot express how sorry I am for this mistake and I will do everything I can to get you a decision."
I know mistakes happen, but this added stress was not needed, especially from D20’s Top Pick school UMW. If D20 receives a deferral UMW may go down a notch on her list of top 3.
Thanks for letting me vent.
@scoutmom2002 sorry about that! fingers crossed for good news fast!
@scoutmom2002 Yikes! That’s pretty bad. Here’s to hoping that their acknowledgment of the mistake means an expedited acceptance for her! Although, I’m curious if the incident will affect her perception of the school, even if she is accepted now?
@scoutmom2002 is it still her #1, even with this fiasco? I hope so. Mistakes happen.
@eb23282 and @Momofmanytoo – yes, mistakes happen. D20 was disappointed but more at her Admissions Counselor and the process. It hasn’t affected her perception of the school per se, but definitely the administration staff. I think it’s still her #1 with CNU coming up neck and neck though after this maybe.
@eb23282 and @Momofmanytoo - we are doing the happy dance today. D20 received her acceptance to UMW in the mail today!! Woohoo!!
