Parents of the HS Class of 2020 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

Congrats to all the kids who have made their decisions!
S still has 5 schools to hear from. All are reachier than the 4 he’s been accepted to so it’s possible he’ll get 4 rejections. He did commit to Boulder (top choice of the 4) so that he could be in the first phase for housing. But 4 of the 5 could knock Boulder out.
One more month until all decisions are in. Hang in there everyone!

@WorriedKnight thanks for the info! There seem to be a few schools still accepting applications, but he is pretty happy with waiting to transfer after 2 years at cc, and financially it’s a better choice for us (and him). He also has his first part-time job at our local UPS store which he is really enjoying and will continue that over the next 2 years while at cc. That will give him time to save up some cash towards his last 2 years if he decides he wants a school with slightly higher tuition.

And, yes, he did break-up from his unhealthy relationship back in early November. It was rough for a while but both he and his ex have moved on. He has just now started dating a girl he knows from school, church youth group and his x-country team. They seem very well matched and she is so sweet. But he definitely learned some lessons from the last relationship, as they are taking things very slow and are hesitant to even use the labels “boyfriend” and “girlfriend”…lol. They are headed to her Junior Prom in March and then his Senior Ball in April. We are incredibly proud of him!

So our 3.3uw/3.6w kid just got into Purdue regular decision, which was a shock. I am so happy for her to have this opportunity, as applying late usually doesn’t work out that way. The only issue is that she was accepted into her second major choice, which she’s not thrilled about. According to my research, it’s easy to transfer to her first choice after the first semester or two, as long as your grades in certain classes are ok.

This is, by far, her best option yet. So take the sure thing first choice major at a school she wasn’t completely thrilled about, or take the chance on the better school and transfer into your major later? I think I’ve got some gaps to bridge with her before she make an informed decision.

What are the majors?

@WorriedKnight

1st choice -Krannert /accounting
2nd choice - Polytechnic/ HR Management

@Momofmanytoo This is amazing! Congrats! Definitely pick the school over the major – and who knows, she might like the second choice and stick with it.

@thedreamydaisy Congrats to you too! Stepping away from the pressure to just attend a 4-year university when it’s not the right time for him shows real maturity. This kind of decision, with solid support from parents, is very smart.

@mom2jgd thanks for saying that! It can be a little tough when not everyone supports or understands this type of decision.

So…D20 happy about acceptance to UMW and deposits made. Still waiting on CNU and W&M.

However, when should D20 notify other colleges accepted to that she will withdraw? She’s been busy with school and work and kinda forgot about the other schools.

Congrats @scoutmom2002 ! That is such a relief to have the decision made.

I, too, am wondering about how to go about declining these acceptances. Some schools have a way to click a button to withdraw their app. But most don’t have that option in their portal. I hate the think we will have to send separate emails for each of these?

For the schools that my D has definitely decided against, she has emailed her admissions rep and they’ve handled it for her.

D20 wait listed at CNU. Received letter today. Although accepted and deposit put in at UMW, she still wanted to go on the wait list.

So when my S20 withdraws his acceptance at CNU he should ask them to give his spot to her, right!

@scoutmom2002 how has the communication been from UMW, CNU? Both are on S21’s list so I’m curious to know how they’re handling this COVID thing.

Final results: Accepted at Lehigh, Furman, Elon, St. Joseph’s and UMBC.

Final results for my son. He did better in the process than I was expecting. His stats are a bit high for this group but his junior year was his lowest year which is when I joined. He has a 3.5uw, 3.64w and his superscored SAT is 1330, highest sitting 1280.

Accepted-U Iowa, U Oregon, Penn State, CU Boulder, Syracuse, U Washington (was waitlisted then accepted)

Waitlisted- U Miami

Rejected- SDSU and USC (CA)

Leaning towards UW but Syracuse is still in the running

I may have already responded here (posted DS’s results on a couple of threads) but I don’t think so. Here are his results:

Accepted:
-CCSU
-Clarkson
-UHartford
-UMaine (honors college)
-Manhattan College
-UMass Dartmouth
-Quinnipiac
-Wentworth

Denied:
-Catholic University
-UNH
-Stevens Institute

Hasn’t made a decision yet, but it’s down to Clarkson, UMaine, and Manhattan, with Clarkson currently in the top spot and his likely choice.

This thread is the best! This is a great group of people with great support and advice, I am so thankful to have found this group. Congrats to everyone and good luck with making decisions in this crazy time.

My son’s results were good, he was admitted everywhere he applied, but we kept our list focused on his stats, and what he wanted in an in-state school. We were lucky that we started visits early, and even had a few second visits before everything shut down.

Final Results - Accepted:

NCSU
Appalachian State University
UNC Wilmington
East Carolina University
UNC Charlotte
Wingate University

He will be attending App State. It is hard to let the spot at NCSU go since that was a reach for him, but he has always wanted to go to App.

My daughter also focused on In State Schools. While she had a high GPA 3.9 she had low test scores of SAT 1090 and ACT 20. She has always taken honors classes, dual enrollment and has 1 AP Class.

She played 4 years varsity softball
3 years varsity tennis
1 year varsity swim

She applied to 7 instate schools and was accepted by all.

Accepted:
UNC Wilmington (initially deferred)
App State
UNC Charlotte
Wingate University
Queens University
East Carolina University
Western Carolina University

She has chosen after a lot of consideration to attend UNC Wilmington.

I pray all of these kids are able to begin their freshman year on time and in person.

My son committed to Arizona last fall. They opened the housing portal this week and it took him all of 15 minutes to find a roommate. We paid the housing deposit early so hopefully he’ll get his first choice dorm - he really wants a suite-style room.

And like @ljasnau said, hopefully they will be able to start on campus. He signed up for orientation in June and that has been moved online.

We just got an email that his orientation in June will be online only, sadly. Fingers crossed that this could change.

Now that my D has decided/deposited, I have a full run down. Though her gpa is higher than this thread’s intent, her test scores were a tough hill to climb and I think it puts her in here solidly.

My D is homeschooled, 4.0 uw (very few “mommy grade” classes- 4 over four years), but a 1090 SAT and 22 ACT. She has six DE classes with a 4.0. She is an intended dance major (double major with education), but has only been dancing since sophomore year.

No academic rejections

Dance rejections:
Point park
Shenandoah
Dominican U of CA
Sacred Heart (don’t have a dance major but not accepted into their full dance company)
Adelphi
George Mason

Waitlisted:
LMU (still completely shocked she wasn’t outright rejected, though we know she’s not getting off the waitlist)

Accepted/ academic scholarship per year:
Dean college: $33,000
Springfield College: $30,000
Rutgers Mason Gross: $4,000
Stockton: $8000
Goucher: $33,000
Radford (in state): $4,000
Old Dominion (in state): $4,000
College of Charleston: $2,000
U of Wyoming: $4,000
U of Roehampton London: $5,000

Attending:
Goucher College, deferred to start in 2021
Decision wasn’t based on scholarships because she will be using the GI bill and would have no out of pocket cost at any of the schools anyway. She fell in love with Goucher’s campus and warm feel, and likes the things easily accessible in Towson. They also did the absolute best job of feeding her (she has celiac so it’s a serious consideration). She also likes their 4+1 master in teaching program and that is her intended path. Her second runner up was Dean, but she never got to visit and couldn’t bump something she loved for something that was a question mark. Their dance program is better on paper though and she wishes she could have truly compared. Her third choice was Wyoming, which was absolutely perfect in every way- except location. She just couldn’t get past the distance, isolation, and long harsh winters. Roehampton would have been a serious contender if they offered gap years (all the other schools would).
