@ITBgirl UNCW orientation was scheduled for June, they have changed it from a 2 day on campus to a 1 day with the majority on line, they are going thru 3 modules with the 3rd being a 1 day on campus. She is now scheduled to go on July 20th. Hopefully by then, things will be getting close to normal.
My son is still deciding, but I wanted to post here because it is easy to get overwhelmed and pessimistic (or at least it was for me) on the CC boards. Our son has a 2.7 GPA at a public school, 1250 SAT, and no extracurriculars. I think his essay was great, and he did tend to take very challenging courses. He applied to lots of colleges because we thought he might not get in to a single one. I wanted to report that he got into the following schools regular decision, all with merit aid, in some cases with significant merit aid: DePaul, Duquesne, Temple, Seton Hall, University of Rhode Island, Hofstra, Lycoming, and College of Wooster.
@newenglandjane CC can be VERY toxic if you let it. Your son has great options - donāt let anyone tell you otherwise. You should be proud.
@newenglandjane My daughter looked at a lot of the same schools. We loved Duquesne. It was my top choice for my D. Merit money eventually made the decision for us to go somewhere else, but its a great school. I know lots of kids who are thriving after graduating from more than half of your list. I doubt there is a bad choice to be had. Congrats.
@newenglandjane those are great options! Congratulations to your son and best wishes to him as he makes his decision.
That is great to hear about Duquesne. Unfortunately, we were not able to visit, but have looked at videos. REALLY wishing we did our campus visits in the fall!
Thatās a great group of acceptances, Jane! Congratulations on your sonās accomplishments and your efforts guiding him to choosing from these schools.
@newenglandjane congrats on the great list of acceptances. Your son will do well wherever he lands I am sure.
I totally hear you on the CC boards feeling overwhelming. They have a way of making you (and your child) feel very inferior at times.
My S20 has ultimately decided to attend community college for 2 years and then transfer. He did get into all 3 of the Cal State schools he applied to, but ultimately has decided heād like to cast a wider net after completing his 2 years at our local cc. Definitely not a popular choice here on these boards
D just got a big surprise. She was accepted off the waitlist at Rutgers New Brunswick. I think with everything going on she will just stick with her original plan of staying closer to home, but it was still nice news for her.
Congratulations to your daughter. Even though she has made a decision to attend a different college, itās always a good feeling to get other offers.
Checking in after long hiatus due to pandemic. Hoping everyone is staying safeā¦we have newsā¦D20 just got a phone call from CNU - she was accepted off the waitlist!
Now the most difficult partā¦.choosing between UMW and CNU. Both small schools but different vibesā¦.of course the plan was to attend admitted student days, spend night, interact with students/teachersā¦ā¦to really get a feel for which school would be best fitā¦ā¦
She was happy with UMW until she heard they were discontinuing their 5 year MAT program and moving to BS in Education - although after attending College of Education webinar seemed happy with current option of combined BS in Elementary Education/Special Education.
But CNU is continuing its 5 year MAT program - they feel strongly that teachers who have degrees in a subject area are better prepared for the content they will be teaching. Also, if you decide to step out of the classroom at some point in the future, you will have an undergraduate degree in a field (English, sociology, psychology, math, etc.) that can open other career doors.
A lot for her to think about and while I donāt want to pressure herā¦the UMW deposits I already paid are non-refundable after May 1.
Thatās great, @scoutsmom . We got the same call this morning.
I hope your daughter makes her decision before May 1. Every little bit saved will help buy more stuff for her room.
@EconPop - contragts to you too! Hard to decide by May 1. We also donāt have a clue what financial aid CNU will provide.
Decision made! My son will be going to University of Washington! It came down to there and U Miami.
Overall, he did MUCH better than I was expecting. His uw gpa is 3.5, w is 3.6 and he had a 1330 superscore SAT.
He was accepted to Syracuse, Penn State, U Oregon, U Iowa, Colorado Boulder.
Accepted to U Washington and Miami off the waitlists.
Rejected to USC (CA) but offered an option to transfer sophomore year.
Rejected from SDSU. Now fingers crossed that these kids can start college in the fall!
Yup. Arizona said they are planning on being open on campus so I took advantage of the low airfares and booked our flights to drop S off in August. They are with SW points so fully refundable.
Funny story with it - his younger sister wants to come, so I booked four round trip tickets. The light finally went on a few hours later and I cancelled the reservation and booked three round trip tickets and a one-way
@Johnny523 funny about booking your S a return flight. It definitely takes time getting used to the new normal once your kid leaves. Then they come home and it takes time to get used to them being home again, and then they leave againā¦it goes on and on.
Congrats to all. So nice to see people with so many great options. We did good!
Early registration for classes is today, we are pushing forward and assuming that DS will start on campus.
@eb23282 - so sorry for late reply to your questions [how has the communication been from UMW, CNU? Both are on S21ās list so Iām curious to know how theyāre handling this COVID thing. ]
Communication from both has been very good.
UMW held a webinar led by Dr. Brecht from the College of Education to provide information on available programs and pathways to teacher licensure. It was a very informative session.
D20 was on waitlist for CNU but heard back just this week that she got in. The head of the CNU Teacher Program has been very responsive this week in providing information on the 5 year MAT program.
The difference in teaching programs offered is what is making my D20 lean towards UMW. Both UMW and CNU have been very responsive in providing information on their programs.
S has narrowed his choice down to two but is still unable to commit. I think fit wise he really sees himself at school A, but school B is more known and strong for his major. I pretty much agree and support him (and itās ultimately his choice anyway), though we all thought (including him) from the beginning he would choose school B. I think he has a better chance of success at school A, but the gpa requirement tied to his merit is higher at that school. Since this is a kid who hasnāt been a super strong student to-date, I worry about this. Heāll be an engineering major, which can be a gpa killer. If you have a child who canāt decide, what, if anything, are you doing/have you done to help them get to a decision?
Edited to add that I also have a D that applied as a transfer and she also cannot choose where to go, whether to stay where she is or transfer out. She put together a pros and cons list, but everything is pretty equal.
@taverngirl my son couldnāt decide between Washington and Miami. Academically, he preferred Miami because of smaller class sizes, flexibility in choosing and changing majors. But fit wise, he saw himself more at UW. He knows that heās going to need to be a lot more proactive and advocate for himself at a large public school than at a smaller private. In the end, he chose UW.
Both were reach schools that he got into off the waitlists so no merit to take into consideration.
My oldest D is about to graduate from a small liberal arts womenās college. Academics and gpa are very important to her. I asked her where she thought her brother should go, figuring she would choose Miami for the easier to navigate (not better) academics. She surprised me and said Washington. Her opinion is that if youāre not happy socially, it will be hard to succeed academically.
