Parents of the HS Class of 2020: one semester down (almost)

How is your freshman doing?

DD is really happy to be home now. Online classes start tomorrow then finals start the 14th. Her school did a great job managing the virus - not a single positive case since early October, even with lots of random testing - but it came with isolation and she had difficulty meeting people and finding her place.

S ended up coming home early due to a relatively small outbreak that sent all classes online for the two weeks leading up to Thanksgiving. He enjoyed himself and made a good group of friends. Struggled a bit in his classes as they were in person only half the time, and he really needs in person classes all the time. Looks like he’ll end up with decent grades, but I feel like he would’ve done better in a normal year. Hoping they end up back on campus with in person classes.

Not sure if you are all comfortable sharing the name of college where your son or daughters are. This thread isn’t all that useful without matching the experience with a school.

This wasn’t really intended to be a “how are your kid’s colleges handling covid/classes.” I just wanted to check in and see how our kids are doing, given their unique freshman experience. Mine got home Wednesday night. I think she slept for the better part of 3 days. Engineering means lots and lots of homework, but she’s holding her own. I’m really proud of her. She’s hoping for a return to “normalcy” soon because she really wants her clubs to start meeting in person.

My daughter wasn’t allowed on campus in the fall, but was chosen to go for the spring semester. She is overjoyed, but I am nervous that it will be hard to make friends with reduced dorm capacity and freezing cold temperatures (no hanging out outside).

D was in the dorms for the fall, came home the weekend before Thanksgiving. She had a roommate, who made the fall bearable. They are fast friends and are in the same LLC, so they had 3 classes together. In their room. Dining hall is located in their dorm so its a quick elevator ride down… they just wish they could get out of their room, out of their dorm, etc. The walls definitely were closing in by the end.

2 weeks left, all online.

Online/Remote classes were definitely harder than in person. Consistently had professors post 150 minute lectures with quizzes/note requirements. Way longer than if they had been in person.

Not getting any personal interaction is hard… not gonna lie. But she would rather be on campus with her roommate than schooling at home.

She heads back January 15th, if Covid doesn’t postpone that.

My D was remote for her first semester, living at home.

Academically, she had a good experience. She enjoyed her classes, likes her professors, and felt they did a pretty good job teaching and keeping students engaged in this format. Heading into final exams in a week or so, her grades are good. Hoping for a strong finish.

Socially…what is there to say? She was living in her childhood bedroom, 300 miles away from school and the majority of students, and had just one HS friend who didn’t get to actually go away to school. Let’s just say I’m not surprised she has done so well academically, it’s basically all she had going on. She did get involved with a campus organization and participated in some remote “social” events, but they were few and far between.

She is moving to an off-campus apartment for spring semester, in the city where the school is located. She will be living with four other girls, and in the past few weeks, connecting with them (there seem to be nightly hours-long group video chats), she has started to sound like her old, happy self again. This will be really good for her.

She still plans to live on-campus in Fall 2021, if school presents it as an option, just to have that experience.
