Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

Sorry for that… wish “post Comment” button had confirmation against accidental posting…

…if she works harder in all areas in the next two years. She admits now she is working harder this summer than she did during school year - internship, volunteering, community college classes, self-prep for ACT and
PSAT. I take absolutely no credit in the change of attitude

Congratulations to all for great and happy AB scores! We won’t find out till tomorrow and I don’t think S20 even remembers. He certainly hasn’t asked for logins yet :D.

@bgbg4us We don’t plan to do anything for the PSAT. His true safety will be our flagship and he should get good merit there as long as he stays the course Junior year! And our state’s cutoff is crazily high, so we don’t think there are enough rewards for prepping.

D20 got a 5 on AP Euro and 3 on AP Seminar. Overall she is happy (but thought she would score higher on seminar?)

@socaldad2002, do you feel comfortable sharing what was involved in AP seminar exam? It involves evaluation of work done during the year as well, right? Thank you!

@typiCAmom I will have to ask D as I really don’t know exactly how they score the exam as its different from the other AP exam scoring. Her overall class grade was in the low 90s (A) but she must not have done particularly well on the final 2-hour AP exam. She did say that of the students she talked to this morning, everyone got a 3 on the AP exam? Will try to get more information.

FYI - she will not get the AP Capstone certificate as she got into ASB the next two years and the AP research class conflicts with her schedule. Overall, I think AP seminar was a great experience for her as she learned a lot of in-depth research, writing, and group and individual presentation and defend her argument skills.

@socaldad2002, thanks, it is still pretty helpful. Will see how D does in her AP Seminar this year - if she gets it as requested, that is.

@cakeisgreat so happy you had such a positive experience at Elon. I am sorry both of your kids did not get personalized tours. My guess is they prioritized the one who is applying first. If you go back for an accepted student event in the spring definitely bring your D20, not only do they have tours but they really give the kids and parents an in-depth look at the school. You can even go to a break out session just on the psychology major.

@beebee3 I hope you have a nice visit as well. Be sure to keep us posted.

I have not been doing much with D20 as I am working on the send off of D18. This morning I applied for a Parent Plus loan to close a gap in our college financing. Totally messed it up…if you want to experience a confusing process go to a federal government website. Long story short I applied under my daughters account and locked myself out of mine. Called the financial planning office at Elon and they were wonderful. They were so kind and helpful and did not make me feel stupid…they are fixing what I did with my daughters and in 24 hours when my FASFA account unlocks they are having me call them back and will walk me through the process. I really feel like they are on our side. It is very comforting as I am sending my first to college…by D20 I know I will be a pro at this!

Congratulations on all the good AP results!!! And it sure is nice for teachers to bump up school grade with exam result of 5!
DS’ APUSH teacher was supposed to be extremely experienced for the course and is very passionate about teaching, our school also starts in mid-August which is better for preparing for AP exams, but he got so behind in his teaching that he had to put in five or six evening/Saturday three-hour lessons and still was not able to cover much post World War II. DS was not able to do all the evening/Saturday lessons and was glad that he read a book on post-1945 American history. Even though it seemed not to be an important period for the exam, but still is kind of annoying. Oh well. Just need to wait and see what the results are. Also waiting for AP stat.
Are AP exams curved?

If you live in a state where you have to wait for AP scores you can log in via a proxy server. Google early ap scores if you need help with this. DS20 got 4’s on Physics 1 and 2 and Chem. He really wanted a 5 in Chem but he’s happy to be done with Chem!

You can check now via other sites, but you will only get the score, not details.

@3scoutsmom just saw on another thread that AP physics 1/2 are pretty hard to get 3 and above! Congrats! Did your DS take both 1 and 2 this year?

About self-study and taking the AP exam, DS might be doing something with double major (of which one will be music), and he is going to have IB music for the next two years, he has strong music theory knowledge and does it make sense for him to take AP music theory exam without taking the corresponding class? (Not offered in his school)

Logging in after a long time - great info/discussion as always.
DS20 got his AP scores and we are happy with scores (in line with what he guessed they would be): 5’s in AP Calc AB, Physics-1 and US Gov; a 4 in Physics-2 (right after this test he thought he didn’t do as well as he did in a full practice test but later on started hoping that he would get a 5 in this subject as well - seems like his guess right after the test was correct). Overall we are pleased with scores.

@apraxiamom what details are you looking for? All I see on the CB site is a number.

@makemesmart Physics 1 and 2 are taught as the same class in our high school. As for AP Music Theory, my DD16 took the class and the exam. She’s a musician and had a good bit of theory with her lessons over the years and she said that the AP Music Theory exam was the hardest AP test she took. If your DS decides to take the exam without the class make sure to get a good prep book!

I never understand two things with the scores. One is why do they send them to the schools, at least in theory first especially since they are not in session. Two why don’t they send the scores to everyone at once? I know you can do it by proxy server, like my daughter did but am I missing something?

They claim if they all came out on same day they couldn’t handle all the students logging in.

D20’s AP CS teacher emailed them today and said he got the scores today too. So same day as the kids.

DS got a 5 on CalcBC and 4 on Chem. He was feeling a little bad about the 4 tho cuz he studied so hard for it. I told him that most schools on his list accept a 4. Still waiting for Subject Test scores.

He has AP Music in the next SY. I’m a little concerned given the feedback here and other sites. Getting him the Barron’s book to supplement. May also encourage an online edx or coursera.

Congrats to all of your students. Sounds like a lot of good scores.

So many AP exams during soph year on these boards!
DS “only” took one this year. He is very happy with his 5 in Bio. For some reason he has decided not to take the Bio subject test though.

@carpoolingma Yes, this board has such an impressive bunch of kids!!! S20 “only” took one this year also. He hasn’t shown any interest of wanting to know the score. How does your DS think about AP Bio? Mine is to take it next year, since D17 never took it, we don’t have any idea on what to expect.

Mine only took one this year as a sophomore (APWH) and plans to take 3 as a junior.
