Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 1)

@socaldad2002 it is, but she’s doing 4 honors and 2 APs this year and has all A+ grades, so she should be fine. She’s very organized.

@chb088 quite the schedule!

Our HS only has 6 classes per semester and DSs classes are all full year. It’s so hard for him to fit in all his wants to take when he can only choose 6 classes a year.

@Grad2020n23x2 can your DS take classes after school? My DS did two semesters (one in 9th grade the other in 10th grade) of PE fencing off campus in the evenings and weekends. Starting in 11th grade my kids also take one DE class a semester (either on line or in the evening). This allowed them to get more of the classes they really wanted in and helped knock out some of the college gen ed classes.

@Grad2020n23x2 yeah I guess but she’s got a similar schedule this year and all high As…should be fine. It’s her choice. We don’t push her. Her brother (S18) did much less. :wink:

it’s over! today is the last day of our crazy month with HS sports - he’s had 21 games in the last 6 weeks. ** note to self (and maybe others); we will never let him or our younger kid be a “swing” player again and play in that many games during a season again.

Hoping S20 can start focusing on grades and AP test now. Any hints for studying AP Human Geo?

@bgbg4us Which sport(s)?

@chb088 He is taking 2 art history classes online this summer, approved by the administration already so he doesn’t have to squish them into his schedule next year and loose his foreign language class. He is also taking the mandatory PE credits outside of school hours so he can take all three AP science + comp science in the 4 years. 6 classes a year with general requirements is really a pain…oh well…hes currently studying for the 3 AP exams that are rapidly approaching and then we’ll get the art stuff in motion while hes doing nothing in those three classes till end of June.

S is just preparing one AP test. He said there is no new material introduced in the class any more, but just prepare for the test. If this is the case, what will they do in school for the full month + time after the test? :-/

They will screw around. Wait until they are juniors or seniors and have 4 or 5 AP/IB tests. Massive screwing around.

@VickiSoCal Good he only have 1 class like this:-) He can also use this opportunity to prepare for his standard tests.

Just wondering if anyone’s kid is going to Vanderbilt’s Summer Academy this year.? My d20 is taking the math class.If your child has done it before I would love to hear about their experience and if they liked it. This is my daughter’s first time.

Hi, everyone its been awhile since I posted. I have no clue what classes son is going to take next year. He is meeting with counselor this week. He went on his first College tour this last week. He has his first SAT this Saturday. This is a no stress test. We just want to see where he needs help in and a base line. He is not going to any schools that will make him send in all scores so no worry on that part. His older brother graduates in a month so it seems like it is the “older’s show”. I told him 18 will be gone in just a few months so ALL focus will be on him. I think I scared him a bit with that statement.

@Texas1820 we are facing the same thing at our house I’m not sure how DS20 is going to cope with DS18 being away at college and all my attention will be focused on him!

so - my scattered S20 put together with friends this crazy haunted house last halloween in our garage. the newspaper wrote a small article about it; probably 300 people showed up and there were waiting lines down the street. it was crazy. He had to write about doing a community project for english class; and he wrote about expanding that. And today he found out he won this national grant. Its such a hokey, home-spun creative idea; it came from him and friends. Pretty excited mom here as he’s my most “chill” child! just thought i’d share; not really a facebook person.

@bgbg4us Wow that’s fantastic!! What a great story.

@bgbg4us That is so impressive!!!

@bgbg4us that’s how our local haunted trail got started. 2018 with be the 24th year, and we have over 200 volunteers, proceeds are donated to local charities. Definitely something unique to list on his college applications!

Well the AP testing weeks have arrived for many of our kids…hard to believe it is just about the end of the year (some sooner than others…we have till end of June). Good luck to all who start their AP exams Monday morning! (DS has Chem)

@Grad2020n23x2 My d20 has the WH AP test on May 17 so still has some study time left. :slight_smile:

Mine has none this week. Comp Sci and Euro the week after.

She’s camping and competing this weekend at an annual Girl Scout competition. She will be sailing, kayaking and swimming as well as being team captain. Last night she swam at league finals and her team won championships.

So yeah, she’s really studying for those APs. :slight_smile:
