Parents of the HS Class of 2020 (Part 2)

Thank you for the nudge on this. I just booked hotel rooms for our crew. Boston hotels are never cheap, but boy do they jack those prices up in May when all the schools are holding commencement. Talk about sticker shock.

Yes, thank you for the reminder! This will be ds’s first graduation ceremony as his high school ceremony was canceled due to Covid. He’s my youngest and I’m so excited for to see him walk and step into the next chapter of his life. He was offered a great job at the company he interned with this summer so things are starting to fall into place!

ok, I know this is the deadest thread on CC, but I just figured it was the right place to share it…so excited to schedule D20’s LAST undergraduate tuition payment today. I am ecstatic and honestly can’t believe we managed to get her through school, debt-free. (of course, now I can start stressing about the next four years of tuition for D24 :face_with_peeking_eye: )

Anyway, I hope many of you are enjoying or will soon be enjoying that feeling of the last payment for our HS class of 2020 kiddos.

So funny, I thought about posting here but wasn’t going to until I saw your post. Can’t believe our 2020s are graduating. D20 just received her first law school acceptance today, so school payments will continue for us, at least on her dime this time! Celebrate making that final college payment!

Mine took a year off and then transferred, so he is a junior. It seems to be common for the 2020 grads to have a meandering path, from what I have seen anecdotally. We’re happy he is on track to not be in school more than 9 semesters, so we’re seeing that as a win, after transferring and changing majors, etc!

Mine also transferred and is a junior… it does seem to be more common with this class.

Also so happy to be making that last college tuition payment! My son, like I am sure many of yours, did not have a high school graduation ceremony in 2020, so we are very excited for graduation. It will be at iconic Fenway Park. He is on track to graduate summa cum laude. He has made some great friends and travelled abroad.

What a great venue! My D20 is also in school in Boston. Her ceremony will be at the MGM Fenway music hall

That’s a great venue too. Especially if it rains!

My student is hesitant about me planning a graduation party this early. I think, in the back of their mind, they worry that it is going to be yanked away again.

D20 home from college, doing zoom interviews and working on her senior thesis. I just sent off the last tuition bill (eek! on the amount, yippee on it being the last!).

Next year still very much up in the air - she’s in the waiting mode on application results.

What did she study or what field is she interested in?

We were very happy to celebrate my son’s college graduation since he did not have a high school ceremony. There were some pro-Palestinian protesters during ceremonies, which I did not enjoy but I’m glad the university did not cancel the whole graduation like USC. I’ll miss visiting my son in Boston but not paying tuition or high Boston rents. Congrats college Class of 2024!:tada::balloon:

Congratulations to your son! My D20 graduates next week. I’m bracing for some protest, too. She is staying in Boston (but on her own dime), so Boston will remain a visit destination for us, at least for the next year.

I just stumbled upon this thread and wanted to say a hearty congratulations to the HS class of 2020, whether they are celebrating a college graduation this year or in the near future.

Reading back through this thread makes me remember how much our kids went through, with having their HS Senior celebrations and their first college year so disrupted. It seems like a distant memory to me now, but our kids deserve special recognition.

My DS is completing his fourth year at a music conservatory which has been an amazing experience. He had his first year remote and at home which was challenging, especially as a music performance student. Even in his second year when he was finally able to move on campus, there were so many planned and then canceled recitals and concerts. But it has made him appreciate real, live and collaborative music and performing in front of audiences. And I am so very proud of him for the patience, professionalism and grace he showed throughout.

He has been offered a fifth year at his conservatory (his program is tuition free for all accepted students) which he has accepted. So he will stay on this next year as he prepares his auditions and transitions to the professional music world.

Again, bravo to the class of 2020! Take an extra bow!:clap::clap:

My student is at USC. The whole graduation was not cancelled. USC has a main ceremony at 8:30 am. Additionally, each department has their own ceremony which is where the students’ names are read and they walk the stage. Many students/families don’t attend the main ceremony. Most (not all) departmental ceremonies start immediately after the main ceremony so students and families need to leave early to go to the departmental ceremony. Each department also has an elaborate reception that day.

The main ceremony in the morning was cancelled. The departmental ceremonies and receptions were never cancelled.

Students expressed disappointment in not having a ceremony that they could attend with friends in other departments. USC added a celebration for all graduates in the Coliseum with drone shows, fireworks, etc.

That’s good. I hate to see any college graduation cancelled, especially for kids who did not have a high school graduation.

D20 graduated this weekend. It was nice to have a traditional graduation ceremony! She is headed to law school in the Fall. Good luck to everyone who is graduating this year and to everyone who took a gap year and will graduate in the future!
