Parents of the HS Class of 2022

I think she got wiser and more practical after starting college. Studying abroad was one of her dreams growing up, but she even gave that up saying that she’d rather travel later with that time and money. It’s not like she really had planned it from the beginning to graduate early, oveloading with classes, taking summer classes, she did none of that.
Also, she’e been working part time at nonprofit company(paid), and working for clubs at school as work study. I am thankful, with all that she can still graduate early even with a minor.
She could’ve done thesis in spring of 2026, but, she has to be enrolled in school, which she doesn’t want to do. She will go back to school for graduation ceremony in May 2026, otherwise, she probably would’ve stayed longer to graduate together with her friends.
Recruiter told her that if she receives job offer after internship, she can may start in Jan, March or something. I think there is no downside of graduating early if that’s what anyone wants to do.

As son doesn’t even have a summer 2025 internship offer yet, there’s no full-time “return offer”.

I was wondering more about if it gives the applicant a leg up when it comes to pursuing full-time employment, saying that you’re available starting Jan 2026, before all the other May 2026 applicants…

Many companies do coordinated new employee onboarding. I don’t think it helps to say you want to start earlier than the cohort.

Some companies have 2 starting dates, one for fall graduates and one for spring graduates. Smaller companies that don’t hire many entry level employees may simply hire him when he is available. S20 is getting his MS in December and will start in January.

If your son doesn’t mind not having anything to do in spring, then graduating earlier will allow him to apply for both fall and spring graduate positions.

D22 got a frantic message yesterday from her new (they change pretty frequently) academic advisor that she forgot to sign up for and complete graduation paperwork. Well, she is not planning to graduate next spring. But since she has enough credits to do so, it triggered a message to the advisor.
She might graduate in Dec. 25 though. It will depend on finances. Due to a bonus payment last year our FA will probably be reduced and that might make it necessary for her to graduate in December. Otherwise I’m not the biggest fan of early graduation, working life is long enough.

Haven’t visited in a while. Good to see that our kids are doing well.

S22 is enjoying his college experience. He worked for a defense company last summer. Securing internships this fall has been difficult, as noted by many. Fortunately, after many applications and a few interviews, he has an offer for a summer internship at an ecommerce warehouse. It is more managerial than technical, but getting that managerial experience this early may not be a bad idea.

D22 will be here in a few days - two finals remaining. Her bro (S16) will arrive one day after her and we have some great plans in store for Christmas and New Years.

All’s well with her classes, and lab work. She’s decided to take the Dental School Admissions Test in January so she will have some studying to do after New Years celebrations.

Merry Christmas - happy New Year - and success in classes - to all…

D22 is coming home on Wednesday. She is headed to Copenhagen in the Spring semester, and was recently selected to be a fellow for her school’s immersive Washington Dc program so she will return from Denmark and then move to DC for the summer and Fall (combination of internships and classes). She has interned in DC the past two summers in different capacities (once for a Congresswoman and last year in a very high profile role associated with the presidential campaign) and is hoping to land a spot in a legislative office/think tank/advocacy org. Navigating internship applications and interviews from Europe will be challenge but she is excited about her term abroad.

Thank you! Sounds like it will be a wonderful holiday. Wishing your D22 all the best in her studies and prep for the admissions test in January!

Wow!! That is a whole lot of exciting things coming up for your D22 this next year! She must have been working super hard with all the political activities on top of school this year plus being selected a fellow for that DC program. Bravo to her. I’m sure she will have an amazing time in Denmark!

My son started in CS and switched to Applied Physiology and Health Management with a minor in Data Science. He is lined up for an unpaid physical therapy tech job and hopefully gets some sort of summer internship. Wants PT school but grades are about a 3.1 overall. A one year masters in something might help but we’ll see. He loves the school and has had great experiences.

His sister graduated with a 3.6+ GPA and focused on PA school apps for this spring.

Any recent discussions for co-op?
Any of your students doing a co-op?
Any co-op in quant/finance world?

Jr planning out his classes for the last 3 semesters.
It turns out that he only needs 2 semesters, so he can either graduate 1 semester early, or do a co-op.

I don’t even know the timing for co-op applications.
Is it too late to apply for Fall 2025 coop (available between May 2025-February 2026)?

Appreciate all tips/suggestions.

College is on January-term/break,
so he hasn’t been to the career center/hasn’t spoken to any professors about this new idea yet.

thank you.

This Fellows program in Smith B school at Univ of Maryland mentions coop or study abroad are encouraged if admitted to Fellows.

Apps close in mid February.

Perhaps your son’s B school has something similar?

Trying to decide whether to visit S22 this semester. I’m dealing with an orthopedic injury so visiting NYC might not be easy. But seemingly all of a sudden there aren’t many semesters left!

He will probably come home for the summer unless he gets a last minute opportunity there. Would be nice to have him at home. Maybe the last summer with all of us under the same roof?

S22 found out this morning that he got an internship he’d really wanted!

As people above have noted, it’s been rough finding a good opportunity.

He applied to MANY companies and internships – was given only a few interviews and those led to zero offers. Then he applied for this very structured internship that looks perfect for what he wants – several rounds later, he found out he got it.

They typically offer around half of the interns full-time employment. :crossed_fingers: that he likes the program and gets a full-time offer!

We just got back from visiting D22 in Copenhagen, where she is studying for the semester. It was wonderful to see her in a new environ, navigating new friendships and exploring her academic areas of interest from new perspectives. She has been interviewing for internships in Dc for the summer while abroad and is feeling anxious about everything falling into place before her fellowship begins in June. Luckily, she has delicious Danish pastry and cozy coffee shops to distract her in the meantime. She is also playing rugby with a local team there and that helps manage some of the nervous energy. Next wee she will be traveling to Italy to meet up with S24 and his beloved, who are on their Spring Break adventure across Europe.

My D22 is studying in Italy and visiting Copenhagen this week on spring break. It seems many of her friends from both high school and college are abroad this semester and she has a BFF in Copenhagen. Looking forward to visiting her in Sorrento next month. In her field internships are set up well in advance so her 25 summer internship was set up in 2023 and they recently checked on her GPA.

I’m happy to report that my S22 landed a 10 week, paid internship for the summer! He’ll be doing data analytics for a major corporation. They hire about 40 interns company wide for a variety of positions every summer - so it’s a well structured cohort of interns with many networking opportunities. He is SO excited, and it’s such a huge relief after 6 months of applications. He applied to approx 150 companies- I reached out to my network, and he utilized the network and posted opportunities through his university, as well applying cold to online postings. None of the connections turned into anything for him at all. Everything came from the online apps he submitted.

Since November he got interviews with 8 different companies, went to 2 final round interviews and received one offer. Sounds crazy after applying to 150 places, but apparently those metrics are pretty good in this market. All his interviews came from places he applied to online, and had no other connection. Applied up and down the east coast, as we were willing to pay for housing if needed. His offer came from a corporate office that’s within commuting distance from our home.

I think 4 of his first round interviews he did utilized the computer AI technique . He had a hard time with those - speaking just to a screen and having no human interaction or conversation. I guess that’s the future of job searching, as is the reality that every posting gets hundreds of applicants.

I’m thankful that he went to Spain last summer and did a data analytics internship there - even though it was unpaid and it cost us thousands of dollars in housing, food, travel and internship credits for his degree. Every company was interested in his past experience, and appreciated his fluency in Spanish. Right now we’re all breathing a sigh of relief after a very long six months filled with lots of stress and anxiety!

There are a lot of Fall co-op openings. I know Jane Street posted a Fall co-op at their NYC office. And I know Tesla posted a ton assuming he is not interested in just quant roles.

Congrats to your S22! My D22 is still looking. The summer research job she thought she had secured has disappeared thanks to the federal funding shenanigans. So now she is scrambling. She is abroad in Switzerland right now, so is searching from there. I recommended she stay in Europe over the summer and look for an internship there. But even though she is having the best time there, she wants to be back in New Orleans for the summer. It might end up being a combination of an unpaid internship with some job for income. I’m glad she is flexible
