Parents of the HS Class of 2022

It’s sounds like you have good leads going, but I’ll drop this in as an option. Very close to the downtown Berkeley BART station.
Additionally, tons of students would have apt sublets available in the summer.

Relaxing summer here. S22 working part time at a theater company. Got his wisdom teeth out. Mellow.

S22 ended up working for the summer with the same small, regional A.I. start up that employed him last summer and part time over junior year. They really like him, and have offered him a job upon graduation with a good salary package. He still would rather work for a large company, but is appreciative of the “bird in hand.” His mom and I are thrilled he may end up back home. It’s been great having him around this summer. Only one month then he is back in L.A. Senior year! It went so fast.

@vistajay
Congrats to your son on Full-time offer. What time frame did they give him to respond/accept by?

My son is loving his San Francisco summer internship. He is working hard to hopefully get a full-time offer from this company.

Hi all. Nice to see some updates on this thread. My D22 is halfway through her summer research internship. Tbh, it’s been a bit underwhelming for her, as her supervisor hasn’t given her much to do. On the other hand, she was totally spent after completing her “finals” in June and has used the past month to recuperate and discover northern CA with new friends.

I am very much looking forward to seeing her in a month, when I visit her in CA. In the meantime, I am trying to survive the summer heat in Japan! Stay well, everyone.

Perhaps this belongs in another thread…

But has any parent(s) considered moving to where your child(ren) end up after college at their new job’s location?

Boy, I truly enjoyed our vacation to San Francisco/Berkeley when we helped son move in for his internship.

My husband is itching to retire. I have at least 10-15 more years (for medical insurance coverage, etc). For the past 4 years, we’ve been brainstorming of where we want to retire. We have family in NYC, VA, southern CA.
Hub is from Dominican Republic; he’d go there in a heartbeat, but that would mean we’d get a divorce, because I cannot tolerate the tropical dew point.

SO when we visited SF and Berkeley and in JUNE, it was truly magical. The weather was beyond perfect:

  • low dew point
  • mostly sunny
  • no hotter than 73 degrees
  • and often a breeze,
    and public transportation!

Added: I forgot the most amazing part: there are NO MOSQUITOES!!!
Mosquitoes love me, and I am allergic to their bites. Currently, I’m battling with 6 mosquito bites.

UC Berkeley CAL is so beautiful! I love the college town, where everything around it is set up to support CAL.

There’s everything there:

  • suburb CAL, with a huge Tilden Park in the backyard
  • city San Francisco, with a huge Chinatown
  • many beaches, coastline
all accessible with public transportation (or WAYMO).

I didn’t know such a heavenly place existed in the US.
Yes, I completely understand that we’d live in an $1 million shed since it’s extremely expensive there.

I don’t think the frat house would rent to me (since I’m not a brother). Hmmmm… maybe I can become a sorority house manager…

Do adults get roommates?
Who wants to rent a 2-bedroom with me/hub?

With two kids in the L.A. area, my spouse has mentioned that we should get a retirement home out there. After I remind her that selling our 5 bedroom, 4 bath home in Louisiana would get us a 2 bedroom, one bath condo in L.A., she usually moves on to other topics.

SF is indeed magical. You could potentially rent pretty economically if you pick the right spots. like Berkeley will be significantly cheaper than SF but could also be expensive if you want to rent in one of the micro suburbs around it like Piedmont and Moraga.

But if all you want is a good 2bd apt you will find plenty of those in SF.

But ugh to being in the city, especially after what’s been the coldest start to summer in 60 years. SF even had measurable rainfall from the dense fog on Monday (first time in July for several years). Incidentally I always laugh at cold weather being described as “mild” here (in the UK that usually means warm).

The suburbs are better than the city, but if you want a university nearby then we think being close to Stanford is nicer than being close to Berkeley.

Berkeley is magical! We lived in the Oakland hills for a few years before heading to Marin, and there are some terrific neighborhoods on the Berkeley/Oakland border: Elmwood, Rockridge, Claremont. Alternatively, North Berkeley, Albany, Kensington are also lovely.

You can also duck through the Caldecott tunnel if you need temps that are 10-15 degrees warmer. We used to go to Lafayette, Orinda, Moraga when we needed a bit of summer heat (like temps in the 80s instead of 60s-70s.

I love the fog and the cool weather but that may be just me

i now live not far away from Stanford but cannot wait to become an empty nester in 4 years when i can finally move back to our SF condo right at the top of the presidio hill surrounded by fog and gloom.

Me too! I am loving this summer. But then I am a person who finds southern California too hot :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I agree 100% with all of the things you mentioned. Since S22 is at UC Berkeley, I’ve been going to visit two or three times a year and I love it there so much. I would happily move there long term but S22 is hoping to end up in NYC after graduation and there is no way we could afford to live in that city. So I just hope to visit often!

I’m so old.
or so my son says.

What’s your opinion on this?
Zoom interviews (several rounds) with start-up company (not tiny):

  • suit or
  • no suit?

Also final presentation of his internship in person to the AI team:

  • suit or
  • no suit?

thanks for playing along.

no suit in either case

Is this a West Coast or East Coast startup?

No suit is probably fine either way, but if it’s East Coast, a blazer over a dress shirt would be a good choice.

As someone who has worked at four different Bay Area startups, no suit for either one. Maybe a button-down shirt with nice jeans or pants, but I’d suggest he check in with his internship mentor and go with whatever they say.

How has everyone’s summer been? S22 spent the summer at Berkeley taking random courses outside his major that interested him because he was sad that senior year was upon him and that this was his last opportunity to indulge in his “intellectual curiosity.” (Graduate school for the foreseeable future is impractical and not something he wants to pursue. So he really felt this was the “end” of his academic pursuits in a university setting.) He had summer internships for the past three summers and didn’t want to do another one this year. Over the summer he had a few classes he really loved and enjoyed, but he only has a one week break before the regular year begins and is sort of burnt out from studying. He just finished his last summer final on Friday! I sure hope he recovers next week and is able to start the new year with some enthusiasm. I really can’t believe the last year of college has come. Wishing everyone and their S22 and D22’s a fabulous senior year!

Four years is going by fast! D22 spent the summer interning and babysitting. She received a return offer from the company she interned with, so that takes the pressure off senior year. She had a wonderful study abroad experience in the spring and has packed a lot into her college years.

D22 started senior year classes yesterday. She was set on graduating in December for a long time but changed her mind due to the job market. She will tag on a certificate and more foreign language classes for fun. She has also packed in so much into those 3 years so far, 2 study abroads, 3 internships and two on-campus jobs. Her internships were all with non-profits that don’t really have the money to hire her. With degrees in Public Health and International Relations and a fairly woke resume I am not very hopeful for her job prospects at the moment. Times are tough for this field. Time will tell but this mom is worried.

Wishing all the 22s a great senior year!
