Parents of the HS Class of 2024 (Part 1)

It’s personal preference. I’ve probably been there at least 30 times visiting Wells Fargo and Edward Jones home offices. Maybe it’s because I kept going to the same places!

I actually quite liked The Glory. I keep meaning to check out SKY Castle, which sounds fun (and appropriate).

I’m a big STL fan too! D22 is there and LOVES all that the city offers- great restaurants, fun neighborhoods, Forest Park, lots of events (many free).

I really like Nashville too!

I’ll get to visit both as D24 is headed there.

Yeah, my exposure has been much more limited, but I liked it each of those few times. I liked the history and the quirkiness, and I don’t mind it being rough around the edges. If S24 ends up at WUSTL, I’d be looking forward to visits, but I am not thinking we could get away with 30 . . . .

My D24s counselor has recommended Wash U as ED2 after the deferral. Daughter was in St Louis for a diversity conference a couple of weeks ago so it is not out of the question but not likely as she wants to play it out and see what happens with the ivies RD. Too bad bc I think WASH U would suit her well. We did find out today that she got her first acceptance at PSU so that is positive.

D24 is in a similar boat. She has applications in at mostly what we hope are safety and target levels, but I feel like getting some rejections as well is helpful in terms of making sure she stretched as far as she could.

She knows that even if she gets in, the finances will probably not work out, but to me it is worth $75 (just to know) if she is willing to put forth the effort for one RD application. She is also working on the application for honors at a college where she is already accepted, so she couldn’t take a complete break from thinking about college during winter break anyway.

WUSTL was definitely a big hit with my S24, and I do think the appeal is very similar in some notable ways. If he was going to ED II anywhere, I think it would still have been there, but I personally still like better the plan of seeing where he is actually admitted. I just think there is too much chance of serious list reordering when it becomes really real.

I don’t know, this ED II issue is super stressful. I know for some people it is an easy choice, which is great, but it seems rather common for kids to just not be at all sure what to do.

That sounds like a wild roller coaster! I am so glad it worked out in the end.

I have to put St Louis in my top whatever simply because of City Museum. The number of bruises and memories I have gotten from crawling/climbing/sliding through that mad genius place with my D

St Louis and Louisville are my two favorite take the kids for the weekend cities.

Of course these aren’t kids anymore.

I was thinking city museum too! All three of my kids love that place, it was where we discovered the most amazing adult spinning seat which we have in our basement and countless teens have enjoyed.

My personal favorite city in the US is San Diego. Absolutely love that place. Seattle, Austin, NYC, Charlotte (most of North Carolina).

Would probably retire in La Jolla under perfect circumstances.

I get together with three other mom’s from DS’s Primary school. The boys are all close friends. One friend got into Chicago. Another got deferred at Penn. His mom went to Penn and is wound tight. She’s so stressed and angry that he didn’t get in. I feel for her and her son. The third friend is just doing RD. I think DS is having buyer’s remorse. It’s just a roller coaster of emotions around here. It will be nice when they are all in school and settled.

Yes, this is my D24 too. Just so very happy with her school and now having fun connecting with new classmates through social media, geeking out over the course catalog, and contemplating housing options. One of her classmates was rejected by D24s school and several of her friends were deferred by their first choices so, currently, so is very very happy

And S24 is so happy with his EA acceptances he has decided not to apply to the reaches on his list, all of which would cost twice as much as any of his current options, so yay for my budget!

FWIW, I’m with CFP on this. I think it’s mostly the weather - the South generally has mild winters and the North has pleasant summers, but St. Louis never seems to have pleasant anything, regardless of the season. But I’ve never been to City Museum, so maybe I’m missing the boat. :slightly_smiling_face:

You did miss but saved some bruises.
I think the review said b4 we went, your kids will get hurt …and have the best time ever.

Yes and yes.

You are all making my day because I am fairly certain Kpop clubs will be one of the first activities my C24 looks into at college. And here I thought not everyone would list a k-pop song for one of those college application short answer question about what song tells the story of your life …

Ive been meaning to ask.

Is there a reason your username is Mrpibb and not DrPepper?

Such as winning untold millions…

It’s been nice to follow along this thread. Congratulations to all those with acceptances! The best of luck to the rest for future decisions.

An update here – EA Deferral from UChicago.

Advice needed –

  1. How should the deferral be interpreted? I don’t see data regarding the deferral rate.
  2. Should the list of RD schools be adjusted to remove schools with similar acceptance rates? Please note that UChicago is the reachiest of the schools on the EA list.

For the rest of the schools to which DC24 applied, we won’t hear anything back until mid-January or later, so it will be too late to adjust the list based on those results. Thank you in advance for your help.
